3G Update

The demise of 3G was a topic a while back. There is an article in today's WAPO with a lot of details. Bottom line - if you have a 3G device, you are screwed sometime in 2022 depending on your carrier

My life view, deal with what is, don't panic. I mentioned previously a friend with an Alpha Romeo that still has an 8 track tape player. If, I recall they came out with adapters that would allow you to play cassette tapes. As far as phones ATT gave us, for FREE a replacement phone. It is a cheap phone and you can buy it on line for like $80.

For cars etc I would expect solutions will be found. May not be correct but I believe Feb of 2022 is the target date. Far from a technonerd but the issue seems to be the towers.
Most of the rest of the world is using satellites most of which are paid for by the US.

*yawn* I'm more worried about my bowel movements and bourbon quantity I have on hand.

I doubt the cars will be updated, I have a 2012 car that the manufacturer (Ford) stopped support for the computer system 6 years ago, I am sure they will not offer an update for the cellular connectivity.

A couple items that were interesting. 1 - while the cellular part of 3G phones won't work, the Wi-Fi part should, unless we discover Apple and Samsung cut corners and tied them together somewhere. 2 - older Kindle e-books will not be able to download books. You will need to download onto a laptop and copy over to the Kindle from that.

Thanks for that mental image - old guy on the pot with a bourbon in one hand and tp in the other. Just don't mix them up! :)

Yes, that is what BMW told me - won't work and no work-around after the date next year. I don't use any of it, so don't really care.

Phone service in general around TV is so poor now, how will we know the difference?

Cellular protocols and Wi-Fi protocols have nothing to do with each other. Of course Wi-Fi will continue to work. You will be able to use your original iPhone (Edge network), your iPhone 3G, your iPhone 4 models, and your iPhone 5 models via Wi-Fi once the 3G networks are sunsetted.

No one is using satellites yet unless you want to spend $2,000 on a special phone. I don't know where some people get their information

Luggage 10-01-2021 05:16 AM

Many major carriers are offering free phones. And you'll be able to buy a phone if you don't have a major carrier at Walmart for something like 20 or $50. The phone connectivity in cars is not a safety issue unless you want to hit the emergency button but at this point I would say 99.99% of people and have expensive cars have a cell phone already

If you’re on a device with 3G you really need to upgrade anyway. Losing 3G is a non issue.

NoMo50 10-01-2021 06:31 AM

The humanity! How did any of us ever survive without a cell phone? Believe it or not, this is called progress. As new technologies come on line, older technologies become obsolete. Try getting Microsoft to support an older computer running Windows XP. What will you do when that 8 year old TV shoots craps? You get the idea. You adapt to the changes, roll with the punches, and life will go on.

My Dad has an iPhone 3 he uses for long distance phone calls only. No internet (he's 94 and is convinced the internet is magic). It took him a couple of years to get used to this phone (which buttons tompush to find the contact list). I'm concerned switching to a newer model will be beyond his ability to change
