Rose Thief

A neighbor told me yesterday that her husband caught a man in their yard cutting roses and putting them in a cooler. When he asked him what he was doing, the guy just said "I like roses. " The neighbor asked him to leave or he would call the police. He just continued to stand there. Their next door neighbor said there were 2 men in their yard looking around. One of them matched the description of the "rose thief." This is just creepy having strangers wandering around in ones yard.

graciegirl 12-04-2013 09:56 AM

VERY strange!!! Annoying, Outrageous.

Their moms didn't get the part about STAY OUTA THEIR YARD and DON'T TOUCH IT IF IT ISN'T YOURS across.

What part of town do you live in?

missypie 12-04-2013 09:57 AM

It's called stealing.

jblum315 12-04-2013 10:02 AM

I used to have day lilies growing in profusion along the edges of my lot in NY and people would just help themselves until I had no blooms left. Never saw anyone doing it. . .

eremite06 12-04-2013 10:37 AM

People steal a lot of items from restaurants as well, ie., salt & pepper shakers from Ruby Tuesday.

Villageshooter 12-04-2013 10:40 AM

In fact, EVERYONE will stop coming around.

And then prepare yourself for the cost of a legal bill which you will richly deserve. Rose theft/trespass hardly qualify as capital offenses nor rise to the level of requiring self defense. However threatening others with a gun. Sadly I don't believe based on your name and your posting history that you meant your comment as a joke.

gerryann 12-04-2013 11:13 AM

Alzeimers or dementia come to mind.....misunderstanding what they are doing...

no where did i say shoot them,, NEVER,,, i carry my gun like i wear my watch,, i realize the law, and the ramifications,, but i surely would send a message to the rose thiefs, if that is what they are in my yard for, which i highly doubt,,i wear very loose fitting underwear,, i never get my panties in a wad over ANYTHING,, you might want to try it,,,, we all have less days ahead of us then we have behind us,,

BobnBev 12-04-2013 11:26 AM

Could be casing the neighborhood for their next break-in.

If you didn't, you should have called the Sheriff immediately.

If someone is trespassing on my property and refuses to leave, I would feel threatened. I have no idea if this person is dangerous. I would call the police, copy down the car tags, and show him that I'm going to defend myself.

Rose Thief

Did this actually happen in The Villages? If not, this post may cause undue concern. Naturally, we all want to be aware of what goes on in our neighborhoods, but let's not frighten or incite people unnecessarily.

Yes I agree and taking a few pics with your phone will help also.

I agree except for the your term: "very loose fitting underware"

Tried that once got my ankles twisted and almost broke my nose!

blueash 12-04-2013 11:53 AM

It is not necessary for you to shoot them for you to be in violation of the law. I'm sure as a very well informed gun owner you knew that. I'm sure you also know there are huge differences between wearing a watch and a gun and your seeming to equate them as equally benign is humor?
There is a law against display of a weapon as a means of making a threat.
790.10 Improper exhibition of dangerous weapons or firearms.—If any person having or carrying any dirk, sword, sword cane, firearm, electric weapon or device, or other weapon shall, in the presence of one or more persons, exhibit the same in a rude, careless, angry, or threatening manner, not in necessary self-defense, the person so offending shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

However, it is possible that people following your advise will instead face aggravated assault without intention to kill as your suggested action contains all the required elements of that felony:
Florida Statutes

784.011 Assault.—

(1) An “assault” is an intentional, unlawful threat by word or act to do violence to the person of another, coupled with an apparent ability to do so, and doing some act which creates a well-founded fear in such other person that such violence is imminent.

(2) Whoever commits an assault shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

784.021 Aggravated assault.—

(1) An “aggravated assault” is an assault:

(a) With a deadly weapon without intent to kill; or
(b) With an intent to commit a felony.

(2) Whoever commits an aggravated assault shall be guilty of a felony of the third degree,

Elements

To prove the crime of Assault, the State must prove the following three elements beyond a reasonable doubt:

1. Defendant intentionally and unlawfully threatened, either by word or act, to do violence to victim.
2. At the time, defendant appeared to have the ability to carry out the threat.
3. The act of defendant created in the mind of victim a well-founded fear that the violence was about to take place.

Sounds like a job for 'the posse', doesn't it, gracie? :)

You are very reasonable. I have lived here for six years and no one stole anything and the only folks who cut through my yard were going to the pool. Sweetie shot them.

JUST KIDDING.

I thought so too gerryann, we all have lived for a LONG time and this whole episode is MOST unusual. ANYWHERE.

OBXNana 12-04-2013 12:16 PM

I'm back to the original post. Was this in The Villages?

villagerjack 12-04-2013 12:17 PM

Never had anyone steal anything in 7 years.

Boy thats the truth. When my spouse worked at Citizens, residents would come in and take the whole basket of apples. One person even boasted that they made apple crisp with them. Others would come in and take the newspapers and three or four bags of popcorn. Needless to say, we live among some people with sticky fingers....

Villageshooter 12-04-2013 12:17 PM

I remember you now.

Your advice is heeded by me.

No wonder you posted it. It was as I first said. OUTRAGEOUS. I hope that someone got their license plate or some other identifying information. You are not contiguous to other villages there, but in between two sections of non village homes.

Not that that matters in the whole scheme of things. Very troubling. With a cooler, cutting someone else's roses! Beyond audacious.

Jaggy 12-04-2013 12:41 PM

Did we ever figure out where this happened?? If the Villages, which one??

I always thought cooler + young = beer.:beer3::eek::D

raynan 12-04-2013 06:18 PM

I think they were checking to see if anyone was home by cutting the flowers. I know, I get suspicious when strangers are in the neighborhood.

While certainly not on the topic of the OP, I simply posted the law regarding the display of firearms, or other armaments in what may be regarded by the bystander as a threat. One can speak the person on your property, one can photograph, one can call the police. What you seemingly cannot do it leave your home and use a potentially lethal weapon to drive the rose picker away. I am neither a lawyer nor peace officer so I may be wrong.

kaydee 12-04-2013 10:19 PM

call the police...it is a violation
