Yes. Had our original thermostat replaced but used Munns as the existing wiring is not sufficient. Very pleased with the functionality of the Nest.

Yes. Very Easy. Does tell you current temp as well as set temp. Works well with our phone when we are away. LOVE it! Gives me a report on how we are doing with the temps, how efficient, etc. Communicates with Alexa. WONDErFUL! Have Nest doorbell, too! also great!

What smart sprinkler system ? Can you explain ? I see sprinklers running when it’s pouring rain

As long as I live, I'll NEVER allow a so called "smart" device control or provide security for my home. No Alexa, Siri or any similar type of technology for me, as it allows "big brother" to listen in.......whether or not you realize it. All these smart technologies are being hacked and you will end up with absolutely no privacy or security.

As one of our founding fathers once said .....He who gives up a little bit of freedom for security, deserves neither freedom nor security.

I'm low tech and old fashioned, and happy!

Smart sprinkler controllers coordinate with local weather stations. The use the forecast to predict what precipitation might occur, what has occured, what temperature it has been what the evaporation has been for your soil type, what the irrigation zone needs (plants or grass, what type of grass), how all of these factor into the slope of your lot.

They change the irrigation time based upon the calendar. It is not uncommon for my controller to make 40 or more changes on some months. Dumb controllers installed in new homes do not do this.

Mine is a Rachio controller, there are other brands as well but do not use as many factors to control irrigation.

It's possible, I guess, for the Russians to hack into my controller to water my lawn but I think it is more likely that meteor will hit my house.

It's the Nimbus 2000 model

I wonder if anybody has ever asked Alexa to start the car and get it warmed up really good but forgot the car was in the garage? Not Good!

Roron123 09-20-2020 11:52 AM

I winder what model Nest you had as I’ve had two in different homes for the last 20 years and on both can instantly see what the temp is in the house! I love it and can monitor from anywhere in the world

Car shuts off just under 5 minutes. I use Alexa to start my car winter and summer.

I am using a RACHIO 3 SMART IRRIGATION system. I have a weather station on my roof which is synced (monitored) by the "smart sprinkler" through Wundergound.com and when a specified amount of rain falls (or even when wind speed is so high the wind will blow the water away from the lawn) it skips watering. Smart Sprinkler Controllers & Natural Soil Treatments | Rachio

Both the sprinkler system and thermostat can all be controlled through Alexa or other similar apps but I prefer using their native apps..

Of course it can. If it couldn't see what the temp is in your house how could it act as a thermostat ? That goes without saying (wait! I said it! :) ). What NEST can't do for some silly reason according to Nest/Google is a FIXED HOLD on a chosen temperature until you want to end the hold or even indefinitely. You have to set it as multiple small programs. Nest's (now Google's) excuse for that is that it is a "smart" thermostat and why would you want it not to be smart! Evidently many people over the years want it to be dumb at certain times with the push of a button.

Yes. Very easy DIY upgrade. I’m a snowbird and really enjoy it. Let’s me know humidity level in house as well as eco mode. I install the white one (lower cost option). Love it.

I’m sure I’m missing out on a lot but I’ve had many homes including 5 here and, I guess I’m pretty dumb because all I do is turn the temperature to the temp I want the house to be , who knew I could install all kinds of things to make my life more complicated

. Not more complicated, less.

With at least one brand you "tether" it to your phone. You or you and your wife leave your home to go about your day and the temp changes as you leave the area, it starts cooling before you arrive. "Tethering" take three taps on your phone, one time for as long as you own it.

To you it is always the same temp, no changing needed but you save on utilities.

It's like the automatic transmission on your car, completely unnecessary and far more complex than a manual yet it is wildly popular.

LOL! So true. . . yes, a hacker can change thermostats, can work to get into cameras, etc, but unless they have specific targets with high value to steal, and high value is the key, it isn't worth it, likewise many cloud software companies have a security system to watch for hackers, which is more and more common to have internal security services. . .

To that end, HACK is a great ETF of security stocks, which will be in demand now for evah!
