Firemen & EMT's

How many know and care that The Villages allegedly pay their Fireman and EMT's about 20% LESS than the area's around us. That is why we have a higher turn over of these very valuable skills. I just found out today and was surprisd. When we have needed them for any reason (e.g. replace smoke detectors etc.) they have been proompt and courteous and make you proud they are our firemen or EMT's. I doubt this note will do anything to help them get up to the local standards but at least it brings the terrible treatment to the attention of all readers. Be sure to say thanks when you see them as the least we can give them is appreciation for all that they do and for less rewards than others. :ohdear:

Can you PROVE this????

What are the salaries of firefighters and EMTs in The Villages? What are the salaries for the same positions in Lady Lake and Wildwood?

graciegirl 06-26-2014 09:35 AM

The below information says the average salary of a fire fighter in Florida is $28,000.

Sumter County, FL - Official Website http://www.indeed.com/salary/q-Firef...l-Florida.html

Source of the following information:
Firefighter EMT Paramedic Salary in The Villages, FL | Indeed.com

Average Firefighter EMT Paramedic Salary

The Villages $67,000
Ocala 70,000
Leesburg 60,000
Lady Lake 65,000
Wildwood 66,000

Just the average doesn't consider staffing levels or seniority.
A simple Google search will point out the the 20% is bogus.

Are our firefighter's & EMT's underpaid? Your damn right if they are picking me up off my death bed!

I can't imagine doing their job for $28K. The services they provide are far too valuable and the risks far too high for such a paltry amount. Firefighters and EMTs deserve to earn far, far more and we should all be grateful that they are so dedicated.

As to TV first responders earning less than counterparts, I can't say I've heard this before but it doesn't particularly surprise me. Like many other positions here, the benefits (mainly the Charter School) outweigh the lower salary for so many TV employees. Can't say that is the right thing, but it does seem to be THE thing.

I recently spoke to a Firefighter/EMT who told me that he loves working in TV but will be leaving since the pay is much lower than other areas and their pension is miserable. He said there is a big turnover because of this. I found this disturbing since he was a very impressive young man with a great deal of experience. I believe the pension being offered is far below other areas.

Is this just a guess or do you have some data to support your statement?

HEY....you guys are getting to be like a certain poster who only reads the first post. I think Bogie provided us with the answer above.

Florida's average firefighter pay is $28K And The Villages average firefighter pay is $67K

its no different than the corporate world. some companys pay more than others for the same work. the only place where everyone is the same is in the communist world. so whars your point?

getdul981 06-26-2014 01:25 PM

Where we came from, the Rescue Squads were all volunteer for many years. My wife and I were both Cardiac-EMT's and ran calls for $0.00. Talk equal pay for equal work!!

spk7951 06-26-2014 01:27 PM

The last job posting I saw for a Villages Firefighter position listed a starting salary in the $39,000 per year range but I do not remember if the medical requirement was for an EMT or Paramedic. Overtime surely could bring that figure higher.

I do recall Janet Tutt mentioning, I think earlier this year, that a study was being done to look at pay differences of all district employees due to the high turnover ratio.

mulligan 06-26-2014 01:39 PM

A simple vote to be represented by a strong union could correct that right now.

GaryW 06-26-2014 02:06 PM

I live right beside 2 of The Villages Firemen. I have never heard them say anything about it. I know they are very hard working and have been on the Fire Dept for awhile now. Seem like they are happy, but we do not talk about how much they make and stuff like that.

I am sure with most Public Service Jobs they are underpaid for what they could face in a fire.

As with a very good friend of mine that works for the Florida Highway Patrol. I know he is underpaid, I know what he makes and I would not do that job for that,. He loves law enforcement and helping people, so he puts up with it. It was his lifes dream. The only way he makes good money is to work overtime or do special details like escorting trucks and events on his time. They get paid good to do that.
But I would question someone voicing that out to just anyone,, you have not clue what is real or maybe lets say stretched somewhat....

Just a thought. :coolsmiley:
