72 sex offenders

Just a heads up for those who think life in the land of the ethical generation is criminal free or that all crime in TV is committed by another generation.
The following is a map showing the locations of the 72 sex offenders within a 5 mile radius of LSL. Quite a few are Villages residents.

The Sumter Cty Sheriff's website will give you all the info on these people. And these are just the registered ones

BettyCrocked 08-01-2013 12:17 PM

Laurel Bay Lane seems to be popular. Two in the same block!

kittygilchrist 08-01-2013 12:23 PM

As a former child protection agent, I'm glad they have to register and be locatable.
On the other hand, you can become a registered offender by having relations with a
17-year old age mate and forgetting to break up before you celebrate your 18th birthday.

Bonny 08-01-2013 12:28 PM

When my youngest was in kindergarten, 28 years ago, she would sometimes kiss the boys in her class. She would be labeled a sexual predator in this day and age !!

ANd many are younger folks living with their parents. In the thread that you are referencing I didn't state that there was no crime here, but I do say that there is comparatively less crime here than most places in this country.

Depends on the state. Most states, age of consent is 16. Some states also throw in a caveat in regards to age of offender.
The age of consent in Florida is 18, but close in age exemptions exist. By law, the exception permits a person 23 years of age or younger to engage in legal sexual activity with a minor aged 16 or 17.
794.05 Unlawful sexual activity with certain minors.-- (1) A person 24 years of age or older who engages in sexual activity with a person 16 or 17 years of age commits a felony of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084. As used in this section, "sexual activity" means oral, anal, or vaginal penetration by, or union with, the sexual organ of another; however, sexual activity does not include an act done for a bona fide medical purpose Florida code, Title XLVI, Chapter 794

Be on the alert, especially if you are under 80 years old

:( I didn't write that.... you did! :ohdear:

I think we have to remember that in all three cases the number of people who married their cousin/sibling at age 12 are excluded.

Hellooo, most of the offenders are not located in TV.

Golfingnut 08-01-2013 01:21 PM

Wow, I would have thought there would have been more than shown. One more reason to live here. 100000 people and less than a dozen offenders. You won't find better stats than that any where in the world.

Birmingham is the nearest big city. But since it is so important to you, I'll change it to North Shelby County, as I'm sure everyone will know where that is.

Seems like a whole lot more information than needed!

I don't live in TV yet, the home I own is in Palo Alto. Why?

rubicon 08-01-2013 01:45 PM

At one of the POA meetings a few year back one of the members complained that a sex offender rented a house next to hers. She complained the sex offender moved and the owner rented to another sex offender.

so I am wondering how many of the sex offenders in The villages rent or own property?

I am also wondering how many of the owners actually live in The villages or simply buy up property here and rent it out?

This is a concern to me because it seems that anything of this nature receives unfair and unnecessary coverage from newspapers outside The Villages, etc Consider the hyperbole concerning STD's, swinger clubs

Family Watchdog is good for mapping and showing the convictions, mug shots etc. of the offenders. The crime stats are also there to see the rate per x-number of population, for various levels and types of crime.

Once the map is up showing the addresses of offenders, the menu bar across the top of the map has a choice for showing the names and addresses in a list that is easier to read data on quickly.

National Sex Offender Registry - Family Watchdog

Duvalboomer 08-01-2013 02:00 PM

First there are people willing and waiting to take advantage of others in every community, no place is 100% safe. Second I'm not sure of the Florida laws but in many states if you pee outside and get caught you have to register as a sex offender

BettyCrocked 08-01-2013 02:01 PM

Very good points. As to finding out whether they rent or own, you can find the names on the list at the county website, and you can also find the owner of any property on the county website.
As for renting, I do rent my home out at times and fortunately I have resources that many do not. As a private investigator, I am able to do background checks on anyone that I rent to. I do not rent to sex offenders, nor do I rent to anyone whose background does not make me comfortable having them in my home.

Do you advise the potential renters of the background check?

I'm glad you posted that. I first found the sex offender list several years ago when we began our research of The Villages. I was a bit shocked at the time that so many of them would want to live with a bunch of older retirees........but I guess sex offenders age , just like the rest of us.

The "news" was kind of downplayed as I recall.......

I also checked out our state......and there are many more in TV than in the towns I checked out.

Why would I care? Well, for one, we would have young grandchildren visiting....ages "baby", two years old, eight years old, eleven years old and now the eldest is nineteen years old........all girls except for the eleven year old boy.

Just being safe, rather than sorry. I would not buy in a neighborhood with registered sex offenders.........that's for sure.

Especially how the postings of that "pole dancing" motel room bedroom for rent, posted on TOTV, was shown........and then suddenly POOF it disappeared. They are out there. Very weird....to say the least.

Maybe we've been sheltered, although our town is changing as well, but again, thanks for posting...........people should be aware.

Funny........for sure. However, back when I checked out the list, they actually named the sex act they had been busted for.....so probably if we look now, it should name their crime.

I doubt if these are teens caught sexting on their I-phones, but sleezy old guys........and maybe some middle aged guys as well, if my memory holds.

And you buy where there are no sex offenders.............then one moves in accross the street. What do you do then?

I don't have to. Everything I look up is public record. But it sure is helpful to know if a person who wants to rent my house has a history of suing people, or being sued for property damage.

The website not only describes the offense, it shows a picture. I looked because I prefer to see the facts in black and white than generalize and make assumptions. And you're absolutely right. Many are geriatric perverts.

Indydealmaker 08-01-2013 03:36 PM

I believe that you have to register as a sex offender if you have been convicted of domestic violence. This is an abuse of the system IMO and dilutes the effect of the overall program. Generally, a person involved in spousal abuse is not a threat to the general public.

This is from the DOJ:
Among felony assault defendants
charged with family violence in State
courts, 84% had at least one prior arrest
for either a felony or a misdemeanor
(not necessarily for family violence),
and 73% had been previously convicted
of some type of felony or misdemeanor
(not necessarily family violence).

Domestic violence offenders react with violence, whether it's a family member or someone who cut in front of them. It's not about a guy hating his wife, it's about anger management and control.

Also, what is the population of YOUR zip code and if your zip is not TV, why so you care how many are here? Just curious

Dr Winston O Boogie jr 08-01-2013 08:51 PM

72 in a community of 100,000 sounds pretty good. I'd like to see the rates in other cities of that size.

KathieI 08-01-2013 09:08 PM

I started to receive this list about 3 years ago and I followed through on one address because it was near my girlfriend. What really concerns me is that she knew the people who lived in that particular house and there wasn't a person of that name living there. So what are they doing??? Giving the authorities wrong addresses and its accepted without checking???

Also, the system is too broken to get all exited about this. I was on a jury in Bushnell and the case was statutory rape. The defendant changed his plea about 3/4 into the case with the agreement that he would not be put on a Sex Offender's list if he pled guilty....but he was no longer allowed to be a coach for girls softball teams... BIG DEAL!!!!

My point is that I was answering someone's question about where I live. Which, by the way, has nothing to do with sex offenders in TV.
I realize that some are having trouble following the point of this post. There really shouldn't have to be a point, since most people should care how many sex offenders live on their street. Especially given the frenzied panic that some seem to go into every time a crime happens.
There is a certain group of posters here who seem to want to blame every bad thing that happens on somebody's grandkids or kids (while their own kids and grandkids are angels, of course). The point is, there are OLD PEOPLE who commit crimes, too. Many from the "ethical generation".
While many want to think I am bashing TV, and therefore respond with questions about my hometown (how clever!), that is not the case at all. As a matter of fact, there is one offender on that list who does some contract work for me!
Why do I care? I own a home there and spend a lot of time there. Is that ok?

And to those who have sent PM's and emails, thanks for your kind words!
