Five step plan for a winning campaign

"Since you are seeking the most important position and since you have so many potential enemies you can't afford to make any mistakes. You must conduct a flawless campaign with the greatest thoughtfulness, industry and care. You must:"

[B]1. "Promi1se everything to everyone. Tell them what they want to hear. In promising anything tell them that unless of some clear obligation preventing it, but only live up to those obligation that benefit you."

2. "Call in all favors. If you have helped friends or associates tell them its payback time. Make it clear to each one who is obligated to you exactly what you expect of them. If someone is not in your debt remind them that you can reward them later, but only if he backs you now."

3. "Know your opponents weaknesses and exploit them. A winning candidate calmly assesses his opponent and then focuses relentlessly on his weaknesses all the while trying to distract voters from his strengths."

4. "Flatter voters shamlessly. A candidate must make voters believe that he thinks their important. Shake their hands and look them in the eye, listen to their problems."

5 . "Give people hope. Even the most cynical voter want to believe in someone. The most important part of your campaign is to bring hope to people and a feeling of goodwill toward you Voters who believe that you can make their world better will be your most devoted followers....."

What expert offered this solid advice?

Quintus younger brother of Marcus Tullius Cicero who was running for roman consul 64B.B.C. Marcus won with more votes than any other candidate, went on to save the republic from a conspiracy and was eventually given the title of "father of his country". Unfortunately he ran afoul of Mark Anthony and was murdered in 43 B.C.

Keep these five steps in mind everytime you hear a politician speak and especially remember promise them anything but only do what benefits you.

It really gets old. Unable to discuss issues, the ridicule just goes on. To me, it simply shows a serious lack of ability to talk about issues, a lack of knowledge on issues, or just bad genes. NOBODY is natively as cruel and ill informed and able to simply talk in hurtful and really vicious about human beings who have accomplished more than the poster can even imagine. My first thought is jealousy, and then I realize that these folks don't even know enough to know what they might be jealous of. Thus, it is just total mean spirited and inormation starved folks.

Bucco/Richielion: The truth is that many folks are catching on to this sort of nonsense perhaps because they finally recognized how much is at stake. Peggy Noonan wrote an article concerning this nastiness and made mention that liberal men apparently believing they were on the right side could mercilessly denigrate women. She gave a number of examples but I am not as fearless as she in citing them. Kathyrn Lopez in today's Sunday 3/18 Daily Sun did likewise. IMHO, thank God we have more Americans who will always take the high road and can appreciate the importance of fair play. The Bill Maher's of the world eventually disappear . Consider what type of person would make sport of Sarah Palin's child by referring to the child as a retard. It reeks of hate and Bill Maher, Jo Behar and Rosie O'Donnell are at the top of that list when it comes to Palin haters.

By the way the liberals may have made a freudian slip when filming Game Changer. As you recall at the end of the movie the crowd ignored McCain and chanted Sarah Sarah........Interesting that the liberals/enemies flooded her with lawsuits and bad press following the campaign. Do you suppose they feared she was just getting started and so they were so concerned that the overkill in ridicule, et al which continues today? I do. The liberals fear her and so they will never cease their endless and vile attacks. That is my opinion but other will have to decide.

Ah, the well-meaning but sadly mistaken Republicans who are blinded by their Sarah Palin adoration. The woman was totally unprepared and too ignorant to be on the national political scene. She did not know world history, did not know the Queen of England was not the political head, could not answer what newspapers she read on a daily basis, and thought she knew foreign policy because Russia was in close land proximity to Alaska. She lied about the Bridge to Nowhere. Her debates were centered on changing the subject when she was clueless on an issue. Sarah is a great actress and great speaker but what she will be remembered for - and what will ever prevent her for holding office again - SHE QUIT HER ELECTED POSITION AS GOVERNOR.

Do you realize that liberals feel EXACTLY the same way about the negative insulting conservatives. So while you imagine falsely that you are right, they feel the same way and most of the time someone is wrong. I personally find negativity on both sides, but more so on the conservative side of the house. I watch msnbc and see negative comments about conservatives, but no where on earth will you find more nasty negativity than on FOX. Just try to open your closed little minds and recognize you are also wrong. I have watched the SIX PAC belittle liberals on this site for years, but one word from them about Sarah and its all so terrible. Seriously!!!!!! grow up and open your minds.

I consider myself to be an equal opportunity "insulter". I will call out anyone like you who will NOT...REFUSE to discuss any issue whatsoever, and simply spend your time on here demeaning and insulting other human beings. That deserves to be insulted.

Interesting that this thread about how politicians have not changed over the years and has spun into a HATE thread on S. Palin, who is NOT a candidate for anything, holds NO office, yet YOU said about her...."She is cute, but stupid" I am very sure that she is jealous of you and wishes she had your brains and your success.

You can say whatever pleases yourself but the fact is that you and others just HATE.....never DISCUSS. As I said, I assume that is your lack of knowledge or perhaps you are just plain mean spirited..it certainly is not indicative of a mature person or one who wants to discuss and learn.

And I welcome you to cut and paste any post I made that RIDICULED a politician that I opposed on here....you will not find it and your accusation which was extremely general was way way out of line. If you aske me to find posts by you that ridicule...THAT would be easy.

Guest 03-18-2012 09:29 AM

Bucco,

I put down some facts about Sarah Palin that are true. I know she is not running for office now but lots of conservatives look to her as the icon of the Republican party. Which of the facts that I mentioned do you take as untrue?

"The woman was totally unprepared and too ignorant to be on the national political scene. She did not know world history, did not know the Queen of England was not the political head, could not answer what newspapers she read on a daily basis, and thought she knew foreign policy because Russia was in close land proximity to Alaska. This is a time I am asking you to discuss your viewpoints.

Please cite where folks have said, without looking for political gain, that Palin is "DISGUSTING" !

And you know what...I am not a supporter of hers and never have been, but what are the resumes of those who mock her and say she "has no business acting like a knowledgeable adult when it comes to important political decisions." Have they served as a Governor.....been in the public eye on a national scale ? Sometimes people are just plain jealous

Pretty much your entire post was misinformation and propaganda propagated by the liberal media machine, except that she actually did resign as governor. Even that is out of context as far as the laws in Alaska and the muck raking liberal activists who took advantage of these liberal "ethics" laws where anybody can file anything for any reason. You only cite the part of the story which fits your biased narrative, and to me that's as bad as a lie.

Bucco: How would you characterize a political candidate who held the following views?

- Didn't know why North and South Korea were separate countries.
- Thought that the head of the U.K. government was the Queen and not the prime Minister.
- Could not name a single newspaper or magazine she'd read after railing about their criticism of her.
- Didn't know the basics behind Paul Revere's ride - and when informed that he only spoke to the British at gunpoint after being captured, doubled-down insisting that her version was the truth.
- Didn't know that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were private corporations.
- Said her state (Alaska) produced 20% of US energy when, in fact, it produces 3.5%
- Quoted Westbrook Pegler in her speech at the GOP convention. Pegler was an avowed racist and anti-Semite who wrote of his hopes of RFK being assasinated. Kind of like her own Bill Ayers.
- Thought that Iraq planned and executed 9/11.

I try very hard not to descend into nastiness when discussing Palin, but I certainly understand the frustrations of others. And, to be honest, I don't think it would have been so much of an issue if it weren't for all the questions surrounding McCain's health.

Remember, McCain's medical records were treated the way Obama's college records are. A few journalists were allowed to see the 3-inch-thick folders for something like 15 minutes. They weren't allowed to have any recording devices and had to give all the materials back at the end of the session. Right, wrong or indifferent, it certainly gave the impression that they were trying to cover something up.

I could post links that refute much of what you wrote above, especially your misrepresentation (again) on Paul Revere's ride in which she is right and you are stubbornly wrong, but in the interest of just bashing people lamely for reasons unknown, I'm just going to links Obama gaffes which, like your post intends, should now render him incapable of serious consideration as anything higher than a Jew....uh, uh, uh......a janitor.

Come on folks. It is well known why she was chosen to run and ultimately why she failed. She is the one that still acts as if she would have been good in government. Lets be honest. She is not competent enough to be on a political leaders staff, much less a political leader. You make yourself look less than awake to defend her abilities. Defend her as a nice lady who may very well care about this country, but don't try to act as if she could help run it. GGGGEEEEEZZZZZZZ She is the one that causes the insults to continue to rain down just by shoving her face in front of the camera. That's why whenever she spoke in public she drew 10 times more people than were expected, and it scared the bejesus out of the liberal political machine to which you are totally devoted and the contract was put out that she had to be destroyed.

So you liberals got all your media soldiers together to ambush her with questions who's answers could be manipulated and spun negatively, and the rat troops of hundreds of investigators were sent to Alaska in a desperate attempt the destroy this woman, her family and anybody who spoke up for her.

Having said that there are inumerable politicians that have been categorized in the same manner as Palin and Biden. Its never been in my nature to ridicule anyone

It is sad and counter-productive to launch personal attacks. Isn't it more constructive to discuss the merits or disadvantages of policy? Apparently not so for many, The intent of the original post was to stimulate dialogue on how we could counter the bravado and demand detail and factual information from our leaders. Many members are right when pulling the plug on this forum. I don't want to waste my time with people so shorted sighted that they can't see beyond the next adjective when attacking a person Well back to the drawing board perhaps there is another approach in getting around personal attacks. So you liberals got all your media soldiers together to ambush her with questions who's answers could be manipulated and spun negatively, and the rat troops of hundreds of investigators were sent to Alaska in a desperate attempt the destroy this woman, her family and anybody who spoke up for her.

You want to tell the history of this story? I know the history of this story, and the liberal media machine, the Democrat Party and it's sycophants come off looking almighty sleazy.

Yeah, tough questions like "What newspapers do you read on a regular basis?"

Wow, your adoration of Sarah is amazing. Well, no matter what I say, you will come back with it is the sleazy liberal machine that would do anything to destroy her. You know my viewpoints - as pointed out in front of millions of viewers - but I am not going to say anymore on the subject in order to not to offend a good drinking buddy. You know that I do not want to carry things to a personal level.

All of this was documented. It is not made up. Millions of people saw her freeze up with Katie Couric and heard the infamous newspaper remark and the Russia being close to Alaska remark. She had been FOR the Bridge to Nowhere and then AGAINST it while saying she had never been for it.

I did not even bring up her wrongdoing with "Troopergate" because the trooper seemed to be a real moron and deserved firing.

Idolize her all you want, drink your Kool-Aid, make her the icon of your Party, but the woman was totally out of her element when in politics at the national level.

OBAMA while in HAWAII referred to it as ASIA during a press conference Nov, 2011

OBAMA once said the USA built the International Railroad in Sept, 2011

OBAMA in trying to make a case for government run healthcare said.."UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? It's the Post Office that's always having problems."

And of course OBAMA forgot how many states we have.

These were all errors.....only included them to point out the total shallowness of your attack.

You use words like ICON, IDOLIZE and not sure where you get all this...it seems it has to be some kind of mental image that you got somewhere.

Personally, I was not happy with her selection as VP candidate...glad she is staying out of the current race...but having said that, she has as much right to be involved in her party as anyone. What you see on this forum and this is a FACT....people are just sick and tired of the tired old crap being flung at this woman when you totally ignore so much things of a SERIOUS nature.

I have been silent on this issue for a long time but am tired of you guys with the personal issues that require you to have somebody to HATE and abuse just looking for anything that has her name. Her family, kids...all of them have been dragged through the mud and frankly she brings to the table a lot of virtues that many elected officials could use.

While I have no reason to support her, I am a bit sick of tired of the hate stuff on this person.

Professor Philip Freeman "How To Win An Election: An Ancient Guide To Modern Politicians.

Keep these five steps in mind everytime you hear a politician speak and especially remember promise them anything but only do what benefits you.

Thanks for this post, rubicon. I have read a lot of Roman history and there seem to be many parallels between US history and that of the late Roman Republic.
