Golf cart crash pix!

as i was heading to the sqaure tonite, 3 college age kids passed me in a cart going way to fast weaving all over the path, when we get to Sweetbay parking they are all over weaving backand forth, and all of a sudden on a hard weave there cart rolls over! As the cop was taking my statement he commented this crash could prevent a automobile accident some time,, these 3 are skinned up pretty good, but they are scared!
this was grandpa's cart,

Grandpa is not going to be happy. Glad no one was hurt. These kids look old enough to be licensed drivers and should know better.

A good reminder for our fellow Villagers to counsel their guest drivers on the dangers of speeds and curves if they intend to go out in the cart on their own.

Thanks for the pic, Shooter.

Schaumburger 06-27-2012 09:29 PM

I bet their grandfather is not too happy with them.:ohdear:

Kids think that reckless driving is hilarious. I wish the Daily Sun would publish this picture on the front page.

Villageshooter 06-27-2012 11:58 PM

CarGuys 06-28-2012 12:11 AM

Glad they did not run into you or anyone else! Been retired two days from 34 years of teaching 11-12 grade kids. This just got the heart rate up again!

graciegirl 06-28-2012 04:57 AM

Great picture Villageshooter.

rubicon 06-28-2012 05:43 AM

I wonder, if there is a nexus between the respect these kids have for their grandfather and the manner in which they misused his property?

jojo 06-28-2012 05:54 AM

We saw this too at Sweetbay and assumed there was a collision with a car or another cart but didn't see it. We saw the young men standing around when the police arrived. They are lucky they weren't hurt worse.

Villageshooter 06-28-2012 06:31 AM

good cops

the cops were great they were super understanding,,, they both were under 30,, could tell they were just like all of us,,, WE ALL HAVE DONE STUPID THINGS!,,

i asked the cop if they had been drinking,,, he indicated alchol was not a factor in this crash ,,,, just mistake in judgement!
this was a collision of stupid, testosterone and reality!

graciegirl 06-28-2012 07:08 AM

Thank goodness none of them were hurt...

Yet.

Sometimes a close call like this in a young persons' life is a "wake up call" ,...let's hope so.

buggyone 06-28-2012 08:19 AM

Village Shooter,

Good timing on your part to see it and lucky to have your camera handy to document the young and stupid. I would have liked to seen pictures of the "golf cart overturned by an alligator" posting you made recently. That would have been a hoot.

Good to have met you at Cody's the other day. I also like your idea of the pigeon club.

Glad these kids could jump out of the cart before it flipped over. I still see golf carts with much older drivers zipping by me when I am putt-putting along at around 17 mph in our golf cart.

Floridagal 06-28-2012 10:22 AM

I'm wondering, if this is a lesson to them or anyone else. For some reason, I feel this wouldn't be the first or last time we will see kids/adults thinking a golf cart is a toy.

Villageshooter 06-28-2012 10:22 AM

were in it on its side

they were not able to jump out before it rolled,, they climbed out like rats coming out of a hole,,, then turned it back on its wheels,, you can see stuff all over the asphalt that was in the cart,,,, nobody hurt,, grandpa gets a new cart via his insurance,,, and 3 young folks learn a lesson... God has a plan and it isnt on a GPS!,,

bkcunningham1 06-28-2012 10:25 AM

I don't think your homeowners covers your cart. I think you have to purchase a separate policy, like the one for your vehicle.

And since grandpa was not driving was it covered anyway?

bestmickey 06-28-2012 11:22 AM

If I was Grandpa, I would NOT report this to my insurance carrier since his rates would significantly increase thereafter. If I were Grandpa, I'd make these three stupid jerks pay me in cash to purchase a new cart. The driver should pay the majority cost of a new cart. Make the stupid jerks get jobs at a grocery store, or wherever they can, to make the money. That's the way to teach a jerk a lesson he won't forget. Of course, the jerks would never ever use anything of mine again. And, they probably also wouldn't be invited back for a year or two.

lovesports 06-28-2012 11:39 AM

I was a jerk once. Used to drag race with my Dad's new big Pontiac engine against all my friends with their 50 dollars cars. I was King.
Course I grew up. Can't believe the things I did as youth.

Now I go under 20 in my golf cart and are very careful.

Like others, I'm glad no one was hurt.

Bill-n-Brillo 06-28-2012 02:40 PM

Thanks for the pic!! I'll bet Grandpa was all over them like flies at a picnic when they came back to have to face him!

Bill :)

logdog 06-28-2012 04:51 PM

We also saw this cart post crash last night. Earlier that day while driving the car on O'Dell, I clocked a cart going sustained 30 mph. This was not a street legal and it was not down hill. Carts aren't designed to go that fast, don't have the safety features required for those speeds and can roll over. You can get hurt, pay heavy fines, court appearance and be denied insurance coverage if carts are modified to go over 20 mph. Be careful out there...

gomoho 06-28-2012 08:03 PM

I wonder why everyone is assuming this is "grandpa's cart". I live here and that probably could just as easily been my 28 year old son. Kids looked more like college age than high school. Remember us boomers had kids later in life so it may have been dad's cart - not grandpa's. Just saying!!!!

VillageShooter took the picture and said it was grampa's cart. I assumed he heard the boys talking to the police. Or maybe they were his grandkids!

Happinow 06-28-2012 09:43 PM

14 to drove a golf cart

As I was reading the language on the paper that my guest passes came on i noticed that in order to drive a golf cart you must be 14! Really?? At 14, we all know that these kids think it is a toy. Why is it not that you should have a valid drivers license? Who ever made that rule, should revisit it and perhaps change it to having a license. Actually, my vote would be 18. I know that there are many adults that drive too fast, but 14 seems way too young for that kind of responsibility.

CarGuys 06-28-2012 09:49 PM

Right on!

You are Soooooo right on! No cookie for the bad boys. Reality time to pay for the repairs and " Man " up. We all did stupid things young. I think the difference today is very very few are held responsible for their actions. When I Hot Rodded my Dads Ford and burned off a tire. I was scolded and made to pay for the new Tire. And then wax the car removing all the tar! And then told buy your own car and beat yours to death. Somehow I lived.

getdul981 06-28-2012 11:01 PM

This is probably one reason that The Villages Golf Cart Store will not rent a cart to anyone under 25 any more. I think that anyone driving a golf cart should have a drivers license also.

paulandjean 06-29-2012 04:25 AM

Looks like 18-20 year olds to me. College students, soldiers on leave, blowing off some steam,I do not know. They will learn they are young.

asianthree 06-29-2012 06:15 AM

Lets hope they have a job or will be getting a job to pay for the cart

Them smart feller's up in Tallahassee.

Yep, Bogie is right once again, it is a state law and not a village one.

I have seen 14 (?) yr. olds driving golf carts with the older person beside them, as well as 14 (??) yr. olds driving them by themselves. (!!!!) Always, ALWAYS they have a smirck on their face.

So, YES!, 14 years of age is far too young to drive a cart! This is considered child's play, but it's not.

Having said that, look at those idiot college age kids just now - gosh, they all could have been killed! Or worse, have killed one of us, as well. With 100,000 people now inhabiting The Villages, maybe it's time to propose BETTER rules / regulations.

I will definitely speak to my older kids when come and visit us next time.

That's the answer. If the people who own the carts say "no you are too young to drive" that would solve many of the actual and potential problems.
We don't need more rules (that people will just ignore) just more people being responsible.

Just say no. Tell them a little white lie. Tell them that this is a retirement community and anyone driving a cart under the age of 55 will get wrinkled.

It is a STATE law the 14 can drive carts.

We don't vote here in a CDD. ON ANYTHING. Something to know before you move here. So please don't move here thinking you can change things.

mfp509 06-29-2012 07:42 AM

I also agree that the law should be changed. However, the one in effect now isn't enforced so would it make a difference? Had a situation in my neighborhood where grandparents actually borrowed a second golf cart to give each of their underage grandaughters a cart to "play in". These girls were racing around the neighborhood. Fortunately it started raining and the racing stopped. If I ever see it again, I will be calling the sheriff for whatever good that will do.

carm310 06-29-2012 08:55 AM

I showed our almost 18 year old daughter the picture on this post and talked to her about it. She just received her driver's license a few months ago (we made all of our children wait to get a license - just because the state says it is ok to drive at 16 doesn't take away a parent's right to make that decision for their family). We plan to teach her to drive our cart when we are there in a couple of weeks - responsibly...and you can bet she will only drive it with her mother or father beside her.

Perhaps every parent and grandparent in TV should print that picture and show it to every visiting young person. I realize there may be an "it will never happen to me mentality" response but the reality of a picture like that may get through to some.

Another thing for anyone borrowing a cart (or renting one) to someone for underage and un-licensed drivers - if you do have insurance you most likely are not covered. Our insurance agent was sure to inform us we are covered for licensed drivers only.

Taltarzac725 06-29-2012 09:05 AM

Our 14 year old niece was too scared to try driving the golf cart. She settled for her 18 year old sister driving her around after the 18 year old received a golf cart training lesson from her grandmother.

I wonder if this is the normal age for golf cart driving in other states in the U.S. I remember a lot of 14 or so snowmobile drivers in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I also remember a lot of them being quite a bit younger than 14.

In this day and age, I really do appreciate it when someone advocates personal responsibility,...not more laws,....kudos! :bigbow:

When I moved here 4 years ago I remember feeling a bit intimidated when I ventured out on my golf cart, and that feeling lasted for a few months until I became familiar with golf cart lanes, white posted entrances & exits, what roads I could and could not drive on, etc.. Now that I know the cart trails, rules, etc....I still venture out with care. It's a dangerous world out there even if you're familiar with it. I can't imagine someone turning their teenage kids or grandkids loose in The Villages by themselves....Just my opinion.

Villageshooter 06-29-2012 11:32 AM

What part of NO dont you understand??

my kids knew the meaning of NO.. to be honest,, for the most part they werent much of a hassle at all,,, now my grandkids,, they ask,, I melt like a Popsicle in the August sun! I had no idea who these Knuckle Heads were,, but they were big time shook up,,, we all learn lessons in life,,, lets just hope they did,,, There are some of us old folks around here that are just as scary,, and we know everything,, just ask us.... i live by the motto ,, IT IS NOT KNOWING HOW SMART I AM , IT IS KNOWING WHAT I DONT KNOW, AND ADMITTING IT!
