During last Friday's torrential rain,I was going home on Morse traveling south in my cart. You couldn't see two feet in front of you and the thunder and lightning were all around.Naturally I had to proceed at a much slower rate than usual. There were many cars also going the same direction. The next thing I know a golf cart pulls out on Morse Boulevard to pass me.I thought to myself does this guy value his life so little that he just has to get where he's going in such a hurry?I was dumbstruck.I have seen this kind of compulsion to get where you are going quickly and damn the consequences far too often. It's been almost a week and I'm still irked.

Russ_Boston 08-24-2011 07:13 PM

Personally I think we do need to make sure that REAL cart speeders are stopped but 22 is too tight IMHO.

I love how everyone is being so polite to everyone all of a sudden - maybe it was me!

Golf carts are not stopped for speeding at 22 MPH in a 25 MPH zone, Russ. They are stopped because their cart is modified to exceed 20 MPH. Any cart capable of exceeding 20 MPH must be registered as a motor vehicle. Here is a good read on this subject http://www2.fiu.edu/~ehs/safety_poli...la_statute.htm

A (an?) LSV must not be capable of speeds exceeding 25 MPH and must be registered. A gas cart cannot be registered as a LSV as an LSV must be electric.

BTW, good to have you back.

JohnFromMaine 08-25-2011 09:16 AM

Fix the cart!

I've always heard that the police give you 10 MPH over the speed limit on the highways and have passed many a speed trap doing that and not been stopped (Knock on wood.). When in England a couple of years ago I was told that they give you 10% over the speed limit.

My cart can squeeze out 22 MPH on a flat (According to my Garmin.) and I think that 2 MPH is hardly a huge difference. As someone said earlier here, most can walk faster than that. The county issues a ticket for the cart being unregistered simply because it's a higher fine. Some politician decided that, I'm sure.

What they should do is ticket for speeding and require that the vehicle either be made street legal and registered or "unmodified" and have the vehicle owner show proof of compliance to the county within a specified time frame. All at the cart owner's expense, including the speeding fine.

buggyone 08-25-2011 09:42 AM

Bottom line is when you are on a public street or road in your golf cart - do not go faster than 20 mph. If you do not have a speedometer and want one installed, it is not a bad idea at all to do so.

Same thing goes for drinking a beer in your golf cart on a public road. It is against the law - do not do it.

That's County revenue raising 101. Still say they have much more important things to worry about. Who do you think gets some of the REGISTERED money? Not to mention the citation itself. Always, always, follow the money.

Yes, I know it's the law. But there are literally 100's of laws on the books that are not enforced to the letter. Most of these lightly enforced laws do not bring any cash into the county.

dillywho 08-25-2011 08:17 PM

Just a Thought

Seems better to raise revenue through tickets than to raise taxes. Works for me.

A new admin, yes.

In your opinion is the new admin doing something that is fostering a new attitude? If so I'd love to hear it. Or is he deleting some posts or something? If so then that's a good thing.

But just the fact that you say "Don't flatter yourself" is the reason I went away in the first place. Is that any way to address another poster? Isn't that what i meant last week when I said it is getting too personal? You just proved it once again.

I knew I shouldn't have let in and posted again. I'll just go back to lurking so I can gather info like in the past. But post again?

Russ, I think he was joking. He did say he missed your posts. Most posting here are just regular TVers, not wordsmiths. Sometimes the written word does not come out quite as intended. Hang around.

The new admin did post some intention to be tougher on trolls and disagreeable posters. I too miss your insights, but to be honest, it seems you are being a little oversensitive to the above post. that did not seem to me to rise to the level of insulting, given his statement that he missed your posts. jmho Ed

GeorgeT 08-26-2011 06:39 AM

Please, lets get back on subject.

I think more carts should be cited for overcroudedness than going 2-4 mph over the speed limit. Some carts I've seen look like the little car in the circus where 10 clowns will get out. Only we're not dealing with clowns (well maybe the driver) but mostly very small children.

Russ, you are right. I meant it to be funny but I guess it didn't come out right.

Thank you for the kind words. I guess I'll have to go back and read my posts again before I click on the "Submit Reply" button. I also had the toasting beer icon too.

My last word on the subject of being civil. The easiest way is to not call anyone out personally. Some jokes don't come out well in written form. If we stick to the subject then things are usually fine. As far as being too sensitive to the post you'd have to have walked in my shoes over the past 4 years on this board. I normally have a very thick skin and I'm one of the most patient people you would ever meet. But I had some PM's that were borderline theatening (remember, because of my openness most people can figure out where I live). I took these PM's very seriously. It's just not worth it.

But this is a good topic so let's not turn this into a 'Russ' drama production.

I'll hang around in a much more limited fashion than before.

Now back to golf cart speeding topic...

I'm getting a speedometer in my cart!!

PS> VG and I have spoken via PM and everything is well. I was too harsh.

mrsanborn 08-26-2011 09:11 AM

golf cart speed limits

Please explain to this novice how these carts are going over 20mph. From what I have read on the spec sheets from the different manufacturers, 15mph seems to be the max norm for gas carts and 19mph for the electrics. I am very curious because in about 4 weeks my next purchase will be a cart.

Just my thoughts on cart speedometers.... If you are stopped for going a little over the limit and have a speedometer installed, it'll be pretty hard to plead ignorance as in... "Sorry, I don't have a speedometer on this cart and I haven't modified anything ?????"

I use SPEEDVIEW on my Android phone to check speed once in a while... I have not modified my cart in any way, but I have hit 28mph, going downhill with the wind at my back. On the level, it runs at about 22mph. Then there's my electric cart that refuses to go more than 20mph via electronics.

Just another perspective on speedometers....

The governors can be adjusted. I have a speedometer on my cart and I really like it. It has an odometer too, which comes in handy to check my gas milage and it has a trip mode which I like, too.

faithfulfrank 08-26-2011 10:48 AM

This might seem obvious, but I have also checked my golfcart speed very easily using my GPS. It seems to be quite accurate.
This might be a solution for some who may not wish to go through the hassle/cost of installing a speedometer.

I like that one. I think I will take my GPS on the next few rides to see what I am actually doing.

Occasionally the Marion County police put a radar board up so you can check your speed. I have not seen one lately so a GPS test is the next best thing.

as others have also said, this an easy way to check your speed. I had a new motor installed a couple of years ago to improve my torque on hills, so I can maintain my 19mph uphill and believe me if someone is going 12 mph in front of me I will pass them. I don't see why, if I am going the legal limit, someone should be upset by that. Again, while for some reason, people like to 'rag' on cart drivers, during the same period, when the 13 citations were issued to carts 162 citations were issued to CARS

Those radar devices are usually pretty accurate except the one I drove past on Rolling Acres road about 6 weeks ago in my car doing 37 and it said 90.
