electric lawn mower
I'm looking into an electric lawn mower. Any suggestions? How many years does the battery usually last? Is it better than a gas mower?
|
Well, if you want electric it will last for however long the cord lasts before you run over it. If you get a battery, I think they are good for 5-10 years. I got an Ego battery powered mower and love it. Better than gas, IMO. I think if you search there are some past posts about battery mowers.

EGO or STIHL , buy anything else and you will regret your decision...these are also so quiet, you can cut early in the am hours..Thank you for going green

Another vote for Ego. There are two top-rated models in 2025. Get the one with the two 6Ah batteries vs. the one with one 10Ah battery.
It’s always been to have more batteries and read how to care form them: only charge right before using, store in less than 85 degrees (ie not garage), don’t drrain to zero if possible. Your best best around TV for price is Lowe’s (Home Depot’s carry a lesser line) and you get a military discount and Lowe’s credit. Also, look for deals on a trimmer (would avoid the one that auto feeds / LineIQ), blower, and edger. I got the commercial edger which is probably overkill but they don’t make a residential one and the multi tool is heavy with the battery. Go to Lowe’s and try each for yourself. |

I’d used EGO equipment/batteries for maybe 8 years, never had one last over 5 years. Mower batteries (5al. 7al, 9al) are close to 500 dollars. Can get Chinese knockoffs for 1/2 that price. Batteries can be repaired by replacing bad batteries cells if you have good cells from old batteries the equipment and knowledge.
Least expensive at noted are cord mowers, but you have to deal with cord. Gas mowers require more pre-maintenance due to alcohol in fuel, oil changes. If you can live with replacing batteries every few years EGO good choice for price. |
I first bought an EGO mower battery-operated in 2016, sold it to my next-door neighbor, and then bought a new EGO mower with self-propel in 2020. Both batteries are still the originals. I also have the weed eater and blower, love these products, and highly recommend EGO.

[QUOTE=Xaribe;2443365]Husqvarna makes several robot lawn mowers. They appear to operate much like the little floor cleaner ones, some are more expensive then others but are available on Amazon or at a Lowe's. The down side is you may have to train it.

Strange that a lawn mower needs to be stored in less than 85 degrees. Do you store it in the air-conditioned house?

Absolutely love mt EGO battery powered lawn mower. I get four to five mowings in this tough St Augustine grass. Make sure you get one with the mulching blade so you don’t need to bag the clippings.

I am using the 21 inch, self propelled Greenworks 80 volt on a hilly lot. Had it for a year and no problems. I store the batteries in the house. I keep St Augustine around 3.5 inches. Tough springy grass.
