Young people and Golf carts
 

I am urging Grandparents, that if they allow their Grandchildren to drive their Golf carts, road rules and speed be discussed before they are allowed to go out freely on the Golf paths Yesterday, my husband and I were returning home after playing Belle Glade, as we started down the ramp into the tunnel, on Morse) a golf cart with a teenage girl and boy came out of the tunnel at a high rate of speed, as we started to turn into the tunnel, two teenage girls,(obviously following them) cut the corner, and barely missed hitting us. I yelled and they just laughed and shot the usual finger sign. I was furious, and ready to turn around and go after them, but my husband, said lets go home and have a glass of wine. I cannot understand, why young people have such disrespect. I have 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. and not one them has every behaved in such a manner (they are not allowed to drive the Golf cart without me or my husband). Golf carts are not toys and should be respected as a vehicle that can cause bodily injury. I feel the age to drive should be 16, with a drivers test included.

Oh Nana, you really don't know for sure if your grandchildren are as perfect as you believe. When I taught school I saw many behaviors that mommies and daddies never thought Jr. Would or could say or do.

On the other hand, you have every right to be upset with the kids.

Look on the bright side in a few days we all will return to only dealing with the the folks running late for their tee times speeding around cutting us all off and the one finger salute to go with it. Just less competition on the paths !

Grandparents telling their grandkids what/what not to do is like telling protestors that the Grand Jury decisions were correct. THEY'RE NOT GOING TO LISTEN. All you can do is :cus: at the :gc:

Exactly. Parents and "leaders" are teaching their kids that they should be insubordinate to teachers……and police officers. Such parents and "leaders" are worse than the kids--who have age and immaturity as an excuse.

On the subject of too-young cart drivers, I don't think many of the adults involved are thinking about the anguish and then lawsuits that would ruin many lives if a preteen or teen killed somebody with the cart, and maimed/killed themselves on it.

I think the kids and grandparents/parents should be ticketed and the teen's drivers licensing postponed if they're caught speeding, driving on the streets under driving age of 16 and without a license. I think there was a case of that in Fruitland Park a few months ago.

Our golf cart insurance policy requires a licensed driver be behind the wheel. Our grandkids are not 16, but looking back at our kids at 16, I think we will be a passenger when our grandkids are licensed and want to drive the cart.

Now that our kids are mid to late 30's we are finding out things we never knew. We knew they weren't perfect, but always got descent grades, were involved with activities, and never got into trouble. Now we can hear them laughing about some of the things they got away with and we never knew. We lived in a kid friendly development and flashlight tag all over the community happened often late at night when the parents were sound asleep. These are not things that are illegal, but would have been a grounding in our household had we known.

From this Nana to Nana13, when all your kids are together, listen close, because I have a feeling they have some tales to tell of what they did while living at home that you never knew happened!

Your husband was right to not confront the driver of the cart, but I fully understand why your instinct was to follow them and have a chat with them. Had I been in your shoes, and no hubby with me, I probably would have tried to follow them home to speak to the adult in the house.

Last week I saw a group of 5 kids going down Buena Vista in a not so street legal golf cart.....2 in the front and 3 piled in the back. :shocked:

Yes. And somebody gave them the keys to the cart…..or made the keys available for them to just take and run.

Instead of piling onto the o.p. for allegedly saying her 11 grandkids never did anything wrong and thus she's judged by some here to be wearing blinders, read what she actually said:

"I have 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. and not one them has every behaved in such a manner (they are not allowed to drive the Golf cart without me or my husband)."

She was talking about their use of the cart, not their every deed while away from them and at school or elsewhere.

The parents and grandparents who are allowing the kids to take the cart without supervision are the ones who need to be nailed.

Exactly! Right on target. Teaching today is extremely stressful and may I add dangerous.:ho:

A friendly reminder to my fellow grandparents,you and you alone are financially responsible for any actions by anyone operating your golf cart.Perhaps you do not care about losing everything you have worked and saved for but I do.Please learn to use common sense when you allow anyone to use your golf cart.If your 14 year old grandchild asked you for the car keys what would you say.Our home town is not a play ground and our golf carts are not toys.

After all of the anti-dog threads, this is a good time to point out:

My dog does not speed in the golf cart
My dog does not drive recklessly
My dog does not give other drivers the finger
My dog does not wreck my golf cart

If we are going to ban all dogs because a few owners don't pick up after them, I propose we ban all grandchildren based on the ones that are a problem...

My dog hasn't done any of the above unless he's had to much to drink and gets beligerant>:duck:

It scares me to see the young ones driving, but even more so to see them wearing earphones. Not only can they not hear what is going on around them, but they are also distracted by their music.
