They will probably send you a check

Each county has their own procedures but I worked for a tax collector in another county for a long time. We automatically refunded any overpayment in excess of $10. It may take a while as this is the busiest week of the year, processing payments, fixing issues, etc. Going down to their office won't help except that once the payment is processed (which may take a little while), they can confirm there is an overpayment and when you might expect a check in the mail. To correct some misinformation given here - all the money stays in the country, none goes to the state. Also, all ad valorem taxes and most non ad valorem taxes are paid in arrears. What we pay in November 2020 is for Jan-Dec 2020. If you sell in December, you will get a very small amount prorated at closing and all prorations are generally done at the November amount, regardless of when you pay. Each title company may handle differently but bottom line is you get no credit for overpaying the taxes. Believe it or not some people overpay their property taxes, knowing they will get a refund just so they can cheat on their income taxes - claiming the higher amount paid as their deduction. Hope that helps.

That doesn't seem to track with the refund process in Florida. The refund form is Form DR-462, which is a Florida State Department of Revenue form. You submit the form to the county, but they send it to the state for processing. So, apparently, the State of Florida processes the refund, not the county.

Correct

Your over payment will be refunded in escrow when your taxes are prorated if you don't find satisfaction prior. It's not gone forever.

You are correct!

That may be the worst case, but I think I would apply for a refund using the prescribed form.

DR 462 is for payments made in error (like you paid the wrong account) not for an overpayment in the right account. The state has nothing to do with an over payment on the right account.

It's not true that Form DR-462 is only used for overpayment to an incorrect account. Here are the reasons listed on the Florida Department of Revenue website for filing Form DR-462:

• An approved exemption not applied to your bill
• Being billed for the wrong building or incorrect
square footage
• Being double assessed
• A miscalculated early payment discount
• A mathematical error
• Overpayment of property taxes
• Payment when no tax is due
• Payment of someone else’s taxes in error
• Payment for a tax certificate that is
subsequently corrected or amended

Been there, Done That.

I got a check in the mail about 6 weeks later. No fees. Just the amount overpaid.

Don't waste our time with this... you know what to do to get your money back. Continue to call until you get through. Or go to the office.

If you need a face-to-face conversation on your tax Overpayment, I would go to, for example, The tent set up at the Lake Sumter Sheriffs Dept. properties on 466 and discuss it with the ladies accepting tax payments.

Roron123 11-29-2020 09:33 AM

Once your check has cashed print proof from your bank, go to Tax office, complete necessary form required, and you will get a refund!

It’s embarrassing however I overpaid my property taxes that were due 11-30-2020. I paid the higher amount due March 2021.

Can anyone let me know if they’ve done this? How to get the overpayment back ? Please don’t tell me to carry credit balance forward as I intend to put my home up for sale in the next 2 months or so?

I’ve contacted the tax office all I get is a recording and no return phone call. It was the phone number of Randy Mast. Thank you

Most offices are closed until Monday for the extended holiday - our taxes in action.
