DNS servers are located around the world. The largest 20 are in the US. These are the most popular and busiest.

Consider a DNS server as an index of IP addresses that convert your Talk of The Villages Florida - The Online Community Forum request to an accessible IP address. Any index change must propagate throughout the DNS system, this might take some time. Looks like TOTV changed to a GODADDY hosting service at some time, which will change the indexes. If you happen to hit a DNS server along your path to the site with an outdated index you will get some of these connection errors.

If you are asking where are the settings for your DNS servers are, they are in the devices that you use. Your modem has one set by your internet service provider. This is used initially by devices that are hooked up to that modem. You can further change the individual device, iPad, PC, ... DNS servers by going to the network properties of that network device. Then after you are connected to your ISP you can set the preferred DNS servers for that particular device IP searches. Some Century Link users here have reported success by making DNS changes.

There is usually no need to change specific device DNS settings.

Thank you for explaining how name servers work and they are not local.

If I can't connect to TOTV there is nothing I can do, short of changing my default DNS server in my set up software for my modem. If I don't feel like doing that what's best is sit and wait.

Is that correct?
