You can call them subsidies, but I consider them to be compensation for many years of low pay and the physical abuse your body suffers in the military. Have you not seen the Wounded Warrior commercials on television and the horrible injuries they incurred? The "subsidies" veterans get are part of the cost for a their service to the country. Without these benefits do you really think anyone would go into the military for the pittance they pay?
In the military you are on call 24/7 and my normal work hours were 10 to 14 hours a day. In one unit, due to poor leadership at the unit commander's level, we worked 77 days straight, 10 to 14 hours a day. Most veterans EARNED everything they get.

It all has to do with profitability. You make electricity profitable you'll find better grids being built. You want more charging stations once the cash hits the table, they will start poppy up all over the place.
20 years ago you had a cable box under your TV with maybe 50 stations, once people realized there was money in it, the dame busted opened. It's like that with everything.
Today you go on the internet and ask how to boil water and you have 30 people with video podcasts, first telling you their life story and then instructing you step by step.
It's going to happen before you know it.

Has the commercial goes I want my father's Olds 88 got 8 miles to the gallon. I sold a Lincoln Town car same size but it actually got 22 miles to the gallon in the city which was incredible for me. I now drive a smaller car a Buick verano which gets the same 22 miles to the gallon around the city. Most people don't drive a heck of a lot in senior town so it really doesn't matter much and you're probably talking one or $200 a year difference in the higher price gases so I really don't care. If you do start looking for cars you can probably sell your car for more than you paid for it 5 years ago but of course buying a new car will be 5 or $10,000 more also because there are none available

I would consider a hybrid but I'm only able to buy used vehicles because I don't want a car payment. I'm concerned that the batteries in a used hybrid vehicle would go bad and they are expensive. We've got a Chevy HHR that averages 27 mpg and gets about 33 mpg hwy and a Saturn Aura that averages 30 mpg and gets about 34 mpg hwy

Wonder when owners of electric cars will get to pay highway taxes like the rest of us.

My brother-in-law has a 2008 Prius with over 280,000 miles and still gets over 45 mpg

You only need to consider the cost difference between the 20 MPG and the MPG you get on the new car.

I get 27 city and about 33 highway in this awesome VW Tiguan SUV.
Now as far as gas guzzlers go, check the used car lots for the huge Pick up trucks that are 10-15 years old and still sell for $30K+, nope resale is not hurting them.
Now, the electric cars are very interesting and I would guess that in the future they may be worthwhile.
First, if you buy a Tesla you need to have a proprietary 75 Amp service just for charging. Consider that most houses have a 100 Amp service for the whole house that is quite an additional draw.
Now consider all the houses on your street and the electric service draw or potential Amperage draw is increased by 75%.
Most communities have issues now, especially in the summer. OUR INFRASTRUCTURE WON’T HANDLE IT!
So who should pay for this dramatic grid boost of every power generation system, every transfer station, HV transmission lines, transformers and the lines to your house. Oh, you have to replace your breaker box and breakers too, because now you need 200 Amp service.
In California a few weeks ago the grid was in trouble, so they asked EV customers not to plug in for a few days!

They already passed federal legislation that included money to be used to research how to tax per miles driven. FACT!

For EVERYONE, not just EV drivers...

I don’t own a gas guzzler. I refuse to by an EV car.
1. Expensive
2. Cost to replace batteries
3. Range is ridiculous and not practical to long hauls
4. No green friendly to dispose of thousands of toxic batteries
5. Russia owns 90% of rare earth minerals used yo make batteries
6. Need fossil fuel to create electricity on scale needed to be practical
7. Infrastructure is not in place.

This is another fantasy by people in control that again is not practical. The market/technology will drive future development not the government.

Unlike the old days, there are very few cars that could be described as a gas guzzler. Had a Cadillac Sedan DeVille with 500 cubic inch V8 which got 8 miles a gallon. 1969 VW Bug got 20 MPG, with no AC and a manual tranny. Now have VW Passat (can seat 4 comfortably) with all of the creature comforts and it gets 34 MPG on the highway.

Most people have SUV's. Wifes fully loaded Acura MDX gets 23 MPG and can transport 4 adults and 2 very small children.

Do beleive that there will be increased demand for hybrids. Would not go with electric only, until there is proper infrastructure to re charge batteries.

You missed the 500 CI Cadillacs. Had one and it got 8 MPG and not even fun to drive(it was a hand me down from my wife,s deceased father) since it weighed over 5,000 pounds.

I’ve spent money on stupider things than gas.

I don't think electric vehicles are the complete answer yet for reliable transportation.
Until a "lifetime" battery is discovered that last 20-25 years, electrics are died in the water.
I wouldn't spend $50,000-$60,000 on a electric vehicle only after 5 - 8 years spend another $8,000 to replace the battery's

But then again, I'll bet people said the same thing about cars taking the place of horses.
