A friend of my husband's, who used to live in our town, but relocated to the Daytona Beach area several years ago, sent him this new series of photos......after sending us the first pic on Sunday.

He has a first cousin/family in Spring Hill, a retired flight attendant. Her father & my husband's mom were siblings. I also have a first cousin in Spring Hill. The homes are lovely there; unfortunately, they have their sink hole issues..........it's a huge developement convenient to the Tampa Bay/Saint Pete area/airport........plus not far from Brooksville to the north where we have other relatives of my husband. Also a sinkhole area.

Witnesses say they saw the ground drop and then a cloud of dust and dirt.
"Out of nowhere the earth just went straight up in the air," said neighbor Margaret Helmick. "It exploded up in the air."

When deputies arrived, they measured the hole to be approximately 25x25 yards and 30 feet deep.

"More and more of it sinked into the ground as the police showed up here," said neighbor Sam Haneiwich. "A big hole just opened up."

The hole grew to approximately 40x40 yards, still at 30 feet deep. Officials said the hole had stopped growing as of 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Sadly sinkholes happen. Thankfully not every day. So do other natural disasters. Springhill is near Daytona? No, Tampa?

It's near Brooksville, on the Gulf side.

Daytona beach is on east coast; spring hill is near tampa st pete
 

Spring Hill is a large development near the Tampa/St. Pete area.
I thought I mentioned that in the post. We have cousins in Spring Hill.
Homes are beautiful, but living there is risky. The lady who sent us the "news" originally moved to DAYTONA BEACH which is on the east coast of Florida, then they bought a house in DELAND......they are now on west coast near Spring Hill. She knew that our original plans were to retire to Florida; guess he hasn't mentioned to her that we will now be SNOW BIRDS......after coming to the conclusion/decision to retain our northern home. We don't even like our own humidity so realize we will not be able to tolerate the summers in Fl. Soon we will have cool crisp autumn weather, so for our particular circumstances, four seasons is best.....being a snow bird is best.........for us. There are many many snowbirds that are welcomed back to The Villages & other regions of Fl.

Yes, that is correct.......it's slightly below Brooksville. Our uncle & aunt lived in Brooksville until they passed away; now their son owns the home.
Other cousins of both of us live in Spring Hill. Huge development close to Tampa Bay/St. Pete area. This one is NOT the first sinkhole. They are all over the area. I'm glad we did our research as we are getting too old for that type of "excitement".


I can't imagine anything like that happening on our street.
At least Vermont doesn't have catastrophic ground collapse.
The last time our state had roads wash away was when Hurricane Irene hit really bad up the middle of our state, up the spine of the Green Mountains, a few years ago. Actually, I think it was a tropical storm here. Very rare.

One never knows.

Watch out for all the trees falling on your house and being snowbound without electricity. Being a snowbird does not stop you from worrying about storms and frozen pipes while you are away.

ppppfffttttt that lil thing and those that have happened in TV are not sinkholes ... more like pot holes. Now if you want to know what a real sinkhole looks like:

I was playing a softball game in the city rec complex across the street and WPPD came running over and told us to leave ...NOW!! The swimming pool mentioned was part of the rec complex ... see the shot out the broken part of the pool into the sinkhole at 2:30

In the vid it mentions a house the sinkhole ate ..... that is actually where it started. An elderly lady was sitting on her front porch and a tree in her front yard just started to disappear into the ground. Fortunately she and her husband were able to get out in time!

Why is living there risky?

Sink holes are all over Florida!

Since there are no catastrophic incidents that ever happen in Vermont, I surely would consider never moving away to a place where bad things happen on a regular basis.

There was ANOTHER sink hole in Harrisburg, PA last week. From what has been on the news, the entire street has been evacuated for a couple months. It isn't an area I frequent, but is within 20 miles of where we live. In Palmyra, PA (neighbor to Hershey) that no sooner has one sink hole supposedly filled and another opens.

Sink holes exist in many areas and it would be devastating to have your home and contents swallowed up. But, it seems Florida gets the brunt of the news coverage when it comes to sink holes.
