I am Glad not one was seriously hurt. Hope they escort all out staff out to their cars for security in case a return incident is planned.

Figmo- Does Florida allow one to carry Mace? Or a strong pepper spray?

I apologize Car...I did say..."Why in the world would someone attempt to rob a nurse, they only usually carry lunch money". I did say that.

I ain't right.

I also don't think it is necessary to squelch a rumor--sometimes getting information out to the public can be important. I think that it was evident in my initial post that I was asking anybody on TOTV if they could confirm this "rumor." I was not stating it as fact, just something that I had heard and it disturbed me.

1. I don't know where you thought I was bashing the Sun. I have maintained all along that the Sun is very good at what they do, but that we shouldn't expect any type of in-depth investigative journalism.

I am not one of those conspiracy theorists. The developers own the paper and they have a right to print what they want. It is their paper. Would I like to see better reporting? Of course, but I don't expect it. I think we are on the same page here.

Gracie, I know that the Sun reported the jewel heists, and that they run the "Police Blotter" once a week (I think on Mondays). I also think that a robbery with a gun is scarier (at least to me) than a burglary. Obviously they are both horrible, but violent crime is more disturbing to the public and probably considered worse publicity for residents and potential residents. It SHOULD be reported. Hopefully it will be.

2. Bombero, you are playing a semantic game here and using a rhetorical device often employed by disreputable politicians. You wrote:

"If you wanted to know if it happened you could call Sumter Co.

But.... if you just wanted to bash The Daily Sun and start a nasty rumor
about the community we live in than don't call."

Lets examine why I took offense to this. You are using a logical fallacy which essentially limits the number of possibilities out there.

For example, you wrote "If you wanted to know if it happened you could call Sumter Co." Certainly true, but did you ever consider that I could also go on TOTV and ask if anybody could confirm this event? That is exactly what I did. That is one possibility that you overlooked. Another is that I could get confirmation from another source...which I also did.

You also used the classic "But," essentially saying that if I don't call the police, than I am either A) Bashing the Sun or B) Starting a nasty rumor about our community. It is an "If-than" statement, logically (and linguistically very powerful) saying if you this is done than this is what logically follows. Once again it severely limits the realm of logical possibilities out there. Do you believe it was possible that I was neither bashing the Sun nor intentionally starting a nasty rumor about our community? Truth be told, I was doing neither. I heard about a potentially troubling incident, I asked if anyone could verify it, and put the info out there so that others could be warned of a possible threat.

It seems as if you were questioning my motivations (bash the Sun, starting a nasty rumor) without giving me the courtesy of the benefit of the doubt. You didn't say anyone was lying, but rhetorically if you accuse someone of "starting a nasty rumor" it is implied.

3. As to your statement that "There is always potential danger out there. I hope you're not just learning that." A little obvious don't you think? "I hope you're just not learning that" is a little derogatory. The question is not: Is there danger out there? Obviously there is. The question should be, should people be warned about potential dangers of which they might not be aware.

Very nice comeback to some rather harsh and insensitive comments.

Here we go again bad vibes bad vibes...Come on Bombero WHERE did you even get a hint that what you are accusing is true? I don't see nor can I even read into it to get your claim he is "bashing the Sun"

Chill dude.... :boxing2:

I agree and I am tired of bad vibes. I am certainly willing to put the whole thing to rest.

Bombero and I just had a disagreement, as adults are likely to do. I had a concern about an issue and sought confirmation. Bombero thought that maybe I should have sought outside confirmation prior to posting on TOTV.

While I felt he came across as a little harsh and I took offense, I respect his desire to prevent needlessy smearing the local paper and to prevent nasty rumors about our wonderful community.

villages07 12-30-2011 07:12 AM

Nothing in today's paper.

Cappy ... thanks for starting this thread. It's important to be aware of what's going on in our hometown...the good and the bad.

I also applaud the classy way you handled some of the disagreeable replies. There is a better view from the high road.

Figmo Bohica 12-30-2011 07:46 AM

CarGuy, Florida's CWL (concealed weapons license) not CCW (concealed carry weapon) allows you to carry mace, tazer and other non-lethal items as well as firearms. You can find the complete statue if you google Florida Concealed Carry laws. Way to long to state all that you can and can not carry or do on this thread.

Now as for the Daily Sun. I like the newspaper, it gives the schedules for the Rec Centers and other happenings in TV. If I want other news, good or bad about the surrounding area there are other newspapers I can read. Hope that clears that up for Bombero or whatever that handle was.

Just curious, does any radio station carry local news? Did anybody call the Sheriff's Office for info?

I really, really, really, really like you. I feel the need to hug you, your wife and all of your pets. You are a decent, fair KIND person. :spoken:

My new years resolution is to try not to quell rumors, defend anyone, and work harder on being funny.

I am very big on being hugged. I have issues.

I did not call the sheriff's office, but my wife received confirmation from her supervisor at work. Hospital employees also received an email yesterday confirming the incident happened on December 28th, that a gun was involved, and that if employees feel unsafe walking to their cars at night they can request to be escorted by a guard.

Thanks for the heads up. I think if I were a resident I'd be calling the Sheriff's Office and raising 7 kinds of hell about this incident.

Do not understand why so many are upset? The Newspaper,The Police. Who is to blame. You have to understand crime happens everyday even at the villages.Maybe its my background, I am always on alert. Still watch one village resident down on LSS,every time I am there. One person of special interest.
