Coming from Ohio, we didn't have Publix grocery stores. I have discovered a few great products they carry and wondered if other northerners have more to share.

The Subs on whole grain bread. (not a heavy bread)

The "Rocky Road Gournet Brownie" (wish I didn't know about this one!)

The flowers for $3.34, they keep for well over a week and make my days when here alone. (hubby not retired or found emplyement here yet)

Gilchrist Brand Sausages (got to try these this week, no MSG, made in Ocala, yum, put these on the list)

I hear the Publix sherbert in BERRY BLAST is very good. Gonna buy some today and I'll let you know.

Let me and others know what you like at area grocerys. BTW, I have not gone to Fresh Market, Sweetbays or others.....yet!

We have not found anything that matches Kroger or Jungle Jims. Still searching. Products we have in Cincy - I called manufacturer - and they do not sell in Florida. If you see things - just email company to see if they sell in Central Florida. Publix so far is our store here

This regional availability of certain items is not at all unusual. There was a Swanson's product that I'd bought fairly often in KC & St. Louis but couldn't find anywhere in the DC area. I contacted Campbell's (Swanson's owner) and was told it was not distributed in the DC region -- no reason, just not done. Campbell's was nice enough to send me multiple coupons for Campbell's, Swanson's, and other associated brands, even one foor my intended product. But no cans of goodies! Then on a road trip one day, I happened to be in a supermarket in mid-PA. They had my product! I bought about a six-month supply and planned future drive-abouts in that area. :crap2:

I do miss the double-the-value coupon policy my local Giant store in DC area had. For the most part, I don't bother with coupons here. :shrug: With double value, it seemed worthwhile. I know it doesn't make sense, but . . .

I haven't personally bought at Dorothy Lane but I have been a frequent guest at the table of someone who does. Yummy deli stuff! NOTHING can beat Krogers. sigh. Publix does have good bakery things but kinda high. Their pies are frequently over ten dollars.

There are some things I used to buy in Texas that I cannot find here, but I can order them. I can order them from MyBrands.com. Maybe they will have what you like, too.

Publix house brand of ice cream and frozen yogurt is pretty darn good and it's still a true half gallon (unlike the 48-52 oz cartons of the 'national' brands). We buy the light variety... tiramisu, lemon cookie, mint cookies and cream.

I like their french baguettes in the bakery..only $1.19 ... cheapest around and pretty good.

We like sourdough bread for sandwiches.... they have a sourdough sliced round loaf in the bakery that is the best of the sourdough around...still not great, but passable.

For service deli meats, I prefer Sweetbay to Publix. SB has good quality and their deli prices are much better than publix. SB also makes a mean sub for a very reasonable price. Full Sub (probably16" long) for about $5.50 and half sub for about $3.50.

I do miss Trader Joes :-(

Coming from Texas, we missed Blue Bell ice cream when we moved to South Florida. We moved here and voila! Publix has it. So I'm happy.

The best sourdough bread I have found this side of San Francisco is Panera Bread. Their sourdough is the best!

I love this idea of exchanging great finds at local grocery stores so I am posting just so I can get the updates. LOL

Chicago rolls and chocolate frozen yogert at Mr. Publix along with their Italian white loaf of bread are good finds.
I'm waiting on a sale for the frozen yogert to stock up for hurricane season.
Its always a 'must eat' or it might melt if the elect. goes out for a while. :girlneener:

When we are up north we shop at Krogers....and it is really a nice store.

However, Publix has the friendliest staff ... bar none. I still can't believe how nice they all are and so willing to help us out.
Little bit more expensive...but they get my vote:eclipsee_gold_cup:

Moving from Pennsylvania initially I missed Giant food stores so much. I would kill for UTZ's potato chips! Now I have gotten use to Publix and I am satisfied. I love their Multi Grain bread. In fact all of their bakery items have been great. I usually buy Publix Greenwise chicken which has been good. My husband wishes I would purchase more Publix brand items, however I still find myself buying "brand names". I do enjoy buying special type items at Fresh Market. They have so many wonderful types of yogurt and I love that you can buy fresh nuts and dried fruit.

Since you know the area, you'll recognize most of these places. I had an eastern and western drive-about in that part of PA that I'd take on a lazy day in Northern VA. The western would go up US 15 with a stop in Thurmont, MD (near Camp David) for candy, especially colored hats and licorice. The on thru Gettysburg to Hanover and the Granny Utz factory. I'd get boxes of pretzels and especially chips to keep the office supplied. And since I was in Hanover, I'd visit Snyder's for their great variety of pretzels and pretzel parts. Plus the had a great selection of penny candy at a cheap price. If I had the time, I'd swing by the York Market for some great cheese. Then back down I-83 & home.

The eastern trip generally started with a stop at Utz's (all trips included Utz's) and then east to Lititz for the chocolate. Wilbur's Buds are the greatest chocolate treats in the world and put Hershey's Kisses to shame. Then it was on to Hi-way 340 and the Amish run. Mandatory stops were Bird in Hand and Intercourse. The cheeses, jellies, baked goods, and meats were sensational. The sausages and especially the pepper bacon were so much better than anything you could get in the DC area. And there was this little grocery on Hi-way 10 on the way home, easily missed, that had the most delicious apple pie --- I'm salivating now - I hope the Arts & Crafts show has funnel cake.

And all that relatively country driving, with a book on tape running, was so relaxing, so great once one left the DC area. Y'know, Lititz, PA does not run (or need) a traffic copter on Saturday afternoon!

oh, to stay on topics, I like Publix too, but I miss having Albertson as a change of pace.
