Dog Population
 

I was just wondering what the dog population is here in TV. Back home I think there is only one family that has a dog on my street while here in TV I think 75% of the people on my street have dogs.

What do you think the ratio of home owners that own dogs. BTW I think TV should have their own amateur version of Westminster if they don't already have one.

It would be difficult to place a % on the number of households here owning a dog. However based on the visual outdoor activity it appeas to be quite high.

Dog ownership is obviously important to some folks given the heavy commitment for their care.

I am still puzzled by those dog owners thatwalk while they push their dog in a stroller

Guess there are several reasons for strollers. Some dogs are too old or may be disabled and cannot walk that far anymore but dogs still need to be out and about with owners. A lot of owners walk a fairly good distance for exercise and want to walk with their dogs, but for small dogs, the distance is too much or too fast. Larger dogs can generally take much longer distances plus they can go much faster too. If you notice most people who jog with their dogs have larger dogs.

One thing that most owners don't think about is hot pavement and walk their dogs in the middle of summer on hot pavement without booties. If the pavement is hot on your barefeet then your dog feels the same heat and can burn their pads just like your feet. Instead of booties, some people use the stroller to avoid burnt paws.

So there are all sorts of reasons for strollers for dogs.

I hear you regarding the dog strollers. We are out of the "pet business" but had a dog for a number of years when I traveled a lot but never saw a dog stroller until we moved to TV. With all due respect, if my dog could no longer walk, would have to think seriously it might be time to put him/her down.

I don't know where "back home" was for you but one dog on a street how long? More families than not had a dog or two "back home" for us.

I think they just can't take the empty nest syndrome. The kids are gone. The couple find they don't have that much in common so the pets are used to fill the void. This may be a good solution. The shrinks say the divorce rate is fairly high for new empty nesters.

Observations:

Dogs must be walked, thus are usually more visible.

Cats do not need to be walked, thus are usually "invisible."

Therefore, neither I nor My Cat notice dogs, even though several neighbors have them!

My bottom lines are:

** Cat owners don't pay attention nor care about the dog population!
** Dog owners don't want to know about cat owners, nor do they care!

Why not live and let live. I just watched a video where a dog stayed on his owner's grave day and night. Another dog would go to the church where his owner would go daily; they respect the animal's love and devotion and allow him to grieve. My point is if my dog was not able to walk but still enjoyed his life I would walk him in a stroller or carry him in the fresh air. I've experienced unconditional love from my dogs and so I strive to give back that love in any way I can. It's been proven that having a pet is a huge stress reliever and we now know that stress is a precursor to disease.

As to how many dogs in TV, my answer is there's not enough.

I think you would probably be suprised to know most folks have had dogs all their lives 'cause they love them and what they bring to the family. Sure there are some that are tying to fill an empty spot, but bless their hearts for reaching out and saving one of God's creatures.:doggie:

I am not owned by a dog of our own. I very much like dogs. They are so dear and perky and warm hearted and it gives me a lot of pleasure to see the dogs belonging to our neighbors trotting down the street taking their owners for a walk. I can only see it as a good thing.

I have decided that I like people best who like dogs and cats.

We have three cats and we all three spend a lot of time keeping our home clean because of them, but they are silly and affectionate and such good company and worth the extra work, although they really like Helene best.

In our small village of 53 homes I would guess that about a quarter of the homes have pets.

Huh. A Couple of things here. When our first golden retriever got old, we would take him in the car to places to enjoy outside if it was too far to walk (the dog beach, for instance). If we could have fit an 85-lb dog in a stroller, we would have continued to take him on walks, as that was his absolute favorite thing to do, to the point that all I had to do was bring out my walking shoes, and he was right there in my face, tail wagging. Bless his pea-pickin' l'il heart, the last thing he did before he suddenly died was go for a tiny walk with my husband. I still miss him. (The dog, not my husband. Well... that didn't come out right.) Anyway, I think it's fine to have a stroller for your dog for whatever reason.

As for cats and dogs, I looooooooove both. I can't wait to meet Gracie's "two" cats and get my cat fix in Feb. Our seventh cat died 5 years ago. I love encountering dogs on our walks and seeing cats on lanais. Animals brig me joy.

I think we have the only dog on our street, Newburn Ln. in tamarind Grove. Our neighbor has a cat. I don't now about the rest of the street. An intersecting street (Grenadier) has at least four dogs.

Bring 'em on! The more, the merrier.

Oh, PS: We got the first golden when the second child left for college. That was 18 years ago, and we're still a happy couple. I don't buy that cr**p about getting a dog because you can't stand being alone with each other. We've always have pets, for 42 years, and we've always been best friends, too. So there.
