Social media, Facebook, and IMHO

As the great philosopher, "Who-Flung-Poo" once said, or maybe it was my dad, "Opinions are like (fill in the blank), everyone has one", but most of the time they should be kept to oneself.

I've given up Facebook and the like, for sometime, because the "humble" in "my humble opinion" has been lost to toxic ramblings these days. If, what you say, doesn't give the listener, "a warm fuzzy", then what's the point! Oh by the way, this IS my humble opinion.

I second your opinion. I seem to remember the philosopher "Who-Flung-Poo" also commented "Sum Ding Wong" when it came to Facebook.

Trouble with Face Book is people take anything they read as the truth and they couldn't be farther from the facts.
But I suppose we can say the same for CNN or CBS etc.etc.

This has always been an issue. All have a bias and that has always been true. Facebook, frankly all of the huge monsters that we all deal with all have a bias.
What is spooky to me is they can use their computers to figure what will change your mind to their view without you even being able to see their influence.

My OPINION is all have bias. To say you don't, you are either lying to others or more important lying to yourself.

And, I can say the same thing about Fox, OAN, and Newsmax. What's your point. ALL BUSINESSES are in it to make money - FOX OAN and Newsmax are not exceptions. They will ALL say or do whatever it takes to maximize profits, period.

Facebook is just a medium to a larger audience than any of those, so it has more impact. It has a staff of Ph.D.'s which do studies only experimenting on their users to see what methods make for the most profit, and one of the studies found that anger is easier to generate and produces higher profits, so, they make sure users see things that make them mad. Just like CNN, MSNBC, Fox, OAN, Newsmax. It's all about money.

Oh, and have you stopped watching Fox, OAN or Newsmax, CNN, NBC, et all?

And they have performed testing that shows they can influence who goes out to vote in such a way as to influence the outcome of elections. And it turns out to not even be that hard. They simp[ly show ads saying, "get out to vote", and if they include profile photo's of your friends that have voted, you are significantly more likely to vote, if they do NOT include the profile photos you are less likely to vote. So, they can show photos to people that will vote the way they want, and not show photos to people that they don't want to vote.

It works. They have the numbers to prove it.

Yes I have a long time ago including Face Book.

I might scan my computer browser from time to time.
Even then I roll my eyes on subjects on them

People should use their own minds for critical thinking about whatever is on what information resource.

Some sources are a lot more slanted than others. And on Facebook whom you have as friends can make a huge difference. Most of my Facebook friends have the same opinions as I do if not I usually just ignore the person or unfriend them.

I also use the Ignore feature a lot on Talk of the Villages. No sense giving myself more indigestion.

I'm flummoxed about people hating Face Book. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to "manage" Face Book--deleting all ads (there's a "never see this ad again," and/or "delete all ads from this vendor") never open any news feeds, unfollow any friends who post too many (or any, for that matter) political opinions, whether I agree with them or not. Consequently I never get any political commercials or directed statements from any friends. Instead I get pictures and posts from friends and family that help me keep up with their lives. A long-time Michigan friend just went through a year-long battle with cancer. Her daughter started a FB group, "Updates on Mom," that kept us all in the loop. My friend was too sick to even be online. Without Face Book, we all would have been in the dark about her.
I've gotten nothing but good out of Face Book after teaching it years ago what I wouldn't respond to.

Just like when tobacco companies were eventually forced to reveal their own, detailed scientific data, I think the biggest and most concerning part is how addictive social media really is. While the focus is currently on younger, still developing brains, a whole lot of us older people are affected the same way. Dopamine hits, are dopamine hits - regardless of the age.

We all have "comfort zones" but it's important to RESEARCH before REPEATING.

I’m not on Facebook or any of the other sites except WhatsApp that I use to talk to many friends around the world , but I love newspapers I subscribe to the South China Morning Post , the Guardian, Daily Telegraph, Jerusalem Post , Boston Globe and the New York Times and for sports the Athletic and no I don’t read every word of all of them but it gives me a really good understanding of the world we live in and a world I spent so much time in ,although pretty useless here because if it wasn’t on the internet or not my kind of story it’s fake news , you see I look at the world through a grey lens , here it’s all black in white and yes I still get the daily Sun
