Default Replace Carrier Edge Thermostat with a WIFI capable thermostat

I have a Carrier heat pump with an all electric air handler and backup heating coils. It uses the Carrier Edge Thermostat with an external Control Module, sending only 2 wires to the digital thermostat. There are 3 other wires not in use inside the wall coming from the control module. The air handler also has heating coils as a secondary heat source when it's too cold outside. My goal is to replace the thermostat with a wifi type, Honeywell, Nest or Ecobee model. How do I bypass the Control module when I did not see another circuit board with labeled terminals inside the air handler? I only removed the top panel on the handler where I saw a rats nest of pigtailed wires, could there be a circuit board with terminals within the bottom panel? See attached pics.

The Control module has red RC and white W/W1 (digital) wires going to the thermostat. In addition, green connected to G (fan), yellow connected to Y/Y2 (cooling), and blue connected to C (common?): these wires are behind the thermostat and not connected. See attached pics.

Missing are the heating wires to both the heat pump and heating elements.
Will I need more wires than the 5 that I currently have going to the thermostat?
I'm assuming that minimally I need Power, fan, cooling, heat, secondary heat (coils), and common, 6 wires total? More if I consider outside temp and humidity?

Any advise anyone can give me would be appreciated. I am not onsite and trying to plan this out from afar while I have the time.
