Default Popcorn ceiling ?

We are closing in December on a Villages home built in 1996. We are going to replace all the floor coverings, paint and may remove the popcorn ceilings.

We have popcorn ceiling in our home in TV now, built in 2000. I do not mind the popcorn and in talking to someone about removing the popcorn said there were different qualities of popcorn-some were more hardened and easier to paint than a softer kind that flaked. Does anyone have any experience with how easy (or hard) it would be to paint a ceiling applied in 1996?

We won't be in the home again until closing and are trying to make plans.

Thanks,
Pat

There were a couple of involved threads about removing the popcorn ceilings earlier this year or last year. You might want to try a search for popcorn ceilings. It would definitely be something you would want to do before you move in as it is a very messy job.

A lot depends on whether the original popcorn ceiling was ever painted. The popcorn is really just chunks of drywall compound. If unpainted, it removes quite easily. If painted over the material is "sealed in" and much more difficult to remove.

Painting over the popcorn is not hard. However future removal would be made more difficult. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I guess we will just have to wait until we can get into the house to decide what to do.

We are very lucky that our home in South Florida is looking like it is sold and will close Dec. 09. We will put our furniture from that house in storage until we can get the new one redecorated. Hopefully, it won't be too long. No remodeling, just floors and paint.

Len and Chris, we had the house on Gerardo under contract, but the buyer of our buyer's house did not get financing, so it all fell through. As it turned out, that was a good thing. There was a question about who was going to get the commission. So, we will "camp" in our home on Gerardo until we move into our new one and the put Gerardo back on the market.

Thanks again,

Pat
