Cane Garden

I am a fan of Cane Garden. Decent food and service, consistent and decent value. It is my go to place when nothing else fosters up a craving. So I went there tonight with a couple folks and had dinner. It was later then usual for dinner and we happen to have had an early lunch so was hungry. And I did the unthinkable and ordered dessert. I chose the Bourbon Street Pecan Pie with ice cream. They were out of vanilla ice cream. How is that possible? I can't imagine a restaurant running out of vanilla ice cream. And if you did, send someone out to buy two gallons. It doesn't have a short shelf life, any decent brand would be OK, and it is costing you business. If I owned that restaurant the manger would be fired on the spot. It is completely unacceptable to run out of an item that should be considered a staple.

I can promise you they will lose some % of my business. As I left I told everyone I saw, "order the vanilla ice cream" it is wonderful. Why do businesses make such simple easy to correct mistakes? Do they have so much business they don't care?

I wonder things like this so often. Went to a place once that was out of mustard!!!

So many restaurants now work with premade frozen entrees from big restaurant suppliers. They are heated and served. Salads made fresh but not much real cooking going on here in TV or probably anywhere. Thus we have low prices, but some kid could have been sent over to Sweet Bay and bought some ice cream.

I usually back up every staple in my pantry and have for years and if a group of friends walked in the front door unexpectedly, I could pretty much cobble up something half way decent and feed them pretty fast and fairly easily.

Times change.

We always have vanilla ice cream at our house Chris...and a cold icey drink ready for you two.

i can't understand why you would set people up for disappointment by telling them to order the vanilla ice cream.

the restaurant was out of it - why so hard to just get over it and move on? i can't understand that either.

sometimes bad things happen to good peple - no?

My husband and I ordered salad at the Olive Garden and when it was delivered we noticed there were no olives in it. My husband, who loves olives, asked if they had been forgotten. The waitor said, no we ran out of olives! Olive Garden running out of olives. You are kidding me!!!

Apparently the need to embarrass the management superseded saving the other customers from disappointment. A letter to the owner might do a better job.

Someone posted a while earlier on a Havana thread that it is not legal in Florida for an establishment to purchase items at a retail store for resale. I checked with my son who is an executive chef and he confirmed that.

Also they are at the mercy of their suppliers. Perhaps they ordered it and it wasn't delivered, or out of stock, or a problem with the manufacturer.

You learn something new here every day.

I would think that a phone call to another restaurant asking if they might have some to loan would have been helpful. It may be illegal in Florida to purchase from a local grocery but I do know for a fact that it has been done many times.

I'm sorry, I don't get it. A restaurant that you really like ran out of vanilla ice cream and they are now going to lose a % of your business ! :ohdear:
