Accepting American culture

The Villages is a retirement community that hopefully embraces all aspects of American culture. Those that lived in the 70’s enjoyed Harley’s and muscle cars and may now finally be able to own their dream machine. Why would anyone want to cancel this amazing cultural time in our country and those machines that represent it?

Guys with no muffles don’t know when to shift gears so they rely on the sound and vibration of the engine about to explode…..

No comment on their pipes. Just welcome. Let’s see how they react. If they are receptive, with time you mention how noise is considered unwelcome, like lawn mowers gas engines etc. Let them get the hint. See how they react. It takes time to change behavior.

If it’s not worth your while, there are noise ordinances. I’m sure your other neighbors will join you in your complaint. If the person is a general ass, it’s not worth fighting, life is too short for such a neighbor, might consider a move.

Velvet, you worded it pretty good! This person didn’t say that Cowboy just sits in his garage & revs the motor. They probably start it & in a min. or 2 they’re gone. Remember TV is just another community like any other city!

Not a bad idea, actually. It would depend on the model that this person owns, but you can get slip-on (which means he could also slip them off) mufflers in the neighborhood of $200.00. Depending on just how loud this bike is and how many others in the neighborhood are as PO'ed as you are, it might mean that you are shelling out pocket change. Plus if you do that and he still does not quiet things down, it would be good ammunition of you and the others in your neighborhood decide to involve the authorities.

Still and all, though, it might be best just to live with it. Feuding with neighbors often ends up being a lose-lose proposition.

Have to say this was a good thread …..much better than the bear poop thread ……

After thinking about it, I decided to leave it alone and live with the quiet exhaust. None of my neighbors have complained and many have complimented me on the bike, but I'm not up at daybreak either!
I hear cars and trucks rumble down our street that are louder than my bike, not to mention lawnmowers.

I had a Fatboy for 15 years and have ridden motorcycles since I was 12. Mine was a bit loud too. But if you go easy on the throttle they aren't so bad. And you don't have to rev them up when you start them, they're fuel injected. And I wouldn't start it at the crack of dawn either. I've since sold my Harley due to it being so dangerous now. Too many distracted and aggressive drivers take the fun out of it..

We're looking to buy a snowbird home in TV soon. Only thing I ride now is my mountain bike and my motocross bike. And I won't be riding that anywhere near TV. lol. Riding motocross is still a passion of mine.

I believe the Villages to be proud Americans. Be proud of your neighbors American bike. Smile when you hear freedom ring.

As for the Honda riders please don’t tear into our American flag by saying it has metric parts. We know, we have both sets of wrenches.

You live in one of the greatest of motorcycle riding areas. Minutes to be in the country and bike events in Daytona and Leesburg twice a year. Lots of bike clubs and year round good weather. Plus no inspections. Two motorcycle repair schools in the state and other events in towns less than half day ride away. Motorcycles are part of the Florida lifestyle.

If you had any common sense you would know why they are loud
It's to get the attention of us old goats
So we don’t run them off the road
The drivers in the villages aren’t the best drivers
Most of the time they don’t know their even driving

Harleys come with mufflers, owners make them make that noise.

fdpaq0580 11-21-2021 11:55 AM

Yes they do.

When I was little, back in the Neolithic era, the boys (never saw girls do this) would put playing cards on the forks that would make a popping sound as the wheels turned. Little boys trying to make grown up noises, we thought. Kids showing off.
Now, when I see or hear a middle aged man trying to make as much noise as possible I think "arrested development", poor kid never grew up. Still trying to show off. Still saying,"hey everybody, look at me".

And NO I'm not jealous of these pretend cowboys of the road. Any reasonable person knows that anything that creates undue noise to satisfy someones ego is a person who could care less about others.

You claim the loud mufflers are a safety issue? Nah...jest get a bloody louder horn!!!

Yeh. Inconsiderate people **** me off.

We know EXACTLY how you feel… Our issue was the neighbor’s son…. He would go out at night & come in all hrs. of the night… Revving his bike…

Sorry. Disagree

Sorry to disagree with you, but in my 11 years here, and having lived in other areas of the country, I have to say I have seen much worse. And, lot of the crazy stuff you see here is not much different than other parts of Florida. The round abouts are still a mystery to a lot of folks, it seems. And those folks come in all ages.
As to the volume of the exhaust, purely show off. "Mine is bigger, I mean louder than yours". Any motorcycle can be made loud.

Walk the bike to the main corner? Have you ever tried to "walk a large bike" any significant distance? Plus, it only moves the sound to your neighbors.

I stand by my original suggestion to talk to the guy...

That’s true, our friends ride lighter sport bikes, but our BMW LT is around 800 lb. We’d be reluctant to walk it. And the corner from our place is two houses away.

We have been in the motorcycle community for almost 3 decades and we have always come across some inconsiderate individuals. Noise pollution is noise pollution. Would we allow air pollution? Water pollution? Just because some people like it.

It takes just one individual to lower the neighborhood, house values etc.

kkingston57 11-21-2021 12:30 PM

Agree that bikes, especially Harleys are noisier than most. Our neighbor has one and we can hear him leaving the neighborhood.

Do not know how old your house and its construction. We had a frame house in S. FLorida and installed impact resistant glass in it for hurricane protection. They lowered noise level significantly and were much better quality than windows here.

In S. Florida. these type of windows lowered our homeowners insurance premium and I do not know if this would apply here. This might be an option but is not cheap. These type of windows are 2-3X more expensive than regular windows.

Seriously doubt that there are any noise ordinances that would apply, unless he is going out of his way to "harass" you

fdpaq0580 11-21-2021 12:40 PM

I'm just guessing

I'm just guessing, but your BMW is probably pretty quiet. Probably not a window rattled. The insanely loud bikes are typically the big twin V (Harley, Indian, etc.). You know, the bad boy bikes.
