Another TV trivia quiz

OK, let me see if I can come up with a couple of questions:

1. Who starred in "Highway Patrol"?

2. On "Richard Diamond, Private Eye", you only saw the legs of David Janssen's secretary, Sam. Whose legs were they?

3. In Captain Midnight, what was his sidekick's name, and how did he spell his name?

4. Why did none of the Cartright brothers look anything like each other?

5. Why did Jack Webb's delivery sound so stiff on Dragnet?

6. What was Ozzie's job on Ozzie and Harriet?

7. In what city was "The Life and Times of Wyatt Earp" set? What was his job? What was wrong with saying he had that job?

8. Who was Quick Draw McGraw's sidekick?

9. What connection is there between the "Burns and Allen Show" and "The Flintstones?"

10. On the "Bob Cummings Show", what was his assistant's name? Who played her?

OK, finally can anyone explain the following things from "Gunsmoke" (fyi, I cannot)

A. Why did they have Matt Dillon be a US Marshall, when clearly his job was more Town Marshall. At the time, 1870, there were only 14 US Marshall's in the whole country.

B. Why did Matt always wear spurs. He was mostly in town, and even when riding his horse, never had the need for spurs?

C. Why did Matt never have any deputies...until near the end when Festus finally was promoted.

D. Why did Matt have tie down's on his holster, when he never tied them, including almost all the opening gun fight scenes?

E. In the Longbranch you almost always hear a piano playing, but in all the episodes I've seen, I've never seen one in there. Has anyone else?
And finally:

F. Did Matt and Kitty ever "get together?"

Early in my career I had the good fortune to interview Milburn Stone (Doc Adams) near the end of his life. (He grew up in the tiny town of Burrton, Kansas.) I asked him about why Matt and Kitty never seem to kiss, or really show any affection. He said it was a family show. (Apparently OK to kill an average of 3 people per show, but never kiss.) But, he said, "everyone knew what Matt and Kitty were doing up stairs." It was a great line. And I enjoyed talking with him greatly.

Very good quiz as I clearly don't have any answers except the first one.

I was hoping to get more people to play. Thought perhaps the new questions were lost in the other thread.

2. On "Richard Diamond, Private Eye", you only saw the legs of David Janssen's secretary, Sam. Whose legs were they?

Mary Tyler Moore

OldDave 01-22-2013 01:46 PM

Correct Jeff.

redwitch 01-22-2013 07:00 PM

1. Who starred in "Highway Patrol"? Broderick Crawford

2. On "Richard Diamond, Private Eye", you only saw the legs of David Janssen's secretary, Sam. Whose legs were they? Mary Tyler Moore

3. In Captain Midnight, what was his sidekick's name, and how did he spell his name? Ikky Mudd

4. Why did none of the Cartright brothers look anything like each other? Different mothers

5. Why did Jack Webb's delivery sound so stiff on Dragnet? Be danged if I know -- cotton in the mouth?

6. What was Ozzie's job on Ozzie and Harriet? band leader?

7. In what city was "The Life and Times of Wyatt Earp" set? What was his job? What was wrong with saying he had that job? Dodge City -- there was even a reference or two to the Longbranch (but not Marshall Dillon or Miss Kitty) believe he was a marshall (at least he was in real life), definitely a lawman ???

8. Who was Quick Draw McGraw's sidekick? Daws something

9. What connection is there between the "Burns and Allen Show" and "The Flintstones?" Nancy Culp (know she played on Burns & Allen but don't remember her role; voice of Betty Rubble)

10. On the "Bob Cummings Show", what was his assistant's name? Who played her? no clue

Shultzy was played by Ann B Davis on Love That Bob

DougB 01-22-2013 07:17 PM

Quick's sidekick was Baba Looie..
Daws Butler was the voice of Quick Draw

OldDave 01-22-2013 07:23 PM

Hi Redwitch, nice to hear from you. You did very well, on the first half. But here are the other 6 answers for anyone who is interested:

5. Why did Jack Webb's delivery sound so stiff on Dragnet? Be danged if I know -- cotton in the mouth?
Webb never bothered to learn his lines, and read them all off of cue cards. Now there is a dedicated actor

6. What was Ozzie's job on Ozzie and Harriet? band leader?
Trick question. To my knowledge, no one ever said that he worked...good thing, he was pretty laid back.

It was set in Wichita. While Wyatt Earp worked there as essentially a street policeman for about a year, he was never anything higher. It's really weird because there were many factual things that only someone from there would know. They've just stared running these and in one episdoe I watched, they got the name of the newspaper, publisher, doctor and other things correct.
Earp was never Marshal of Dodge either, but was a deputy there later.

8. Who was Quick Draw McGraw's sidekick? Daws something
Someone got this....Bobalouie. Daws Butler did all the voices. He was the Mel Blanc of Hanna Barbera

9. What connection is there between the "Burns and Allen Show" and "The Flintstones?" Nancy Culp (know she played on Burns & Allen but don't remember her role; voice of Betty Rubble)
Bea Benaderet. She played Blanche next door, and she was the voice of Betty Rubble. If you listen, they both have the same silly laugh. Later in life Cousin Pearl on Beverly Hillbillies. And Kate Bradley on Petticoat Junction.

10. On the "Bob Cummings Show", what was his assistant's name? Who played her? no clue
Schultzy, played by Ann B Davis...later Alice in the Brady Bunch.

redwitch 01-22-2013 10:01 PM

Sigh. Think I'll argue on Wyatt Earp. I distinctly remember the Longbranch reference. My brother was a big Gunsmoke fan. I had a semi-crush on Hugh O'Brien.

And I knew Bea Benaderet was Betty. Can't understand why I said Nancy Culp but I do wonder why I remember Nancy Culp so vividly from Burns & Allen. Never saw it first go-round but saw many episodes on public tv.

Do I get credit for remembering Daws' first name even if not correct? lol

So, why did Ozzie bother coming home every day? Why didn't he just stay home?

And don't knock Jack Webb. Did you know one episode of Dragnet was about giving guns to kids and an accidental killing and another about child prostitution. Pretty gutsy for that era. Also, he was a great jazz fan. And he never ever said, "Just the facts, ma'am."

BTW -- This was the toughest TV trivia I've seen. Good job and thank you.

OldDave 01-22-2013 10:32 PM

Thanks Red, glad you played.

I wasn't aware Webb never said that, but a quick looks says he got close with similar lines, but that actual line came from a spoof Stan Frieberg did.

Here is a link to a piece of genius with him on the Carson Show. If you haven't seen it, it is a gem. Carson cannot keep a straight face, but Webb does:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FNBuO6eDYc]Copper Clappers - YouTube[/ame]

As to Wyatt Earp, I did some research just now and find in the 5 year run of the show they apparently started in Dodge City, then went to Wichita and ended in Tombstone. I didn't remember that. Although I saw what I thought was the pilot when they started airing these recently and it was in Ellsworth Kansas, and he moved to Wichita during that episode. In real life it would have been Wichita first, then Dodge, then Tombstone.

So, you were just as right as I was. It also said that the Longbranch was mentioned once in the series while it was set in Dodge City. (That was a real saloon there, btw.) No mention of Matt Dillon, however. (Can't image why they would. He was fictional AND on CBS, while Wyatt was on ABC.) As I pointed out Matt could have used a local marshal since he was supposed to be a US Marshal and would never be enforcing local laws.

That was brilliant. Hope they caught Claude, the Cleveland kleptomaniac, who stole the clean copper clappers kept in the closet before Johnny clobbered him. Thank you.

And thank you for checking on Wyatt Earp. Glad to know I'm not entirely nuts.

Now will have to research Nancy Culp and see why she's stuck in my little mind. Guess it is a matter of six degrees of separation -- Bea played a cousin on The Beverly Hillbillies, which, of course, is where Ms. Kulp (whose name I've been misspelling) was the ever-so-famous Miss Hathaway.

OldDave 01-23-2013 08:34 AM

Talt, thanks. Please tell me what it is I don't know about inserting links.

Red, all I can find is that Nancy Kulp (and I thought is was Culp also) was a guest star twice on Jack Benny. Just once removed from Burns and Allen.

Gunsmoke redux:

What actor was originally picked to be Matt Dillion- (He managed to stay employed making movies).

What FSU great athlete became a star on Gunsmoke?

What is the name of James Arness famous brother?( Movie and TV Star)

Who was the radio voice of Gunsmoke?
