Default Thinking Fast and Slow - Daniel Kahneman, 2013

The book came out well after we finished formal schooling. Kahneman got the "Nobel Prize in Economics" (in quotes because the Economics prize was not endowed by Alfred Nobel), for his work on irrational economics. Prior to his work, and that of others, economics was a mess analytically because it had poor predictive value. The theories did not match behavior, even the behavior of trained economists.

Thinking fast is useful for activities like stomping on the brakes to avoid an accident. Thinking slow is useful for solving more complex problems like passing intelligent laws.

Fast thinkers - Those who tend not to think analytically. Post gossip. Post the first solution that they can think of without considering "why, if it were that simple, is it not a problem already solved?".They often will come up with answers based on non-factual data, or even make up the data themselves! Why would they do this?

To be sure, everyone needs to have fast thinking abilities. You don't try to figure out how long it will take before the snake bites your leg. But if you see it before the strike begins, it is useful to use your slow thinking.

As to posts on TOTV... LOL. I predict that anyone who reads this probably won't be changing his or her behavior online. Fast thinking is likely to dominate on posts that are not asking how to solve a relatively well defined problem such as maintenance of vehicles, homes, etc.

That is a fantastic book with great insights into how we process information, rapidly or slowly, and then act.

You have goats and you have sheep. Both are necessary for a well run society.
