comparison between I75 and 301 south

Has anyone done a comparison for the length of time it takes to get to the south end of the Villages(466a) from north of Jacksonville heading south.

I usually take A1A to 301 and then head south to the villages. Last year coming home I went over to I 75 at wildwood and north to 10 and then up to 95. I realize it is quite a few miles further but it is such an easier drive and more relaxing but has anyone done a comparison time wise.

I know there are ways to cut across at Ocala etc but since I hate the speed changes and lights etc through the small towns I was wondering if there was much of a difference time wise between going down 301 or across 10 to 75 and then down to Wildwood.

Tbugs 12-10-2010 09:10 PM

Huh?

Why the heck would I time the difference between going on 301 or I-75? I am in The Villages - full time - like any sane person should be.

If I go anywhere, like I do on a frequent basis, I head to either the East Coast for a daytrip or the West Coast on a daytrip.

90 minutes in either direction and I am on a coast and a beach.

Do yourself a favor - retire permanently to The Villages. Do not call it TV - that means television or in Newton Minnow's language, "a vast wasteland".

Our son and his family live in St. Augustine and we head up to their home quite a bit. They are close to the county line and live fairly close to Jacksonville. On our first trip up from TV we took I-95....took us almost 3 hours. Now we drive through the Ocala National Forest...a number of different routes, sort of zig zagging through the area, and it takes us about 2 hours. Not exactly the way you're talking about, but we found it interesting that back roads cut so much time off of our trip. We avoid driving through Ocala going that way. You really have to obey posted speed limits, they vary from 35 to 60mph, but it's a pleasant drive.

I have been using the I 10/US 301 route for many years (long before I even heard of The Villages) to reach Tampa and points SW. I have never used the I 10/I 75 route so I have no idea how long that route takes. However, I know how long the 301 route takes. From the intersection of US 301 and CR 42 it is 1:50 to the intersection of US 301 and I 10. By passing or passing through Ocala makes little difference time wise.

Did you time the I10/I75 route? If so let us know.

Some object to the drive on 301. I don't although I have noticed an increase in traffic on 301.

Listen to the wind. Stay on I 75

I have lived in TV for a few years now. I believe I have earned the right to call it anything I want.

Using Googlemaps:

301/42 to 301/I-10 using 301: 97 Miles; 1:58 (49 MPH Avg)

301/42 to 301/I-10 using I-75 to I-10 to 301: 163 miles; 2:45 (60 MPH Avg)

Also: Lakeport, CA to TV using I-10: 2959 Miles; 42:54 (69 MPH Avg) @ 8 hrs per day = 5 days

Towing a 21 ft camper trailer: 50 Hrs (60 MPH Avg) @ 8 hrs per day = 6 days

Towing a 21 ft camper trailer with wife in shotgun: 60 Hrs (50 MPH Avg) @ 6 hrs per day = 10 days

"................................................. .....

Unfortunately, not everyone has the option to live in TV full time. Brits and Canadians for example.

Try exit 268 off 95 at Ormond Beach(Daytona) Fl40-Fl19-Fl42--voila the Villages. Saw this on TOTV and tried it coming and going from Richmond area. Best route that I have found and I have tried most all.

You left out one option. Towing a camper with wife in shotgun position loaded with old fashioned maps, and your GPS on dash - 70 hrs. Still 50 MPH average but extra time needed to backtrack. If you follow the GPS that will be wrong, if you follow the wife's directions from the maps they will be wrong. Either way you have to allow for 10 hours of backtracking. If you don't follow either the GPS or wife's directions you still have to backtrack because you refused to stop and ask for directions.

We're leaving in a few days for CA. Bogeyboy (the real BogeyBoy has 4 legs and weights 16 lbs) will add another 10 hours for "Do you think Bogey needs to make a stop?" stops. That's when I get my nap.

Calm down Tbugs, relax. You seem way too stressed. TV is a great place to unwind.
Douga had a valid question and deserves a respectful answer. There was nothing in the original question which would imply insanity.
TV is a common abbreviation for The Villages. That shouldn't be too hard for a sane person such as yourself to figure out.

Best route we've found also. Now we always use the 95/40/19/42 route when coming to TV. We love it. It's a pretty drive, and relaxing.

For those in a hurry, perhaps you can shave off a few minutes by zooming over to 301 or I75.

Oh my! Someone is having a bad day. A nice legitimate question and an impolite reply. Hope the rest of your day goes better!

Your route is a very nice drive.

Using 301 from I-10 to CR 42 is about 30 miles shorter according to Yahoo Maps.

(we come in from the West and this isn't an issue)

Thanks for all the replies. When I first read TBugs reply I took it as 'tongue in cheek' but then upon second reading was not too sure what he was implying. I could not find anywhere in the post that I referred to The Villages as TV so thought maybe it was his standard signature but then realized that signatures tend to be separated by a line from the post. As far as being 'sane' well I will not dignify that with a response.

Thanks to Chuckinca for the google map information. My last trip from The Villages via 301 to a1a to 95 took 2 hours and 35 minutes. It was early in the morning so traffic was light. Google's average speed was 49 MPH, does that seem high to anyone due to all the speed changes and lights etc.

The trip back on 75 to 10 to 95 was again early in the morning but unfortunately I did not time it. It was such an easy drive that I was considering that option going south this time but really was wondering if anyone had gone that route and had timed how long it took. Many more miles that way but no stopping and higher speed limits.

Again, thanks to all who have replied.
