Home-Owners Insurance

Can anyone recommend a reasonable Home-Owners Insurance Company? I was with Tower Hill but now I notice they are requesting this year that we (1) in addition to paying our bill "contribute" money to the company in a separate account (2) give "power of attorney" to some financial issue of the company. I have never heard of either of these with any other companies and I can't imagine granting some company power of attorney over any aspect of my life.

I have Progressive with The Villages Insurance. Very reasonable so far.

something fishy

I was with Tower Hill also. I received a letter from them in June, indicating they are pulling their homeowners insurance out of Florida at the end of December this year. I had to find another insurance company. The company I went with in September indicated that i should sign up right away, because their company is rationing the number of homeowners policies they can write to 600 for their agency.

I would call Tower directly and see if is legitimate.

Why bother with a company acting like they are doing you a favor? Get other bids. Start with Progressive

I just left Progressive thru the Villages Insurance after many years. No claims ever. My 16 YO 2000 Sq Ft home home went from $1700 in 2019, $2400 in 2020, $2700 in 2021, to over $4000 this year. Couldn't even get to talk with a Village Insurance rep unless I agreed to an appointment a week out. Cut the cord and went to Allstate. Couldn't get State Farm to quote (House roof over 15 years old). Kim wanted to cover with prorated coverage based upon roof age. Travelers not accepting new customers, etc. I was told rates higher due to roof replacements paid out and now higher since my roof over 15 years. Already got to pay for other customers roof but now have to pay for theirs and mine. What a deal.

Does it help get a better rate if you have a home and a rental?

justjim 11-24-2022 09:39 AM

The two hurricanes this year will not help insurance rates in Florida. The Governor has called a special legislative session to discuss insurance issues. I think 12 is the number of companies who are already pulling out of Florida. It’s a major problem if you live near the coast. Look for higher rates when you get your next homeowners bill. We are currently with Travelers through Villages Insurance.

I would say no from my experience.

Reasonable in Florida(especially on the coasts) is not in the dictionary. We received the same letter from Tower Hill and opted to stay with them. A lot of posters have said that they can get policies from other companies without problems. Not true for us and good for them. Suggest talking to the agent and have them explain what they asked you to sign. At this stage, be happy that you have not had a premium increase in the 2-3X range. We will all pay for the damages in the Fort Myers area.

Reasonable in Florida started to end in the coastal area of Florida after hurricane Andew in 1992. There are very few actual nationwide insurance companies in Florida.

Problem is, that’s all they do is discuss…………maybe some significant action would help.

Why would they request this if their pulling out of Florida?
We used them for years but last year they went from 1,200 to 1,900:no claims ,went with Farmers .last January. Same coverage was 1,050 this year it will be 1,260 dir to the hurricanes went up 18%.which is fine .everyone will be paying more when its time to renew

My first thought is that this must be a scam, from someone else, NOT Tower Hill.

Regarding the home insurance situation, I’ve been looking at other insurance for our home and getting ridiculous supposedly competitive quotes of over $10,000. And I am right here, NOT in the coast. I was also told that some insurance companies have already reached their quota for Lake/Sumter counties and they’ll try again in January and see if something has changed. The insurance situation in Florida has truly gone crazy.

We tried to get a quote from Progressive in September, they are not writing any new policies in Florida, at least at that time.

Call Farmers Insurance for a quote , not State Farm , Farmers
