In no particular order.

First three Jason Bourne films.
Godfather 1&2
One flew over the Cuckoos Nest'
Cool hand Luke
Blazing Saddles
Shawshank Redemption
Dirty Harry
The Hill (Sean Connery)

Actually, most of Clint Eastwood films as actor or Director.

What’s messed up is that Shawshank Redemption was nominated for 7 Oscars and won zero. Funny how history has judged this film kindly. Thank you Academy voters. NOT

In 1970, when times were changing and counter culture films were be being released enmass, and just after "Easy Rider" was the first R Rated film to be shown in military theaters (my only available venue at the time) , I saw a film called "Joe" which starred Peter Boyle. It was the most disturbing film I had seen up to that point in my life. I, along with the rest of America, have since been completely desensitized to violence in film.

Boston1945 03-13-2024 03:21 PM

I was never a fan of Western movies until this one came out. And I did not see one mention here. This movie came out in 1968 and had a host of great stars. Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Jayson Robards, Claudia Cardinale and Jack Elam. It was the only movie Fonda played the bad guy. From the first ten minutes into the movie, you hated Fonda, It's an epic spaghetti western filmed by Sergio Leone. It's widely considered to be one of the greatest westerns of all time. You can still see this on TV.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (I think this is from the 1940's), Dirty Dancing, Jaws.

Blazing Saddles is a great one but don't think one could be made like it today. It is heavily censored when on television which make it even more funny.

I would add Casablanca, and Lawrence of Arabia in any order.

LeRoySmith 03-14-2024 09:58 AM

So many great movies on this list I'm going to be watching some oldies in the near future. Also a lot of movies I think are either over rated of just plain bad, that said I noticed no one mentioned:

Sling Blade (one of my favs and should be on this list somewhere)

and a few really bad ones
Caveman w/ Ringo Star, Shelly Long, Dennis Quaid, Barbara Bock, John Matuszak (zug zug Lana)
Rock Horror Picture Show

PugMom 03-14-2024 10:23 AM

Slingblade was a GREAT movie! thx for the reminder

LOVED My Cousin Vinny. It isn't often that an actor can appear in a movie completely out of character relating to the roles he or she usually plays and do as well as Joe Pesci did in that movie. Hilarious! Fred Gwynne as the judge, too.

Another movie along those lines was Leap Of Faith, with Steve Martin as the charlatan faith-healer Jonas Nightengale in the only serious role I've ever seen him in. A really excellent movie in all respects that never really got the recognition that in my mind it deserved, especially for the revelations of many of the ways such phonies "motivate" people to make donations. And with a really great (and unexpected) ending.

:a040: Lol! Some people seemed to think it was funny though.

Of course humor is so subjective. When friends and I saw "Brady Bunch" movie we thought it was hysterical but people were walking out. It was mostly younger people that couldn't relate to the "Bunch" genre of the '70's I guess. Stupid humor but relatable to those of us that grew up watching Brady Bunch.

Caddyshack

Casablanca

Princess Bride

The Wizard of Oz

The Pink Panther Strikes Again

Jeeves & Wooster

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

A Christmas Carol (the one with Alistair Sim, but many are good because the story is so good)

Cocoon

Harry Potter (1-8)

Agree the one with Alistair Sim is so good, but my personal fav is now the one with George C. Scott (Patton). As Scrooge, George Scott is just amazing (listen to some his "mutterings" to himself while various "spirits" are speaking to him ! Classic for sure.

On my "greatest" list is Dr. Zhivago, and NOT because it's a "love" story, but for the powerful message it gave at the time (probably would not be made in Hollywood now !). Also War and Peace, The Last Emperor, and Gandhi are on my list... obviously I favor big epic like films ! Pearl Harbor, Out of Africa, Passage to India... they "don't make um like that any more"....LOL !

No kidding!!! 1939 was a GREAT year for movies. The thirties in general were good, I think because of the hardships of the Great Depression, people need the escape that movies provided & 1939 was the pinacle.

Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Dark Victory, Wuthering Heights, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Three Musketeers & lots of others.

We could have a separate thread just about 1939 movies.

I've tried on several occasions to get my wife and kids to watch it, they think I'm nuts every time I try it.

The first one was fabulous, the first "follow up" was interesting, but nothing like the original based on the novel. Jaws was terrific, IMO, even though the mechanical shark (given it's '75 debut) looks so contrived these days. The Jaws follow ups, like the Rocky follow ups, never reached the quality of the originals, again, just my opinion.

LeRoySmith 03-14-2024 01:03 PM

How do you top Unforgiven, Gran Torino, Shawshank, Saving Ryan's Privates, Band of Brothers, We Were Soldiers, Forrest Gump, Sling Blade, The Gods Must Be Crazy, The Patriot, Braveheart, Taken, Borne x3, The Bucket List, The Hunt for Red October, Dances With Wolves, Open Range, too many to list.

It is very expensive to make Hollywood movies, so the companies rely on sequels to bring in cash. They don't need new ideas, frequently refuse to pay the original screen writer's asking salary, don't need much of an advertising budget as the original paved the way with audiences, simply put they are most often low quality cash cows.
