There's something wrong with this whole story.

Mary Lou Retton is supposedly worth $8M-$10M. She lives in a 9000 sq ft home she apparently owns, in Texas. As recently as last week, her commercials for Colonial Penn Life Insurance were running on the air.

The Fundraising site her daughter has set up on Spotfund, had an original goal of $50,000. You can barely get a hangnail treated at a hospital for $50K. Where did they come up with that number? The site has now raised over $250,000.

Makes one kind of wonder why would someone would forgo health insurance as an athlete, or a previous athlete, who is aware of injuries and the impact injuries can inflict. unless they still feel immortal.

kind of makes the case for health insurance, even when you think you don't need it. insurance is one of those services that you don't need until you need it. . the result of everything works until it doesn't. . . iykyk

I hope she pulls through and recovers. Losing young people, under 70, really sux. I wonder what kind of germ it is. . . one i would want to stay away from, whatever it is.

If she owns an expensive house debt free, asking people for money is outrageous. The hospital can just put a lien on the house to cover the bills.

I agree. Something is suspicious about this. The medical bills can be paid after she is released from the hospital. Why does the daughter need funds immediately?

This looks legit. It is kind of hard to dupe people especially if they are paying close attention to the facts.

I don't know, but there is no Federal penalty for not having health insurance.

I believe she is ill and in the hospital. It is suspicious that her daughter is collecting money for her when the hospital bills can be paid when Mary Lou is released. There is no immediate need for money at this point. Does Mary Lou really need the money? I am skeptical that a woman living in a 9000 sq ft home does not have funds.
