Mileage: 43,480

OK, reasonable deal, so I dig deeper into the website:

Pay Cash - $22,921

Wow. $6,021 more. I understand taxes, registration, etc. But here's their breakdown:

Registration & Fees include $492.40 DMV fee , $999.00 documentation fee , $349.95 electronic filing fee and $2,863.00 Jenkins Value Package. Total $4704? That's not $6,021 for starters.

So I get the first three, although that documentation fee seems high. But the "Jenkins Value Package"? So I call, and I'm given the explanation of "Well, other dealers just call it mark up, but we give you something for it" Ok, like what?

"Floor mats, pinstriping, and a 130 point inspection" My response: "So you weren't inspecting your used cars before? You just took them on trade-in, and put them on the lot? I might as well buy from a private party and take my chances, at least I'll save money for the repairs". Mumble, Mumble. I say thank you and hang up.

Look, I get it. Cars are in short supply, so prices are elevated. No issue with that. What the market will bear, right?

But to advertise a price that is $4180 (value package plus the extra markup before taxes and fees) less that what you actually want to sell it for is dishonest. If your start price you want is $21,080, advertise it upfront that way. Then I can decide if I want to come out and look at it, with the knowledge that is what you want, and I'm probably going to have to pay that price if I want it.

Jenkins, the market will change at some point to more like what it was. But my memory won't change.

Here's the link to the vehicle in you want to confirm my numbers, for as long as the post is active.

Pre-Owned Buick Encore for sale in Leesburg

Hanging onto the old one a bit longer, and looking on TOTV for my next one from a private party.

In the 15 years that I have been in The Villages, I have never been able to buy a car from any of their dealerships. Some people says they are "Thieves".

Carvana plays no head games

Very happy with the vehicle Carvana dropped off in front of our house in Citrus Grove. "Dealer doc fees" ETC are truly offensive. Carvana does not have any.

Best used car buying experience I ever had was buying from OffLeaseOnly. Up front pricing no hidden fees. There is no negotiations and no pressure to buy. This was in West Palm Beach, I haven’t seen any OffLeaseOnly dealers since I moved to this area.

Car dealers have a reputation to keep intact - and most of them do a good job of it. Buying cars has always been a nightmare and continues to be so. I just expect to get ripped off whenever I go for a new car. You see many tv ads stating that this and that dealer treats you like family - it's all BS.

Yeah, I guess that is true for a lot of people.

However, for us and others, car buying is a very enjoyable experience. We often give good advice on car-buying to others, but it seems that most of you ignore our advice.

Document fees are totally outrageous!

$200 for shuffling papers is also absurd.

We leased a car from Jenkins in 2012 and paid a $600 document fee. We purchased that car at the end of the lease and Jenkins charged the same document fee! I was furious and was very vocal about my outrage. We LOVED the car - so they got away with it. I will, however, NEVER buy or lease from them again. In effect, they cut off their nose to spite their face!:bigbow:

Would be interesting to see their reaction to this thread but no way that they will see it.

Carvana I have with three cars from and they are exactly true and honest with the prices that you see online however their prices have gone up several thousand over the last two years. They are not a bargain but they are exactly true

They are also higher than average paying for your trade so in that scenario they are more competitive on price.

Interesting comments, some seem to think failing to display the real price is OK, other take exception. Me? I think both 17K or 23K prices are insane for a 9 year old buick.

The truth, they are professional at it you, most of us are forced into that match and are way out of our fight class.

Buying from a dealer is like swimming with the sharks and no safety net.

Similar to the housing prices in The Villages. Advertised price never includes the "hidden" bond attached to the property.

I haven't read all the posts in this thread, so pardon me if someone has already mentioned this, but the only way I deal with car dealers (whether new or used car) is on the OTD price. That's standard lingo for "Out The Door" price. In other words, that's how much I would write the check for with EVERYTHING included if I want to buy the car and drive it off the lot today.

That's the ONLY way to deal with them without getting hit with these unexpected fees. When I shop for a car and find one that I think I would be interested in owning, I'll ask them for their OTD price and a breakdown of how that price was arrived at to make sure they aren't leaving something out such as sales tax that I would have to pay later.

Of course, they aren't going to give you their best OTD price when you first ask, but at least you've established a starting point for negotiations. Then, it doesn't really matter to me WHICH item(s) they have to cut the price on to meet my offer. All that matters is the OTD price.

This eliminates all these hard feelings and misunderstandings about what is and what isn't included in the price they quoted you or the price in the ad.

Oh, and one other thing. If you don't get up and start to walk out the door at least 3 times during the negotiating process, then you didn't really get the BEST price.
