Are you serious? Tomato sauce in clam chowder....yuk.

Clams, onions, milk potatoes and some spices. Nothing else needed.

capecodkev 03-18-2013 09:47 AM

Oh, its no contest, New England Clam Chowda. My father has the best receipe which beats every resturant here on Cape Cod.

Born and raised in New Orleans most Cajuns, prefer New England White!

Madelaine Amee 03-18-2013 12:56 PM

Only one for us - New England white -

Sam's Club are selling Legal Seafoods New England Clam Chowder, two containers to a pack for $9.99 ....... or that was the price the last time I bought it which was a while ago, because when I saw it I bought enough to stock the freezer.

Absolutely correct. Adding tomatoes is a desecration

Can you share his recipe????

I used to make it all the time when our son was in high school as it was his favorite......from our vacations at the seacoast........Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and of course Maine..........I always made the white variety.

mfp509 03-18-2013 03:13 PM

Being born and brought up in CT near RI, we also had RI clam chowder which was with a clear clam broth. Also, my family used quahogs when making the chowder. I don't know if that's the same as clams.

capecodkev 03-18-2013 03:21 PM

we use quahogs too, more meaty than clams and they have more flavor.

Quahog fact sheet
Sounds like it's just an Indian name for clams?????
Click above hyperlink...........

Kinds of Clams, at WeLoveClams.com

Quahogs are the largest size and make the most flavorful chowders.

Shimpy 03-18-2013 04:18 PM

I like them both but for health reasons I only eat RED, too much fat in white. By the way since you are in Florida and not New England, all the islands off shore eat the Bohemian chowder, which is RED. The Banana Boat in Boynton Beach Fla. has great chowder if you are visiting S. Fla. and will put a little sherry in it for an exceptional treat.

True, we used to dig for them on the beach in Wareham and my father used to make awesome quahog chowder, but my hubby makes the BEST NE clam chowder! (even won an award for it):-)

Which is your choice? New England or Manhattan yes and yes

spk7951 03-18-2013 04:57 PM

No debate here, New England Clam Chowder. Miss the many places in New England we used to go to but the best around here is Tony's in Cedar Key. Outstanding!

You're right about Tony's. The motorcycle group I ride with goes there several times a year and many bring a cooler to bring home chowder. It's THAT good!

lovsthosebigdogs 03-18-2013 05:35 PM

I like both, love the New England Best, but while we are on the subject of New England (and sorry to hijack this thread) has anyone beside ME ever had fried belly clams (Ipswich)? I do adore them and no one where I live now knows what the heck I am talking about. I swear I am not making this up. Someone tell me you love them also. Worth the fat and calories of fried food if you ask me.

jblum315 03-18-2013 05:41 PM

Yes, I adore them. My husband and I used to drive an hour and a half to the nearest clam shack (in Connecticut) that had them. I love them second only to a good lobster roll.

Yes, I used to go to the BEST place in Ipswich known for their GREAT fried clams when I lived on the No.Shore of Mass. The Ipswich clams were the ONLY (b/c they are so sweet) clams my hubby would use for his :thumbup:clam chowder when he was chef in Boston.

CFrance 03-18-2013 05:56 PM

NE clam chowder, hands down. I never could wrap my taste buds around the combination of tomatoes and seafood or fish.

Northstar 03-18-2013 07:20 PM

I prefer New England Clam Chower, but in the winter time, I'll go with the Manhattan.

Deter1 03-18-2013 07:25 PM

Prefer Manhattan Clam Chowder!

rirlam 03-18-2013 07:31 PM

New England white

Another vote for New England white!

When he has some time to spare, could he please post his prize winning recipe for the New England Clam Chowder.....??

When my daughter and son in law lived on an island ten miles off the coast of Maine, they also dug for clams..........my husband also remembers that "job" in New Jersey.......as a kid.....so his mom could make clam chowder.

Everyone made the "white" New England clam chowder not the red Manhattan version, although I've had both.

Happinow 03-18-2013 07:35 PM

White

Another vote for white!

We love fried clams.......not sure if they are the same type you are talking about. Massachusetts seashore / Cape Cod, etc......

My husband's father used to go clamming in New Jersey and then his mom would also make fried clams.......a lot of work to prepare them, I would think.

buzzy 03-18-2013 07:42 PM

Manhattan first. Rhode Island (clear) second. New England third.

Virtual Geezer 03-18-2013 07:56 PM

Not a picky eater (except for liver and onions which I will never eat) so I like both but prefer New England.
