Popcorn ceiling removal

Does anyone know who removes popcorn ceiling, and if you had it done, how bad is the mess?

Sometimes the binding agent in popcorn ceilings contain asbestos...so care should be taken. Depending on how edgy your design sense is - there is a very interesting episode of the "Antonio Treatment" where the ceiling is sprayed with a colored metalflake paint and it looked very cool. Of course, one person's "cool" is another person's "terrible."

Just wondering if you think in today's day and age they would be still using asbestos ????? I dont want to worry about my ceiling being applied with an asbestos binding agent. Do you know if this process has be used in the last ten years ??

FWIW.............

From Could Your Popcorn Ceiling Contain Asbestos? :

"When was asbestos banned for use in popcorn ceilings?

Many people believe that asbestos was banned from use in popcorn ceiling texture in the 1970s. In fact, the manufacturing of popcorn ceiling asbestos texture was banned in 1978, but it was still legal to install it. Installation of asbestos ceiling texture was not banned because of the financial loss it would have meant for manufacturers, suppliers and contractors who had already purchased stock of the product. Asbestos ceiling texture was still being installed in homes through the 1980s when the product stocks finally ran out.

I have no idea...but, I think it's worth doing research and asking questions before anyone started to scrap anything. I don't mean to make you overly concerned...I was surprised when I read the info...still, asbestos is not the stuff you want to make assumptions about. Again, my apologies if I am raising unnecessary concerns.

The biggest problem is working over head, neck and arms fatigue. You would need a tall ladder, a Shop Vac with extra hose. Then make a funnel out of cardboard and duct tape. Attach to Shop Vac hose and use a wide scrapper knife (like used to apply spackel finish on drywall seams). Scrape popcorn off while holding makeshift funnel under the popcorn. The more time you take the less mess. Then just paint the ceilings with a good interior paint. The ceiling will suck a lot of paint but will look just fine afterwards. We had it done up north by friends who are pro painters. They call the finish a "knock off" and looks good.
Have the POPCORN delivered to BILL'S HOUSE. He needs some extra every once in a while.
