Homeowner's Insurance

Just received my ASI Homeowner's Policy for 2012. The " Hurricane Premium" portion went up 17% and the "Non-Hurricane Premium" portion went up 32% from last year:mad:. No changes in home or claims filed. Has anyone else experienced such an increase? (When I get an explanation from the agent, I will post it.) Thanks.

My ASI Homeowners policy took pretty much the same hike. I emailed the agent and asked her to take a look around for a policy with the same or better coverage. She got back to me saying that she didn't have another company who would provide the sink-hole coverage like what is included with ASI. She did give me a quote without the sink-hole coverage with another company and it was less than the previous 2011 premium with ASI. I really don't think I should not have the sinkhole coverage. I guess I'll be looking with other agencies. I have heard nothing but good things about ASI, especially when the tornado hit south of 466 in 2007. I hate when they pull this crap! Even with the increase it is far cheaper than I was paying up north 12 years ago on a comparably priced home. Don't they know I have better things to do than look for insurance. I have priorities you know!

My ASI policy went up significantly last August. They had a rate hike in about April (?) of last year....you apparently got last years renewal under the old rates and are now catching up to the rest of us. My total premium increase was somewhere around 25%...if they have a similar large increase again this year,it'll be time to start shopping.

We were told by our insurance agent months ago that our insurance would go up because of the increase in sink hole payouts. If you have heard only good things about ASI why are you wasting time trying to find an agency that may cost a little less up front and risk having a good plan that you know will pay? Even with the increase, isn't it about $300 more? We all waste that much pretty quickly. I bet you don't blink at a $50 dinner check and insurance is much more important. It is about a dollar a day increase. Is that really worth your time and effort to find an inferior plan?

I agree but It would be nice if any of these agencies realized that a lot of people in the villages are on a fixed income and coming up with additional funds could be difficult.

OK, for budget purposes, a fully insured designer house with say a $1000 deductable. + or - $1,500?

Less than $750 per year with $500 deductible. That includes hurricane and sink hole but not flood.

$1000 deductible..you will find alot of policies with a minumun of 2% wind (Hurricane) damage and that would be anywhere from $4000-5000 deductible. I have seen Sinkhole coverage with 10% deductibles..and in the furture that may become more of the standard.....and these deductibles do not necessarily bring lower (expected) costs!

WE all should have Sinkhole coverage and hopefully never use it so the high deductible would not impact us BUT we all need wind or Hurricane coverage......that one is only a matter of time.

Its not the agencies.......its the state that approved the increases. There will be more to come in the near future.

I do blink. If you do nothing, not even inquire, how are they to know what the market will bear? I don't take a 32% overall increase sitting down. I think enough of ASI to keep them if I can't find equal or better coverage with another A+ or A++ company. Apathy is a terrible practice! I always like to be kissed when I get ... ... ... made love to. See how I cleaned that up!

I live in Li NY and I pay 2500 a year, so around $750 sounds really good to me. I would think if you had a higher deductible it might even be less.:icon_wink:

How about the one with the best reputation? ASI is the one.

We were hit by "the tornado" and were covered by ASI. They had an adjustor here within 24 hours. Because of the number of claims that resulted from the tornado, ASI hired private adjustors to augment their own staff. He looked at all we showed him and then showed me some things that I had not seen (glass fragments in my kitchen cabinets, scratches on my sliding glass doors, and some cracked tiles in the shower). We had done a lot of the clean up ourselves and had purchased a wet vac, large paper trash bags, and all sorts of cleaning equipment. He asked us for the receipts and asked us to estimate how many hours it had taken us to do it. We gave him all the needed info. Two days later we received a call from the him asking us to come to the Villages insurance office. We went, thinking that he needed more info. When we arrived, he had a check for $8,000.00 to "get us started." Included in the check was the money for all of our cleanup supplies, plus an hourly fee for doing it ourselves. All in all, we felt very good about all of the care that we received from ASI, including their sending him out again when we found some other problems that neither he or us noticed at first.
Just a note, some of our neighbors had terrible times with other insurance companies, including one who had the adjustor agree to replacing his whole roof as the house was less than 6 months old and the damage was to almost 50% of his roof. Two weeks later, he received a notice from his insurance that the adjustor no longer worked for them and that they would not be replacing his whole roof, but only the 50% that had been damaged and that they were negating other decisions that he had made. This went on for 10 months. Another neighbor had a mechanic's lien placed on his house because his insurance decided after the fact that they would not pay for his gutter repairs because he added them after buying the house!
