The villages phone book

Wouldn't it be nice if The Villages could reverse all the names in the phone book by states. Seems to me in this computer age, (of course I don't know how!! hehe) that if they could hit a button, and all the names would come out in alphebetical order by the state they came from. That would be nice to know, I think? Agree??:mmmm:

phone books are a

thing of the past almost....I rarely go to book, rather go to computer, faster, easier to read, etc.

That would be great as long as it's computerized and not killing any more trees. Maybe we could have our own social network like they do a universities. Each resident can enter all the information they want to share.

I remember another post a few months ago with the same issues. Yes, it would be nice to have a listing by state. Maybe an electronic index would be easier on the environment.

I agree. When we received our phone book for TV, I looked up my own last name, my maiden name, family and friends last names, etc. I told my husband that I wish the book was divided alphabetically and by states.

The Villages Phone Book should be a completely search-able database available to Village Residents only. How convenient to be able to print out the names and selected information of the people who live on your street. There would be endless possibilities. Christmas card labels or email addresses for electronic cards could be possible just by marking the specific ones that you want. It should be password accessible - probably using the golf password. Each resident could enter, alter or delete their own information at will.

I really can't believe that anyone would rather kill all of those trees especially since many of us would quickly opt for the electronic phone book.

It all has to do with how the information sorted. The phone book is probably computerized by the publisher. If enough people contact the publisher and mention the idea of sorting by "state of origin," maybe they'll consider it.

I request this every year on The Villages survey. Need something like Facebook for villagers only.

I can just hear the uproar when the phone companies start asking customers for their state of origin before they install a phone in a home.
:ohdear:
Be careful what you wish for.

The phone company is not the source of the resident's "home town and state" listed with their name and phone in the TV phone book.

The Villages had us fill out a form at our closing or when we got our Resident ID cards made, that was for our listing in the phone book. We have the option to be listed or not, and they list the home town and state if a resident is listed, and then the phone number........which is a lot of residents' cell phone number because they choose not to get a land line in the home here.

Sorting the listings by state in an added section of the phone book is an excellent idea. They could reduce the type size to save pages.

I use internet more than the phone book to get numbers, but the purpose of the TV phone book is different here. Reading the home city/town and state of residents helps buyers and newcomers to know that people with whom they have "home" in common like it enough to buy here. It's reassuring to know you're in good company when making the decision to buy here.

.

I have problems with having a cell phone number listed, since air time is paid by YOU in both directions. I would not want my cell number to be public knowledge. Of course, if you have an "unlimited" plan, you're OK, but still .....

Ah! Thank you, that certainly makes all the difference.
Bad assumption on my part.

For those TOTV users who don't actually live here or haven't visited, The Villages Phone Book is provided by the Developer. As far as I know, the phone company isn't involved in putting it together or printing it. "ilovetv" gave a pretty good summary of how it comes together above.

God knows we get plenty of the other phone books that are provided by the phone companies and anyone else that's out there to make a buck. My guess would be that I've gotten at least 6 other phone books besides The Villages Phone Book. They make great door stops and anchors for your boat.

You have the option of what phone number you want listed in TV phonebook, or if you want to be listed at all. Since we only have cells here, we weren't sure if we wanted to be listed or not. We worried we might get telemarketing calls on our cell. But so far that hasn't happened.

That's another very important issue with me.
