Rap is not our cup of tea. Classic Rock is what we like to listen to but do listen to Broadway show tunes as well as classical music when we can find it.

I was swimming at Miona the other night and the speakers were blasting Barry Manilow. I hate Barry Manilow. But it was one song.
I managed to get over it.

But he "Writes the songs that make the whole world sing"!

Oh, wait, he didn't write that song... Bruce Johnston (of the Beach Boys) wrote it... :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

And no, most of us would not throw up at it.

While Rap has been populars for some time, it's popularity is no where near as long as R&R's popularity...

To your initial point, I don't disagree with your assessment...

Just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean millions of others don't like it...

I'm not a fan of the genre, as a whole, but there are certainly some kick ass Rap songs... Just like there were some good Disco songs (wait, did I actually say that???)

I remember reading that one's musical taste is typically set by the time you're 15...

But, being a musician (albeit it, an amateur guitar player) for the last 50+ years, I've tried to keep up with changes in music thru the years....

I did miss the "Hair Metal" era (thankfully) of the 80's as I was doing my residency and raising kids with my wife...

That was actually a good song and one of the first "rap" type songs.
I'm thinking Hip Hop was what was heard which usually includes some rapping.

Rap was popular well before Blondie "appropriated" it... :icon_wink:

But yes, it was the first "mainstream" rap song, since mot of the others were relegated to "urban" stations...

Much of the music was stuff we couldn’t find on other stations. Over the years the music selection has steadily gone downhill, as more crap like Michael Jackson and Disco became part of the playlist. Despite that, we have remained loyal and continued to listen to the station. Today at approximately 1:44 PM that all changed. Something happened that I never expected from the Villages radio station, they played RAP. For us, that’s a game changer, it brought back bad memories of the Super Bowl halftime show. We refuse to listen to a station that broadcasts noise pollution instead of music. By by WVLG!

Was it 'Classical Rap'? I'd be OK with it if it was Classical Rap.

Just another subject for a grumpy old Villager to complain. Where does it end?

Fredman 04-23-2022 04:51 AM

Sorry you rap fans but, I don’t consider rap to be music.

It doesn't matter if you do or not. I'm not close enough to anybody who listens to it or creates it to know if they consider it "music".

Whatever it is, it's vastly popular. Lots of people like to listen to it. I'm not one of them, but the radio business isn't just about you and me, and a bunch of old people. Not even in TV.
The Villages is getting younger every day. And we aren't.

OronocoCharlie 04-23-2022 05:17 AM

Send the station manager a letter letting them know how you feel.

I'm so curious as to what RAP song you're talking about. Went to look for WVLG playlists online but they don't seem to have them. I'm not a fan of RAP in general, but I can think of one mainstream radio song I like which is Eminem's "One Shot". Good rhythm, danceable and no profanities or outrageous name calling. Red Hot Chili Peppers ventured into the genre too which I've appreciated.

But as a younger villager (57), I am looking forward to hearing more of 90s and 2000s music which I can relate to, even though I still appreciate the oldies. A good mix from all eras is my fave format.

Through your TV when at home just pick the genre you want through MC, Music Choice. Music Choice has a huge selection.
APP can be put on your phone too.

I once heard a comedian say that their music was a cross between country and rap and they called it CRAP. I like country music but rap IS crap.
