Is Winn Dixie running a scam

I am not sure exactly what is taking place here and am hoping enough replys will help me make up my mind. In todays paper, Winn Dixie has a large ad for buy one get one items. I am only 100% familiar for only two items and will use only those two items for my comments. The first item is Hellman's mayonnaise, buy1 get 1 free, SAVE $5.99. The second is Sun Drop 2 liter bottle, buy 1 get 1, SAVE $2.99. The two ads indicate that Winn Dixie normally charges $5.99 for a 30 oz. jar of Hellman's mayo. ASnd like wise the Sun Drop soda would normally be priced at $2.99. Can any of you regular Winn Dixie shoppers confirm the everyday normal prices of the two mentioned items are in fact $5.99 and $2.99 ???? That same mayo at WalMart is $3.48 and the soda is $1.25. Can it be that Winn Dixie is running a misleading ad and scamming their customers. On the other hand if those are the everyday prices, I apologize to Winn Dixie, but rest assured I will soon be in Winn Dixie to determine the everyday prices.

I'm fairly sure they are using suggested retails set by manufacturers as their comparison prices. Even if the Mayo is $3.50 at Walmart you still save that much.

The Mayo last time I bought it in Publix was $5.69 I believe. So their regular price of 5.99 checks.

No it isn't a scam, my uncle works for Roche Bros here in MA, it is what was presented at a recent conference for them, here in MA Shaw's is doing it all the time. I now buy quantities of what I would use and freeze some items, they are trying to compete with WalMart

The Winn Dixie ads are good but your trust but verify approach is wise

If you think 5.99 is a good deal for 2 jars, buy them. If you don't think so, then don't buy them.

Maybe these folks could answer your question about the scam..........

It's the same deal when Publix runs a buy one/get one on boneless chicken. All of a sudden it's like $5.28/lb so you end up paying what should be the regular price when you buy two, but it makes us all feel good.

I have found that the price for one BOGO item at Winn Dixie is cheaper at Wal Mart every day. When they run this for an item the BOGO price ends up being a little cheaper for two.
Example:
Frozen Pepperidge Farm cakes, Walmart one sells for 3.99
BOGO at Wonn Dixie would be 5.99..

I had the same question Warren and investigated.

No you are incorrect

Your math isn't exactly corect. If you buy two mayo at Winn Dixie for $5.99, that is basically $3.00 each, Your savings over WalMart is $0.48 times 2 for a total savings of slightly less than a dollar.

What bothers me is the claim by Winn Dixie that you would save $5.99.

Warren Kiefer 08-11-2013 07:58 PM

Not the Point

Your comment does not address the point of my post. The orginal posting simply asked if Winn Dixie was being honest when they advertised a shopper would save $5.99 if they purchased two jars of mayo.

I believe some people don't get it that they are being lied to. Not too long ago I noticed this pricing difference on baby back ribs. I regularly purchased the ribs for $3.49 a pound. Suddenly the same store advertised baby back ribs, buy 1 at $5.99 get 1 free. Save $5.99...... The actual saving in my opinion was truthfully only about a dollar, not $5.99....

Well, you would save that much if their normal price is $5.99 for one. I guess that is the question: what is their normal price. They are not saying their price is cheaper than Walmart.

Are you saying that in accordance with the Winn Dixie ad, you will actually be saving $5.99 ?????

Warren Kiefer 08-11-2013 08:18 PM

True But..

It was not my intention to compare the prices of the two stores. I will get my answer after the three day sale is over. If I find Winn Dixie is charging $5.99 for the mentioned mayo- case closed. If it is marked less than $5.99 then Winn Dixie is lying to their customers.

I might add that I would be shocked to find that Winn Dixie is charging $3.00 more for the same Mayo than what WalMart charges.
