How about a moratorium?

What if we were to make January a month of no negative posts? That is, if a newbie posts about something occurring, we thank them for the information instead of doubting their word? If someone says something you disagree with, you thank them for their opinion and keep your negative thoughts to yourself? If you get the urge to be snarky, you simply type your response but don't send it (deleting it later)? If you get the urge to be negative for any reason, you say it to yourself but don't post it?

I promise to not roll my eyes at VPL food posts (sorry, VPL, couldn't resist). I promise to not think "snarky" when Doug is being witty (again, just couldn't resist). I promise to not let the praises to the rafters about the Morses get stuck in my craw and "force" me to say something. I promise that if I don't like the food or service in a restaurant, I will keep it to myself for 31 days. I promise to not let those poor, misguided conservative souls get under my skin.

I second that motion! Happy New Year everyone!

CarolSells 12-29-2013 09:21 AM

Redwitch, you are such a marvelous person. We are all very blessed to be a party to your wisdom.

And how about these:

Let's don't pick on all people of a certain profession because we think we understand how their profession works.

If people post that The Purple People Eater was sighted in their neighborhood just let it go.

True story. A elderly lady in south Atlanta called the police station to report that GIANT turkeys were running all about in her backyard. Deputy rolled his eye, I'm sure, and they all had a good laugh. Turns out that a truck had overturned on nearby I-75 and a bunch of ostriches had escaped!

Golfingnut 12-29-2013 09:39 AM

I'm in.

glgene 12-29-2013 09:49 AM

Yes...during January (and thereafter) a cup filled 50% is 1/2 full...not 1/2 empty.

Ahhh-TV! We're living the dream in Paradise.

Gene

Redwitch. You know I think the world of you but never more than today. Excellent plan.

I will try to be nice.

Redwitch, as usual, is the voice of sanity and I totally agree with her plan.

EXCELENTE ! Such a better thread than mine that focussed on what was wrong ....Redwitch actually came up with a positive solution. Bravo! I'm in.

l2ridehd 12-29-2013 11:13 AM

So for the whole month we can have no dog poop, round about, bad food, or electric vs gas debates? There will be no posts.

Sure there will -- lots of stuff for sale. And if you can talk about dog poop, round abouts, bad food and electric v. gas and be civil, don't see why they have to be unmentionables.

Who knows, maybe we'll have a whole of month of how nice it was visiting so and so; how great the food and service was at such and such; how seeing the tail wagging the dog on its walk was such a great joy; and so on that we won't have to pick on someone cause we disagree or are afraid they might be a troll or it doesn't fit our sensibilities of behavior.

njbchbum 12-29-2013 11:42 AM

Can we have the political forum brought back for that same duration?

billethkid 12-29-2013 11:46 AM

why not....it is what most do anyway everyday.

Maybe the admin would allow political discussions with these rules in place.....well ya never know!!

Golfingnut 12-29-2013 12:09 PM

We have a very nice compliment of forums right now. Let's not add any more please.

Would this be considered "negative?"

:D

I have been here long enough to be positive the return of a certain form would bring back very negative posts and lots of them. No offense to those in favor, but it was closed for that very reason.

I respect the gesture and the suggestion. However, that's been done before. It was called Liar Liar with Jim Carrey. It did not work in the movie nor will it work here.

Its one thing to be honest, quite another to be nasty. Beside which how does one take the negative out of something that is negative?

I believe people should speak their minds as it is more honest and if they are negative by others standards, that's on them ,not you or me and they have to live with themselves

If everyone followed your suggestions to the letter TOTV threads would all be shut down except for For Sale or Just For Fun and a few others.

Hope that is not too negative for some:D Just saying.............

I hate to shatter the general spirit of comity with which your suggestion has been received, but I doubt that I have the necessary reserve of personal restraint to prevent me from "correcting" someone who says something with which I disagree.

That may be, in part, because I don't think I express myself with negative thoughts, but rather attempt to be positive and uplifting with my reasoned arguments in correcting the misconceptions or errors in reasoning of others.

(You may note that I write very long sentences; the first one, above, is about 41 words long. I learned long ago that it is characteristic of someone who spends too long in administrative positions in the federal government to write excessively long sentences.)

(You may also note that there is a not-too-subtle undertone of arrogance in my assumption that my opinion will be the correct one. I can't blame that on government service; that's just me. Well, not really. I think of myself as the alternate persona of Underdog; you remember..... "humble and lovable Shoeshine Boy.")

Well, I guess I've dug a deep enough hole for myself. I'll go now, leaving you with the reminder that it's not January yet.

I have to agree with rubicon on this one , Dee. Two reasons: I don't want a "fluffy" forum; and I think we should all debate/speak our minds and let the moderator decide who the offenders are.

Much as I respect you, Dee, your post asking for the cessation of negative posts actually became a negative post with your examples of what you are thinking but won't say for a month!:22yikes:

You missed my point, which was a joke.

I was not expressing a view regarding the restoration of a political forum.

I was indicating that a post opposing the restoration of a political forum was a negative posting since it opposed a suggestion that had been made by someone else.

(Indicating, perhaps, the impractical side of redwitch's suggestion.)

I think I'm understanding why some attempts at humor on TOTV fall flat.

And I agree there would be a lot more fluff but maybe, just, maybe, it can get us all to stop and think before we post and hurt another's feelings. There is no way possible that this forum can be all sunshine and lollipops (thank goodness!) -- bad things happen to us, our neighbors, our friends, our community. And I'm not asking that we ignore the bad things in our lives for even one minute, let alone a whole month, just that we stop with all the negativity; stop doubting every post that doesn't fit our conceptions of TV; basically, stop telling folks that something didn't happen just cause you didn't hear of it or the paper didn't mention it. Maybe a month of not putting down someone or something because they/it weren't perfect will get us in the habit of thinking before we post. Certainly can't hurt to try.

billethkid 12-29-2013 02:49 PM

i can't wait for January then at least there won't be a negative comment about the nature of a political forum:angel:
