It is a fabricated event designed to make money. The only golf tournaments I enjoy watching are individual events, like The Masters, The U.S. Open, etc.

The Ryder Cup started in 1927 and the Masters in 1934.

I don’t think the Ryder Cup or the Masters were originally designed to make money. As far as I can tell, the Ryder Cup was barely profitable for the first 50 years. And it is only in the last 30-40 years that it has become a huge source of revenue fueled largely by television rights, ticket sales, and sales of merchandise.

Here it is, from the horse's mouth.

200K?, 500K? What difference does it make---it's chump change to these guys
The top 12 PGA tour money leaders are all playing this week. Scottie--27.6M (down from 50+ last year), Young in 12th with 8.9M. Interestingly, Bradley was 13th. Didn't get #'s on the LIV players. That's just prize $$$, endorsements add a lot more.

What a revolting display by supposed grownups.

American fans don't seem to be able to distinguish between patriotic support and boorish behavior. Apparently anything goes in the name of patriotism and my "team". Reflective of society in general?

Just to be clear on this paying the players situation ...

The players are 100% right, to demand to get paid.

The Ryder Cup belongs to the PGA (NOT the PGA Tour). It is the prime revenue source for the PGA and their estimate earning from the Cup is over $200,000,000.

Where does that money go? Up until this year, ZERO dollars went to the PGA Tour Pros who are the attraction. ZERO.

Almost every dollar the PGA makes from the Ryder Cup, goes to support the PGA's infrastructure. The PGA is a Union, plain and simple. One might refer to them as a "bunch of crooks".

Tom Brady is getting paid $75M to play a game of Flag Football.

PGA Tour Professionals were getting paid ZERO for 2 weeks of preparation and 5 rounds of golf.

Does that put things into perspective?

I agree some fans are over the top brutish, but the one fan which told Rory who was buttoning up his top button " You don't need a button to choke Rory" was the best zing I've ever heard!!! Everybody around, including Rory, was laughing. And Rory unbuttoned!!! So funny.

I do hope that the USA fans are more respectful today. The Euro players simply outplayed USA. It would be good if the rowdy (swearing etc) fans tone it down. It's one thing to root for your side, but it has been brutal so far. Glad that the course mics do not pick up much of that...

Format question. If (when) the Euro wins their 14 points BEFORE all foursomes are done, do those matches remaining continue to play? I would think so, so fans see ALL the play...

Maybe they won't need the State Police today.

That was a classic.

Another was the guy wearing the Tee Shirt that said:

“England had a 13 Colony lead & blew that”.

If you’re going to raze someone, at least have the dignity to be clever.

The attached was just posted ... pretty good.

What an embarrassing time to be an American. From the terrible play, to the way the fans are treating the players, it's a **** show.

I'm playing golf in Ireland next month. I can't wait to see how I will be treated there. :ohdear:

Have you played there, before?

You'll likely be treated like you're the most important person they've seen that day.

Like anywhere else in the world, it will depend on what part of the country you're in and where you're from. The golf courses are less impressed with Americans, they see so many.

Don't leave the country, without traveling to Northern Ireland, to play Royal County Down.

Proper golf fans would know the importance of player-concentration and act accordingly so they could witness some good play.

This video was posted a couple of hours ago.

Someone threw a beer at Rory & his wife.
