Let's Write a Comedy!

have a lot of friends in the "theatre" crowd here and was thinking it would be fun to write a comedy about the aversion most singles here have to the thought of marriage....can picture six guys talking among themselves and six women talking among themselves and what one might overhear.....would love some funny contributions from you folks out there :) and some serious ones, too!

Hey!! If you want experts on an aversion to the thought of marriage, you need to include married folks in your research!!! ;)

of course, anyone is welcome to put in their two cents :)

One of my aunts lost her husband who worked for a railroad to a heart attack while in her forties. She a did not want to remarry and lose her widow's benefits although she finally did to a man who bought her a new Cadillac and promised to take care of her - which he did.

Personally I do not know a single woman who does not want to remarry if she met the right man.

Men are friends all their lives. Women are friends until they become wives.

Bonnevie 04-08-2016 08:51 AM

lots of them

I know lots....especially at our age. Among reasons:
men worry as they age their health deteriorates and they want someone to take care of them
gold diggers (the nurse with the purse concept)
having been there done that and don't want to do it again
we like living alone
can have cheese and crackers for dinner and no complaints
can use the remote control anytime we want
have great friends to socialize with
we are not lonely....it is far worse to be lonely while married

i'd love to help with the comedy

In my case I was married 17 years before the divorce. After that educational experience that came at great expense, I concluded that I can not afford to risk splinting my life savings again.

Have had that same thought many times Dianne, I already wrote a part for you.
I'm in. My house available for meetings.

I read the OP yesterday, and have spent the last 24 hours trying to envision six men sitting around talking about marriage.

Bonnievie, I understand what you wrote. That is why I qualified my statement with "if she met the right man". What I wrote holds true based on my conversations with women I know very well and who are comfortable enough with me to share their actual deep feelings. I agree that it is far worse to be lonely while married. Been there, done that! I greatly prefer being single than being married to the wrong person.

Although I am quite happy with my single life today if I met the right lady I feel it could get better.

As we age (I am 74) it becomes increasingly difficult to find desirable mates from an ever shrinking pool of viable candidates, no question about it.

chachacha 04-08-2016 11:08 AM

enjoying all the back and forth....if we could get manabouttown to move here he would have a much bigger pool! all statements very true and worth fleshing out into characters in a play...maybe the men sitting around talking is not realistic :)

Why I prefer singledom

1. No manly smells emanating from the bathroom

2. Belching is not a joyful sound

3. The remote is mine -- my pets really don't care what I watch

4. I get to drive the car

5. I DO ask directions

6. No kvetching about using his razor

7. I know when I'm almost out of something

8. No one to tell me how, when or why to do something

9. I like me well enough to enjoy my own company.

Honestly, if the "right" man came along at this stage of my life, I think I'd run like crazy. I like having male friends -- their interests are closer to the things I like than most female interests (cars, sports, action movies/books, scifi) but, at the end of the conversation, I want to go my merry way.

I can handle that just fine, thanks.

As he gropes her at the door after the first date, she escapes inside and says to her imaginary dog,
"It's better to be single than to wish you were."

The right man list?
Has most of his teeth.
Does not wet the bed.

Bonnevie 04-08-2016 03:31 PM

I also must hasten to add that I love seeing all the seemingly long time happy couples here and I wish that had happened to me. Unfortunately, my experiences were not happy. However, these couples have shared children, good times, bad times, they have a history with each other. At this stage of my life I like living alone too much. I get to do what I want when I want to and if I want to stay home and watch tv with the dogs, I can.
