Low Speed Vehicles and their Tax Breaks

There was a very interesting article in today's Daily Sun. It concerned those people who met all the necessary requirements to have their golf carts classified as LSV's. The gist of the article was that when these individuals had their golf carts classified as LSV's they were granted a hefty tax break of $5000. Many of these individuals have now grown weary of the cost for insurance, licenses etc and are now converting their LSV back to a golf cart classification. The writer was questioning the tax payers $5000 that was given to these people and if it should now be refunded to the agency that awarded it.

How do you legally change a LSV to a golf cart?

ureout 12-28-2012 07:05 AM

As of now a LSV cannot be changed to a golf cart, but Fla. is looking at changing that law and would allow it with proper changes to LSV thru a certified mechanic. There was an article in the Daily Sun about 2 weeks ago explaining this.

Are you kidding??? - the govenment probably doesn't even have record of the people that received this credit and if they did it would take them 10 years to write a program to recoup the money. Also they would have to do a study for millions of dollars to determine if was feasible so we the tax payers would once again take the hit.

sounds like sour grapes from those that didnt take advantage of the program!

At the time this tax break was issued, insurance was at a low cost for LSV's. Now the insurance is much higher about the same as insuring a regular auto and many people can't afford it. I'm glad they are making the option available to convert these back to those who have these carts as a few of my friends are stuck with LSV's they can no longer afford to insure.

hmmm,

...how about instead of being so concerned about a one-life-time tax advantage for a few hundred people, you direct your concerns to the MILLIONS of welfare recipients, millionaires, and thousands of doctors who are screwing the government (us) out of billions of dollars in medicare every day? Not one person who took advantage of this tax credit knew they were going to be able to revert back to using their cart as a non-LSV. Period. So direct your anger where it may prove productive.
Just sayin'

Why must I make a choice? Why can't I be concerned with everyone ripping me off?

gomoho 12-28-2012 11:40 AM

:agree: Well said.

You would think that if one bought an electric golf cart they would be doing as much for the environment as someone who upgraded to an LSV. Why treat the two groups differently? Why give them a credit in the first place. I assume most would buy a gold cart with or without the credit.

Of all the human emotions disgust is the only one that has to be learned; with that let me say it sounds like disgust from taxpayers who subsidized another program that amounted to a government give-a-way. In fact the dall was so badly thought out that General Motors bought 10,000 golf carts under this plan and then warehoused them amking a substantial profit.

Personally I reviewed the program with my tax attorney when it first came out and found that it would cost more in the long run due to vehicle registration and insurance. To be clear my main complaint is that taxpayers got hammered again. don't you just love re-distribution

One may easily question the value of this program, but in "theory" it was to save energy by providing an incentive to buy an energy efficient vehicle, which is what an LSV is. That being the case, if these are now converted from LSVs to golf carts, the end result from the government's perspective is the same - they will still be saving energy. Therefore, what would the rationale be to take away the tax credit when the vehicle is still doing exactly what it was intended to do - save energy?

Obviously, if LSVs save energy, then so do golf carts and it begs the question as to why buying a golf cart did not result in a tax credit. But that's a whole other discussion (who ever said the government makes logical tax laws?)
