jet, I just quickly read your past posts and they all seem so reasonable and you seem like such a nice person. I don't own a dog either but I like them very much. And I think they bring something important to a lot of seniors. I am not worried about their germs or their biting me.

Oh jet, How can you not feel all good about a little furry like this?

OK as a past owner of several dogs we at one time had a very large 140 pound Belgian Shepherd. (Trained to serve and protect). My father-in-law would never come to our house as long as we have owned that dog. He finally admitted he was attacked by a German Shepherd and basically had life-threatening issues. Did he hate all dogs, yes that I respect . So as long as we had a dog in our house he never came to our house, and that was OK. I do understand why some people do not like dogs and I have no issues with that. No matter how we think our pets are cute and cuddly there will be somebody who has a great fear.

That is very sad and very awful and very understandable .. However, those who have a reasonable fear, probably know that not many people have that fear, and those people deserve happiness too. We bow too much to the problems and expectations of the FEW in this day and age. We must always be compassionate, but not lose our sense of reason and proportion.

Why do you think South of 466A is a dangerous area? If you never come to this area what justifies your statement? We have wonderful people living in beautiful villages down here. Janet

I guess people really cannot grasp the idea or interpretation that what we spend on pets is merely a symptom of the larger problem brought on by the “relativism, narcissism, [and] consumerism” of our culture. When we personify our pets, when we devote and expend our best energy and attention on their care and attention, at the expense of other people, then we have gone too far. It becomes narcissism — a form of self-love — only “a caricature of love” — that involves satisfying our own desire to love and think ourselves loved. I have been a healthcare provider and nurse practitioner for over 40 years and my motto is obviously one which few of you seem to share -- First, people. Then, pets. From an interview given by Pope Francis (before he became Pope)(linked here), an excerpt of which (at around the 3:00 mark) is transcribed here, he says:

One interesting fact about this paganism….. the amount spent on non-necessities worldwide. Let’s put aside spending on necessary things such as food and medicine. Of those things that are not necessities, or superfluous things, the greatest amount is spent on pets. The most unnecessary spending is made on pets. Pets are idolized. And there’s the idolatry to buy, to rent, to have a feeling to give as I want, where I want, without needing a response, isn’t that true? It’s all a caricature of love. And the second largest amount of money is spent on cosmetology. Cosmetics. I don’t remember exactly the amounts worldwide, but there are millions and millions spent on these two things. Meanwhile the Pope is talking about children who are dying of hunger in underdeveloped continents like Africa, Asia and America. First come pets. And then if there is something left we throw it to the children…..”

That may be true of some people, even a lot of people, but not all people. I find the comfort of a small animal for older folks a good thing. Again what we spend our money on is a matter of our personal values. I think you may be painting with too broad a brush on this.

There are many who carefully share their not much with their pets and many who spend a lot on their pets ...very much the way they did their children. But it is their money to spend and unless they stole it, we have no right to say what they do with it.

You must not have any pets so you just can't relate.
I'm sorry.

You post on a thread about the new dog park to lecture us about the evils of spending our hard-earned money on pets?
Seriously?
