Re: ROCK MUSIC
I come from NY and lived in the West Village back in the late 60s and early 70s and I LOVE THE MUSIC in the squares and on the Village radio station.
The stuff in the last 20 years has not even appeared to be music, just a lot of screaming; poorly chosen clothes and loud music to drum out the horrible "singing". :dontknow: |
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Cheers to ABBA and the BEEGEES, But if you want to hear a lot of great oldies at their very best ....Bring Phil Dirt and the Dozers to the Villages for a great show.............

Re: ROCK MUSIC
I see there hasn't been a post on this thread in several weeks. The only reason I'm writing now is that it's raining, I had VSN 99 on to see how long it would last, and the music was from the 40's. Then it got me thinking. Everywhere I go and everything I do seems to have the same old, very old music; ie. the 50's.
Now, there is nothing wrong with that music, but to play 50 year old music day in and out, at water aerobics, in the squares, on the radio, etc., etc., is too much!! Even when this music was popular there was still other genres of music equally popular, and that never gets played. The entertainment people need to realize that a younger, hipper group is moving in and the music should begin to reflect that, at least occasionally. So, Kar Guy, you started this, what do you think? Is it time to start a Rock Music Club dedicated to getting more current rock music here? And that doesn't include ABBA & the BEEGEES!! Some thoughts people? |
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Maybe, this has something to do with the songs that were popular when these Villagers were in their teens and having their first dates, kisses, etc. If the average Villager is around 70 (born 1937), then that would mean that we would be hearing songs from around 1952 through 1962? The 50s pretty much? :dontknow:
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
When I was down for my lifestyle visit in August my thoughts were this is 50s radio. My memory says this is what was playing when my parents had the radio on when I was preteen. ;D

Younger maybe - hipper I question. ;D ;D

Re: ROCK MUSIC
In 1955 I was 10 years old. The music they play here, although I am certainly familiar with it, is the music of my brother's life, and he's 7 years older. I also agree as to why they play it, but the same old stuff where ever you go? Katie Bells, Lighthouse, the squares, it's the same all the time. I'm not suggesting getting rid of it, but how about expanding the offering a little into more hip and current stuff. I mean, what's wrong with some Tom Petty, Allman Bros, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, etc.?

Re: ROCK MUSIC
Well, I heard lots of 50's music when I was very young. Being the youngest of 8, I had older siblings who (thought they) were "hip" in the 50's. 8) While I do have memories of the music, I need the late 60's and 70's rock music to make me really happy.
Someone else mentioned Eric Clapton. I think I forgot to mention Eric when I first responded to a "rock music" thread. One memory, while in Montreal for a few days in the 70's (I frequently visited Montreal), I was in the lobby of our hotel, and Eric ran though. He sent one of his posse (roadie?) over to me and invited me to the show. Said I could watch the show from backstage. I was also invited to the after show party on "x" floor of our hotel. Well, I knew what I would likely be expected to do in exchange for these favors. I wasn't a groupie, and already had a date for the evening, so I didn't go to the concert or to the party. Sometimes I've kicked myself in the rump over that, but I knew it was the right decision at the time. My fav Clapton song is "Cocaine". (Note to big sister: just because I like the song, that doesn't mean I used cocaine.) ;D |
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Hey bestmickey, rock on, Cocaine was an awesome song, especially if you crank it up, lol!!
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
You young whippersnappers just don't appreciate good music. Am I that old?
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Well as I have mentioned before we are on the outside looking in, dreamin of 4 years from now. Hhopefully the radio station there will be playing sixties, seventies and eighties by then.
Actually we are going to see and listen to QUEEN Live tonight :hot: :hot: here in California. Could you even imagine what the hip hop and rapper age group will call an oldie oh gawd Larry & Bev |
Re: ROCK MUSIC
'bestmickey' - when we meet in one of the squares late 2008, for a cold one, I've already ordered up a set of Clapton.. 'Cocaine' will lead it off!
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Good move ripwho...looking forward to it!
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
You hear "Old Time Rock n Roll" a lot. How about some of the other great tunes that were hits for Bop Seger! Also some Stones tunes would be a nice change of pace.
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
WE HAVE BEEN DOWN FOR 6 WEEKS NOW AND STILL ALL I HEAR IS THE 50'S AND 60'S MUSIC. VERY LITTLE OF WHAT I CALL ROCK AND ROLL AND NO ROCK AT ALL. THE SAME SONGS ALL OVER AND OVER. MIX IT UP PEOPLE. GIVE US SOME GOOD ROCK. TAKE CARE KAR GUY
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Do remember the 60's? If you do, you weren't there man! I think it was Bob Dylan who recently said that everything written in the past 10 years is crap. Well.... not everything, but I agree somewhat. If I hear a tune, and there's no way that I can hum or whistle part of it a few minutes later, it's crap. It doesn't have a hook as they say. A friend of mine likes Godsmack; I can only listen to about 5 minutes of it and I want to puke. Give me Dion and the Bellmonts anyday.
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
A one and a two, everybody follow the bouncing ball and SING ALONG WITH MITCH...c ome on now I know youve watched the show.
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
I love WVLG!!!!!!!!! Please no NEW modern music. Most of it insults my hearing. For sure no rap. >:(
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
:agree: :agree: :agree: :agree: :agree: I think the station is great. Are we that old???
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Apparently!
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
I'm for anything but most RAP! I think as the new guard move in (people in their early 50's) the music will have to change. Not sure if you'll ever hear Nirvana and the like but at least mix in some current soft rock. A little smooth jazz or old time jazz wouldn't hurt either.
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
How 'bout some Stones, Rod Stewart, Gradfull Dead, CCR, Tina Turner...
Husband likes country - new artists... |
Re: ROCK MUSIC
...and Savoy Brown and Santana!
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Growing up in NYC I spent almost every weekend at the Fillmore East. I don't think there was anyone worth seeing that did not perform there. Imagine this show, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin headlining, all for the low price of a blacony seat for $3.50. Ahhh, those were the days.
Minnie |
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Someone say the Stones? Fred and Barny are friends of mine.
The best fix for RAP. . . WalMart 25 Best Irish Songs for $2 it will clear a 7-11 parking lot on low How about Funkenstein's UFO landing on the Square. Line dance to that Play some Hendrix get down tonight |
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Most music of the '60s, '70s & '80s some of the '90s to current. This includes Rock - Crosby, Stills & Nash, Frampton, Led Zeppelin etc., DISCO - Barry White, Chic, Abba etc., Dance music - Madonna, Lisa, Lisa and the Cult Jam, Tavares, Electronica, Trance & House Music, R & B, Jazz, Classical and yes I like Country, New Wave, Punk Rock, New Age, Big Band, Doo Wop, Soul, Reggae and some Hip Hop, not the violent talking, woman hating :barf: , profane :edit: ugly stuff :yikes: but the stuff with a cool beat as well.
I'd guess you'd say that I have eclectic taste in music LOL. |
Re: ROCK MUSIC
minnie, almost every weekend at the fillmore with that kind of entertainment, WOW, i'm jealous.

Re: ROCK MUSIC
Jazz and classical music can put me into a state of nirvanha. Rock -- oldies, psychedelia, some heavy metal, modern -- usually means I can't sit still and body parts have to bop. It makes me happy to hear it. Let me hear the right sound on the radio and I HAVE to blast it out (my poor neighbors here). And, yes, to me the right sound can be good rap and hip-hop. Today's artists are some of the most talented wordsmiths and poets I've ever heard. They put Dylan and Baez to shame with their messages. I may not always like the message I'm hearing but the words are impressive.
I was fortunate and grew up in several musical eras. My brother was 7 years older and insisted I listen to HIS music (the Mickey Mouse Club was a communist plot to take over the minds of American children -- it was on opposite American Bandstand). So, the 50s rock was very much a part of my culture. I was one of the lucky ones who was there (albeit accidently) at the beginning of the hippie movement -- the Monterey Pop Festival which featured Janis, Jim, the Who, Alvin & the Chipmunks, the guy who did Purple People Eater .... it was an eclectic day to put it mildly. If Janis or Jimi were playing somewhere in NoCal, I was there. So, I do love the psychedelic sounds. I basically helped raise the neighborhood kids before my daughter came into my life. They kept me up to date on heavy metal, hip-hop, etc. I discovered the fun in those genres, too. My father insisted that jazz and country be played in the house. Nothing like some Trane and then Patsy Cline to confuse a child. rofl Given a choice, I would love to hear more blues in the Squares. Give me a man who can play a good axe and I'm in hog heaven. Only music that truly hurts my ears and psyche is disco and techno pop. Both are the same sound over and over and over. Oh, did I mention that they are repetive? So, yes, it would be nice to hear different sounds. However, I'm content with most of what I hear (as long as it isn't SLOWWWWWW). I can always play what I like at home and in my car. |
Re: ROCK MUSIC
red, it's that Yenko spirit
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Big Band music, music of the 30's and 40's would be so nice to dance to in the squares.
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
I'll second that!
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
WOLFMAN JACK, BEACH BOYS , PLATTERS......THAT WAS ALL AFTER THE MUSIC DIED AND IT'LL LIVE FOREVER....
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Even though I agree with kar guy about geting some up to date music, I still like my motown songs. The 60s were for me and I like hearing those songs all the time. So my choice is motown first then lets rock with some current stuff. Thanks
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
Yeah  Nice to see there's another Motown fan! I grew up listening to Motown, since I lived near Detroit.
|
Re: ROCK MUSIC
I would love Big Band music in the Square! I'm not a Villager yet, but am planning on another preview trip in a couple of months. And I am also counting on being a Villager by Fall of 2008. Gotta sell a hosue first but I think that will happen in late spring or early summer. I am ever the optimist.
