I have a question regarding filling up a gas tank and hope someone can explain the reason for the problem. I stopped at WaWa on 301/466 to fill up my gas tank. I was using a Gas Card. I placed the hose into the car and proceeded to fill the car up. The card usage continued to show the amount as it rang up the sale. As the card appeared to be reaching "full" it locked up the hose and completely shut down to the point you could not even try to add another once of gas. I drove away thinking I had filled the tank which should have meant I had about 400 miles to go. At about 100 miles which I already had in the tank when I first drove in the indicator on the dash board showed I had 70 miles left and I just made it to another gas station and filled it up again and it is fine now. My first guess is that while I was pumping the gas the gas station tank was empty and pumping air and running up the costs? The car was in the garage before I used it next so no one could have taken gas out! I went back to WaWa a few days later to see if they could shed some light on the reason and they could have cared less. I got a "that's interesting" ! Does anyone have any ideas how something like this can happen? Please no smart a%$ responses?

Maybe you can explain how a gas card works. I don't understand how it could possibly know how much gas is in your tank and when it is full.

If there is no gas being pumped, the meter won't run...If the meter was running, you got gas...it won't pump air..

Most likely your gas card (assuming it is not a credit card) used up the available funds on the card. I have experienced this with gasoline gift cards. You can usually reload the card or purchase a new one.

Did you choose the right gas grade?
 

WaWa has multiple choices of Gas at very different prices including, I believe, a non-ethanol choice. The first time I went there I had to look closely to be sure I was chose the right one. If you chose the wrong grade you may have been paying more per gallon than you thought thus you got less gas than you expected. Did you get a receipt? That would show you how many gallons you bought, the price per gallon, total paid and remaining balance on the gas card.

Did your dashboard actually show a full tank when you drove away or did you assume that it was full because that's what you were expecting?

Gas cards measure $ amounts left on the card. Has nothing to do with how much gas is in the tank.

You could be using a gas card to fill extra gas cans....

Pump stops running? Gas card $ used up!

There is a lot of missing information. "A gas card," we get what may be called a gift card from our credit card sand purchased from Publix. They have fixed balance. With such a card, you may not have enough remaining on the card to purchase much gas. A credit card, perhaps you've exceeded your credit limit. The post does not say what your fuel gauge showed.

As far as they couldn't care less. I don't think that is fair. What would you expect them to do?

Like anything else your fuel gauge can fail.

Suggestion to all, it is not a good idea to run your tank all the way down. You can pick up dirt from in the tank.

A non-ethanol choice. Due to laws, you are not supposed to use that in your car.

Seems fishy to me. Payment to Credit Card is posted when you stop pumping. By inserting gas card it registers as a good credit card and allows pump to turn on to start fueling.
My vehicle takes between $20-$30 each fill up, I reset my trip odometer and estimated distance to empty.

Like a lot of people have indicated, the problem is probably due to the amount on the gas card. Let me explain. I've gotten a $50 "gift card" for Shell gas and the first time I used it to fill up, everything worked fine. The second time I used it, the pump stopped during the fill up and it wouldn't dispense anymore. When I thought about it, I realized that I had used up all the money on the gift card so the pump stopped. It wouldn't let me continue because I could have easily driven off with unpaid gas if it had continued pumping. I had to insert my credit card and start as a new transaction to continue my fill up. I highly suspect that is what happened to you. And if you think about it, it isn't Wawa's fault. It is theft prevention.

As said, if gift card it will go to limit. Then you need to put hose back and select another payment to continue, a totally different transaction. When filling my truck, this happens using a credit card as many pumps shut off at $75 and I then have to start again if I want it full.

What law do you mean?
 

Just curious what law are you talking about that says you are not supposed to use non-ethanol gas in your car? I don't use it, just noticed it was a choice along with the other grades of gas offered at different prices.

Also, as gas get’s expensive, gas stations may max the amount of gas (dollar amount) you can purchase, usually $75 or $100

Maybe, depending on the state (CA), but 100% gas is perfect for many boats, supercharged jet skis, and highly tuned golf carts and other small engines.

I only have the $50 gas cards that Publix sells at a discount

now that the price of gas is over $3/gallon I often am using more than one gas card to fill up....

when the first card runs out of money everything comes to a halt. I replace the nozzle, what for the screen to reset and slide in another gas card and finish filling up
