Comcast/xfinity cost

Just looked at my account on the Comcast/Xfinity web site. Noticed, as of next month, my internet charge will go up $12.00 per month. I have not received any advanced notification from Comcast about the price increase.

CenturyLink is laying the Quantum fiber on our street. For those who are using Quantum fiber, what are your good or bad thoughts about its reliability and cost for internet only and internet plus TV?

Quantum fiber or any fiber service is the best since the download and upload speeds are the same, $50/ month, no tax, no fees, all equipment included. Not a promotion so you lock in your price. The only thing is you will have to stream since they only provide internet and no TV service. When you’re ready reach out to me and I can help you get signed up and switch the streaming and set everything up for free if you like thanks, John. 914-419-9398

I switched from Xfinity to Xfinity Now in February and all working well, for $30 per month.

It can be put on hold whenever you like, although you still pay for the whole of the current month.

Quantum now also has a slower speed for $40 and I was told Spectrum is going to start offering their slowest speed at 20/month all in.

Your first statement makes no sense to me because I rarely do any uploading. Why should I care about the upload speed? Most people only want a high download speed for streaming. Am I missing something?

You are correct traditionally download speed was only important but
Upload speed is more important these days for people with cameras. Unless you have a local server the camera uploads the video to a cloud server then back done to your device. With slow cable upload speeds sending a higher resolution video from a doorbell camera or security cameras works but is very slow. Also, if you backup your PC for
Example, that initial full backup and any other subsequent full backups will be very painful with slow upload speeds. Cable doesn’t offer the same upload and download speeds because the cable itself is limited so they use most of the bandwidth for download and a small amount for upload. Fiber doesn’t have this limitation.

Quantum fiber, $50.00 per month. YouTube TV, about $90.00 per month. Never had streaming lagging, channel selection almost the same as Xfinity, but unlimited DVR is included.

Isn’t Quantum taking over Centurylink??

Here's a question: If your home was "wired" by Centurylink and you even previously had Centurylink cable for years, what is involved in bringing Quantum fiberoptic to your home?

If you have fiber in your neighborhood, it will take about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs to set up quantum service. We have had quantum fiber for over a yr w/out one interruption. Very pleased with the service.

Good point!

Quantum is owned by Lumen who bought CenturyLink's fiber business. This fiber business is now being bought by AT&T sometime in 2026.

The difference is with Quantum and YouTube TV for example, your pricing will remain relatively stable vs with Cable, you will always be getting a price increase after the initial promotion.

OP, do you have a 12 month contract for Internet service that will end this month? If so, this could be the reason for the price increase. Xfinity will not notify you when your contract ends, but they will automatically switch you from the contract rate to a month-to-month rate. You can check your contract on the Xfinity website, and if it is ending, you can set up a new contract.

Also, if you have Xfinity Mobile cell phone service, changing your Internet provider could cause you to lose your cell phone service.

Centurylink service has been available at my home from the beginning, but there is a control box for the neighborhood where service is enabled for each house. I once lost my service because a tech accidently stopped my service at the neighborhood box.
