Mentors and Tutors Needed for Middle School

I volunteer at a local middle school. We are in dire need of individuals who may know a little spanish to either mentor (one day a week, 45 minutes) or tutor spanish speaking students in math and conversational english.
Unfortunately the school lacks the resources to help these students.

Please only respond if you're interested and please refrain from negative comments.

Thank you

The school district has a page where they post volunteer info, and there's nothing on that page with any information at all, other than a link to a volunteer application. Nothing listing what kinds of volunteers they need, or even which schools need volunteers. That's pretty sad.

But at least they can fill out the app linked from the above webpage, if they're interested.

Spanish language proficiency is required?

I won’t be down until December, but I may be interested if tutors are still needed at that time. While I studied in Spain for a summer in college and became fairly fluent, I have lost much of what I knew due to lack of use. You don’t want me for math, but I was an undergrad English major and at one time directed a university communication skills center. I was a family law attorney for 20+ years doing a significant amount of guardian ad litem work for abused, neglected and dependent children. Please let me know if the later timeframe would work.

information for tutoring is available via tutors for kids, inc
and for mentoring thru wildwoodwildcatsboosterclub.com

It should trouble all of us that a public school, per the OP doesn't have the resources to educate. Federal law requires, not optional, all students to receive instruction even if their primary home language is not English. This is ESL, English as secondary language, teaching. The goal is both to teach English while also providing basic educational skills in their home language while English is being learned.

Apparently Wildwood Middle School finds the resources for a full 13 sports not required athletic program. I support the availability of sports in the schools, but the first priority should be education.

That's why I find it pretty sad, that the school system can't be bothered to post on their OWN website that they need specific volunteers.

And - I don't know how people who can't speak Spanish fluently, are going to tutor kids who only speak Spanish. This is just significantly sad and pathetic. If you're going to teach kids English, you NEED to understand THEM.

I’m interested.

What is the investment of time.
is it one on one or small groups
What is the age range?
What are the main subjects they need tutors in?
What is the teachers role?
Is there a classroom or are we talking library/cafeteria?

VOLUNTEER | Wildwood Boosters

Is the main page where you can find information.

"Curlytop" our member, is in charge of the Academics team of volunteers.

The program works in conjunction with Tutors for Kids ( tutors4kids.org )

I'm not a tutor, I'm not affiliated in any way with this stuff, but I checked it out because there is just SO much information missing from curlytop's requests. She's legit.
