This is NOT an advertisement for a premium service…my wife’s passport was soon to expire and we’re planning an international trip later this year. She used the Department of State’s on-line passport renewal system. She met all the requirements like no name change, current passport was still valid, etc.

She submitted the package late in the afternoon on August 15th, which was a Friday. She received her new passport yesterday (August 23d). The Department claims that routine processing times range from four to six WEEKS.

In my experience, the expedited passport service is a waste of money. It does not guarantee expedited service.

Just to be completely transparent, we didn’t opt for the expedited service. The quick turnaround was just ROUTINE processing using the online application portal.
