This type of thing is why The Villages no longer allows New Years Eve gatherings at either square. It use to be a great time had by all, but then you get a couple of idiots with club, guns and a fist added to the evening and poof there went out New Years Eve gatherings. What a shame. We also have a great deal of drug use here in The Villages, legal and not legal. So for those of you who think Spanish Springs Square and the new Brownswood Square are or will bring in the creeps from the outside, this happened at SL.

Is this "really" the reason the celebrations were cancelled ???? I have not heard a single word about this being the reason. I've not heard any reason.

Me thinks you might be adding a little drama to the mix...ie club, guns and a fist . . .

Happy golfing today....

This thread is truly sickening. Not the incident. It happened, we don't know why and it is over and we will probably never know the facts.

Some of you basically called the OP and one of our members a liar. It seems that whenever something doesn't fit into the scheme of images of TV, then the poster is lying. It was said it didn't happen because it wasn't reported in either the Sun or the Sentinel. It was implied that the OP made it up since it was second- or third-hand information. One member was basically called a liar because she said she witnessed the incident. (BTW -- I know salybow -- not only is she NOT a liar, she is a minister. I think someone owes her a very sincere and abject apology.)

The victim had head trauma injuries. He wasn't from TV; he was under 55. Rather than thinking he might actually not remember and have no clue why it happened, it is decided it had to be drugs and he was lying to cover up his own guilt. Hope you guys never serve on a jury. It really is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty and not just proven guilty on speculation.

Yes, there's a drug problem in outlying communities. There are also a lot of decent, hardworking people that live there. We don't know why the man was attacked. The odds of it being random are pretty slim, but road rage is a very good possibility, so is an argument at a restaurant or in the square, so is a debt being owed, so is .... Many scenarios are possible but we don't have the right to speculate.

As to the comment that, "In another thread regarding 'concealed weapon permits', there were several posters who indicated they always carried their pistols while in The Villages at night. What kind of chaotic damage would have been caused if one of those 'loose cannons' (no pun intended) had been there and started opening fire?" I am willing to bet that there were several people who were milling around who in fact were carrying. Most who carry are anything but loose cannons; they are very tightly controlled, especially when it comes to their weapons.

When did we become so suspicious and judgmental that we will accuse each other of lying? That we automatically assume the worst of another human when that human becomes a victim? Is it really that much easier to think the worst of someone on just pure speculation?

And when did you hear this? Been here 10 years and never heard (not even a rumor) of people with guns and clubs fighting at the square on New Years Eve.

fraurauch 10-11-2011 10:01 AM

The last time The Villages allowed New Year's Eve to be extended past 9:00 PM, we were there...until well after midnight. We never saw a fight, clubs, guns, anything but people enjoying themselves. There were a few words spoken over seating, but no fighting that we saw.

There are loose cannons around here but they aren't the gun owners.

Whoa...Red. You know I loves ya..but why don't we have the right to speculate? A bad thing happened. We don't like things like that to happen here where most of the residents are law abiding people. We love this place. It is OUR town!!

I think it might be drugs because most of the problems in the US where there is retaliation, shooting, shooting a persons family, is involved with drugs. Most of us who have lived long enough to live here and afford to live here, YES, that is what I said, because living in a retirement area requires financial planning, most of us aren't doing drugs because we couldn't afford both and This was a KID, in his forties. He wasn't providing information...which could be he was concussed and it could be...he ain't talkin'.

We aren't on a jury Red. This forum is just kinda talkin' about stuff. Guessing what happened etc.

And some people like to give their opinions. Like saying this is the reason New Years Eve was cancelled. Personally, I disagree. I read this forum every day and have never heard mention of that.

I don't know this person. It is quite possible he is a minister at the local church that looked a lot like someone who was foolin' around with someone's girlfriend. OR it could be someone who cut someone off trying to get here to dance.........Or it could be someone's son in law that was here visiting and attending a secret Drug Cartel meeting.

Who knows?

But Red, Don't you see that if this stuff continues, we are gonna have to get the girls together and straighten things out?

Hugs, Red.

Gracie, the minister is SalyBow. She stated she had witnessed the incident and was basically called a liar. That's just wrong.

At one point, it was implied the incident didn't happen because it wasn't reported in a local newspaper and that the original poster was making it up. Again, that's just wrong.

Yes, we speculate. It's human nature. But some of the comments were well beyond mere speculation. It was automatically assumed that the man didn't remember or know anything because he was on drugs, not because he'd been hit on the head with a pipe (that was my first thought on why he didn't know what was happening).

Maybe we should work more on getting facts and waiting before we condemn, judge or, yes, even speculate. There's something wrong when people call another a liar before all the facts are out. There's something sad about automatically assuming the worst about another human because something happened to them and they aren't one of "us." Isn't that how vigilantes work?

BlueHeronFan 10-11-2011 02:24 PM

Well the guy didn't remember a thing.

Yea right. There is more to this story and somebody knows who did it, and why.

Keep reading, it will show up.

There's only one way to get facts if anyone is that interested. Submit a FOIL (Freedom of Information Law) request to the local sheriff's office for a copy of the responding officer's written report. If anyone obtains the report, perhaps (s)he could scan it into their computer and post it on TOTV. I say "perhaps" because I don't know if that step (scanning/posting elsewhere) would be legal. But, if it is, maybe that could be a new "Thread". Anyone who obtains any written police report could then post it on TOTV for all to see. Those who want to live in a total bubble would not have to open that thread to see the happenings. If people are truly wanting to know about all the illegal or criminal activites that are occurring within The Villages, someone could submit FOIL requests to each local sheriff's office on a monthly basis, seeking copies of all incident reports for that month which were filed as a result of incidents which required police interaction within The Villages. And, if legal, and IF the TOTV editor allows them to be copied here, that someone could scan them and share with all. (As I've mentioned many times, I don't live in TV, so I wouldn't do this. I just wanted to share the idea with those who may be interested.) If TOTV won't allow it, or if it isn't legal to scan copies of the reports to share, perhaps folks would want to approach the Property Owner's Association and ask that as a service to the residents, they submit monthly FOIL requests to the local sheriff's offices and subsequently share synopsis of incidents in each newsletter (i.e., this month there were 3 incidents of spousal abuse in TV; 7 robberies (two in Village of XYZ, one in Village of ABC, and 4 in Village of FGH); 3 assaults occurred in Spanish Springs and one in Sumter Landing). (NOTE: this is just an example, NOT an actual report.)

If people really want this kind of information and if you don't believe your local (Daily Sun) newspaper provides you with the information you want, there are other ways to obtain it. It would just take a little work and a mechanism to be able to share the info with other residents.

Very well stated, Red.
