BE VERY AWARE OF Village Pet Spa

I've gone to Village Pet Spa for grooming and boarding for 2 years. I love Julia who groomed my 2 dogs. I boarded for a week with them, but the last time I boarded with them for 2 weeks. I picked them up after 2 weeks and they were INFESTED with TICKS. So bad that I took them to the Vet, because they were suffering so badly.

The dogs are always on flea and tick meds. and I get my courtyard villa sprayed. So before you start telling me it couldn't have been caused by them, I do want to share with you that the ticks have been conquered after 2 long weeks and there has not been a recurrence since....needless to say I'm never going back....

So sorry for you and your dogs, I'd hate for that to happen to my dogs.
But in fairness, you have had a 2 year relationship with this establishment, and I assume no problems. I very much doubt the Pet Spa owners made a trip to "Ticks-R-Us" and bought a bushel full to infest the dogs in their care. Most likely they hitchhiked in on some other dog, maybe one that did not have an owner as caring as you. Could this have been spotted? Maybe, who knows. It does sound like an isolated incident on the face of it. I might also check with your Vet and ask why your dogs tick meds were ineffective in protecting them from this infestation. Hope it never happens again and Merry Christmas!

You are so right.
Too bad the damage has already been done with the post on here and the Internet forever.

My friend has boarded her dogs there for years without a problem. She loves the place.

I am concerned about this because my dog is going there over Christmas vacation. What did the owner say when you brought this to her attention? Was there any kind of explanation? I am so sorry for your dogs and for you that this happened.

Something else to consider .... when I first moved to The Villages 4 1/2 years ago, my vet told me to keep my dogs away from the pine straw, as it is a prime location for them to pick up ticks. We never saw pine straw as bedding before, not even in Tampa where we lived for 7 years prior. So, if the OP had any fresh pine straw recently layed or if Village Pet Spa had put down pine straw possibly around where the dogs go out, that could be the cause.
So happy your two are doing fine. As I am sure you are aware, keep an eye out for any unusual health issues or blotchy skin rash, as ticks spread lyme disease. Check yourself also.

golfing eagles 12-19-2015 05:17 AM

Never hurts to be aware, but please don't panic over the prospect of you or your dogs getting lyme disease. Borellia burgdorferi (bacteria causing lyme) is spread by Ixodes scapularis (black legged deer tick) in the eastern US, specifically the northeast and upper Midwest. The chances of acquiring it in Florida are extremely low. Human incidence in FL is 0.4/100,000, and most cases were acquired by travel elsewhere. By contrast the incidence in Maine is 87.9, even Alaska was 0.7, so no need to panic. If you do watch for a rash, erythema chronicum migrans (ECM), it looks like a bulls eye target at least 3 inches across. (sorry Luvr, not blotchy) I've seen hundreds of them and they are pretty distinctive. Unfortunately, Southern tick associated rash illness (STARI) has a similar rash, is transmitted by the lone star tick, and is more prevalent in the south. It does not have the same consequences as lyme.

Available at your vet for tick prevention... Nexguard and Bravecto.

Better place for boarding...Bedtime Tails

That happened to our dogs in July. They were there for 11 days. Also had them groomed there. When they can home we found ticks on them. The owner gave me a song and a dance. To bad, the groomer did a great job, but no wont go back. Sorry folks that place had a bad reputations years ago but I thought with new owners it was better but I guess not.

Village Pet Spa - Home

Here's a link to the Villages Pet Spa. I hope someone from there will give an explanation on TOTV.

My friend just took her two dogs to Villages Pet Spa this morning.
She said it was extremely busy with lots of people taking their dogs in for boarding over Christmas.

We boarded our dog at Villages Pet Spa in October of this year. We selected Villages Pet Spa after visiting other kennels in the area. We found Villages Pet Spa to be very clean compared to the others. I am at a loss how a dog could get ticks at this kennel. I would hope the OP has contacted the management for their comments.

I do not like to see people post complaints about a business, be it a restaurant or boarding kennel, without having talked to the management to resolve the issue.

I would not hesitate to board my dog here again.

red tail 12-22-2015 05:49 PM

don't blame the kennel for your failure to protect your dog with revolution which will prevent any ticks or fleas.

virgind 12-22-2015 07:44 PM

When you dont have a tick problem till you take a pet somewhere as pet boarding where do you think a problem is.
