We can't prevent the planet from dying. That's what planets do. They die. But we can make the planet as livable as possible, for as long as possible, while we are inhabiting it. Or at least try to contribute as little as possible to its inevitable self-destruction.

That would require taking drastic changes to control population, and that is unlikely to happen.
