Not everyone has a golf cart. I can see why those people might deem the gates "useless"...

But it's a selfish point of view...

Gate passes for car.

This upgrade was also presented as a way to block cloned or duplicate cards. In spite off the fact this is technically unfeasible without replacing all cards.

"The benefits of proper management of the access control system will further enhance the overall management of gate card data, further prevent card duplication and provide more robust reporting capabilities. "

Gate Software Standardization and Piggyback Agreement for Gate Maintenance

"Part of the upgrade includes the updating of the reader boards, according to Assistant District Manager Brittany Wilson, who is overseeing the upgrade.

With the updating of the reader boards, gate cards that have been cloned or duplicate may no longer function, Wilson said.

Only active cards are going to properly open the gate,” Wilson said.

In addition, those who have paid vendors to install a version of the cards on mirrors or windows of their golf carts and automobiles may find themselves in the same non-functioning boat.

Can anyone explain why construction mode would not be a good solution for all the gates? Where the entry gates operate like the exit gates. No card needed.

I see that as a huge financial win, even after they wasted millions already. Stop the spend now and at least prevent wasting more money.

Please don't mention cameras, because they would still record every vehicle.
Please don't mention restricting access cards, because every vehicle can already get past the gates with the red button.
Cars would still stop at gates exactly like they do today using cards.

Since many of the "duplicated cards", which are commonly used by people not living in TV, are old cards, that were never returned, that is most likely what he was speaking about...

They want to disable those cards, thus disabling their clones, as well...

AFA his cloned cards that are clones of active residents still living in TV no longer working, he's mistaken...

Nice snide remark...

I did, in fact read all of the comments in this thread. Even the stupid ones...

I don't base my comments on "rumor control" which happens at most social events. But I'm glad that works for you...

I'd be interested to know how deactivated cards are a problem when there's a red button.

The Manager(s) clearly hoped the upgrade would block copied cards. That notion was even in the statement of work.

From the SOW, the primary objective for the supplier was to maintain, upgrade hardware/software and extend the life of the existing system.

I have no illusion the gates and cards will ever be eliminated. It's part of the charm if the Villages.

There's no "red button" on the gate up North, coming back from the shopping centers...

Also, the current system seems to have a limit on how may distinct card #s it can handle.

Ergo, removing old, cards that should have been deactivated would seem to be helpful.

It will also have an additional benefit of preventing the cloning of those same cards...

That clearly didn't happen...

One would think that they would have figured that out before moving ahead with the upgrade (if that was indeed a primary goal)...

. Never gonna happen (at least in my lifetime). Depends on what you call "long range". Wishful thinking. "long Range" is a function of the physical card reader and the reading system. HID (current system) is specifically rated only for short range (spec'd at UP TO 24 INCHES but in reality a bit further. Software alone won't do it. They have to change EVERY READER and ALL CARDS to new system that isn't from the last century. .

The District mentioned offering a long range, active RFID tag to residents at additional cost.

No idea if that is real or wishful thinking.

Yes, and that was the only thing that interested me about the entire discussion.
