Traffic laws regarding golf carts
 

My friend is renting a villa, (which comes with a golf cart,) located right off Morse Blvd. , (Del A Vista South.) Going to Chula Vista Rec. center in the cart is easy, as she makes a right onto Morse and a right onto Rio Grande. But coming back she would have to make a LEFT turn from Morse to get back into her villa. Since Morse Blvd. is 35 mph, I do not think that would be legal in a golf cart, unless the cart is street legal. Is this correct? And if I am correct, what would be the best way to re-enter her villa, as she will be going South on Morse? I thank anyone in advance for their help in this matter.

North of 466, a cart does NOT need to be street legal to be on Morse. There is a specific cart lane on the right border of each lane (northbound and south bound).

One travels in the cart lane, and when one wishes to make a left turn, checks behind for a break in traffic. Signals left to change lanes from the cart lane to the main lane, and then proceeds as if in a car. Keep the left turn signal on, use the left arm to signal as well to increase visibility, and when oncoming traffic, and the traffic light allow, makes the left turn.

It probably would be a good idea for you and your friend to drive a car, or walk up to the light at Rio Grande or San Marino and observe the traffic to see how it's done.
Generally, automobile traffic is very observant and mindful of carts in that area.

Trickier is the route to cross 466 to get south on the Morse Blvd. cart trail. I won't try to explain that here. If you know someone who knows how to that, have them lead you and your friend on a trip down. Or, if you like, I will try to explain it on a separate post.

morse blvd from the round about at el camino real to 466 is the most unsafe strectch of golf cart travel in TV's ... it's an accident waiting to happen..

True. Another word is "common sense".

But, for some, that is oxymoronic. Twice now, at the same intersection (turning into the road that goes to the El Diablo/El Santiago golf courses, I've seen carts signal for a left turn while in the golf cart lane, then turn FROM the lane across traffic into the golf course road. The first time the cart driver (woman) stopped in the golf cart lane to let oncoming traffic pass on by, then immediately turned. We were behind her in our car by maybe 30 yards or so and had slowed down because it didn't look right. However if a car was going at normal speed through there it could have been a serious accident: she'd have been hit on the driver's side.

Same thing happened a couple of weeks later. However no car was coming behind the cart making the left turn and oncoming traffic was quite a ways away, so no danger.

Yes, as stated before, she will have to cross Morse to get back. Very dangerous. There have been MANY serious accidents on Morse.
I live in that area and would be glad to show your friend how it should be done.

she has to stay in the cart lane provide until she makes a turn off of morse. Giving people faulty info or partial info is always a terrible idea.

Agreed. The speed limit is 30mph but many go much faster, so be aware that traffic might be coming up on you from behind more quickly than expected.

An alternative would be to turn right off Morse onto a residential street, do a "U" turn and wait to head straight across Morse when all lanes are clear. This assumes, of course, that your friend's street has a street directly opposite it.

A friend of mine being new here drive south on Morse missed the turnoff for lake Sumter and proceeded directly over the bridge. On other side he yanked the cart off the road

WRONG! Carts have to move over BEFORE their turn so they CAN make their turn wilthout endangering their... or your life.

Well said. Left turns in golf carts on Morse north of 466 in that area are among the most dangerous turns in The Villages and require great care and fast reflexes. And, ideally, seatbelts.

Golf cart safety clinic is Dec 21 at 9am at Colony Cottage rec center. ALL should and can attend. It's free and very important for ANYONE who drives a golf cart. Rules and regulations will be topics that will be covered.

I don't understand anyone who thinks making a left turn from the golf cart lane is safe or legal or who told them to. :22yikes:

You mean “Faulty” information like THIS?

Do they still run them? I'm curious because on another note it's apparent no one attends the good golf class on golf courtesy anymore!:smiley:
